I was on a long-established newsgroup called "alt.fan.cecil-adams" which was super-strict about what discussion topics were ok and which ones weren't. Imagine a mix of GQ and The Pit...it was really strange, but had a solid culture. When AOL died, Opal popped into alt.fan.cecil-adams and ANNOUNCED that the entirety of the AOLies were coming over to the newsgroup en masse, and she'd be making a few changes, thanqueveddymuch. For example, despite the newsgroup charter (or whatever they were called) expressly forbidding general friendly chat, she said that the AOLies would be starting a bunch of "chatty" type threads but hey! they'd all be labeled "MPSIMS" so we couldn't possibly mind, amirite?" The only other name I remember from Opal's little invasion force was Tomndebb....there were maybe a half-dozen 'invaders'.

She got flamed into oblivion and allegedly she was hacked/spammed/etc by the folks in the newsgroup who were also serious techies (allegedly there was a big overlap). She then went through the (then arduous) process of creating a NEW newsgroup (talk.fan.straightdope...that's not right now that I look at it, but something like that) that got maaaaaybe 1000 posts before it evaporated once the SDMB opened up.

Um, Boxing ensued, mainly because his posts boiled down to Second Stonish "if I'm obnoxious enough people will pay attention to me!" Which can be amusing if aptly used but this was just more of the same-old-same-old.

And I don't even care any more if people use The Pit. I've given up. Be that way.

The problem with Tomndebb isn't his TWEET!, it's the fact that he, more than any other mod, abuses his mod-status. He's notorious for debating with someone (apparently as a poster) and then suddenly becoming a mod when someone scores a point. He doesn't do it every time, but he does it. (Colibri does it too. There's one thread where I point blank asked Colibri if he was asking me some question about my posting as a mod or a poster and he refused to answer.)
