And in my dad's case, when he was little, he had to share a room with FOUR sisters, until finally my grandparents were able to finish off their attic, and then he got the downstairs bedroom to himself, and my aunts moved upstairs. And my grandparents were certainly pretty poor. Granted, I don't know how old Broomstick is, and my parents never lived on food stamps (I don't even think they existed then), but big families in small houses were indeed a thing. However, the whole front room/fancy living room thing didn't have anything to do with wealth. According to my mother, HER grandmother was really fussy and yelled at my aunt one time for daring to come in the living room. And they were poor as shit too. THAT BEING SAID, neither of my parents ever played the "woe is me, I was sooo poor growing up" card. Except when they wanted to guilt trip me or my sister when we were kids, like every other parent in the universe. |

Meanwhile, I have a friend whose family made a fortune in an unremarkable object used by every business in the country and she owns a mill that makes upholstery fabric. She NEVER talks about money. Same with a friend of my sister's. He's a self-starter who earned multiple doctorates and worked his ass off until he could start is own geotech company. His shining moment came in the infield at a NASCAR race where he kept going up to people saying, "I'm from South Africa. Can I have a beer?" No one could say no to that, so he wound up so shitfaced he started marching around singing war chants in Swahili, while a bunch of shitfaced rednecks marched around behind him going "OOOH! AH!" On the way home he was hanging out the sunroof of my sister's car yelling his head off, and when we got to her house he threw up in her bushes. It was epic. |

![]() ![]() The base of the routine is far older than this though. There was a saying that might not have been true, "Most Millionaires shop at Sears." All it was trying to say is most rich people want good quality for good prices and don't need to show off with excess spending. It seems like those days are gone anyway. |

Turdy would make a great mod. He could serve an apprenticeship under What Exit, and in a few short months, he'd be the bestest mod evar! You hear me Ed, do something right for a change and make Turdy a mod.

It’s stuff like this that drives me bonkers. Of course WhatExit wasn’t threatening retribution, he was explaining that he would have taken a different course if action had he known more of the history.
But BigT sees threats and personal attacks in common turns of a phrase and bizarre interpretations in the worst possible way. Quote:

Northern Piper, who has been irritating me more than usual lately, has never heard the term "gaslighting" before. When its movie origin is explained to him, he sniffily dismisses that as "obscure."

I asked him why he thought I hate him and he replied, "I drink? Long-necks." I wonder if he was trying to be clever and referring to this MB.

I don't snark very often, but "Gee I don't know what a browser is" is veryveryclose to "Please return your computer to the box in which it came and mail it back to the manufacturer with a note stating 'I am too stoopid to use a computer'."

That reminds me of a game I played a few years ago, one of the ones where you had to guess the real phrase versus the fake ones other people submitted, and my brother started to read "Complete this Jamaican saying: 'When a man has plenty, he _____'" and burst out laughing when he read the answer, so we knew the answer had to be humorous. It was "When a man has plenty, he boils the pot", and the combination of "pot" and "Jamaicans" is what was humorous to him.
Now, of course "pot" means a cooking device there, but what the heck does "he boils the pot" mean anyway? I wonder if the editors of the game just snuck it in there as a copyright trap because the Googles do nothing for me. Does it mean "he lives large", i.e. ostentatiously throwing around a lot of money? ETA: a better Google found that it is also found in one book of sayings with still no further explanation, so maybe that book had it as a copyright trap ![]() |

I'm guessing "boils the pot" means that he keeps the pot on the fire long after the contents are gone, eventually ruining the pot. Because he has so much, he doesn't give a shit about the pot, because he can just buy another one.

Banksy graffitis a private house, causing the value of said house to rise tenfold. Derpers fall all over themselves haughtily insisting if he defaced their house THEY would paint right over that because it's stupid and wrong. Fuckin' idiots.

But as far as talent goes, that is often in the eye of the beholder. You can explain to me how artists like Rothko are talented and I will still believe there is no real talent involved. Banksy is talented but of course thousands of undiscovered artists are probably just as talented. He; unlike most; has figured out how to market himself while still alive. That is his greatest achievement. |
