Where were you on 9/7?

Share your stories here of where you were on 9/7 when the Dope banned everyone.

I'd called in sick that day because I wasn't feeling well. I was watching Glengarry Glen Ross on my iPad but just after the depressing scene where Kevin Spacey (total douche in that movie) tries to gouge Jack Lemon's pathetic character I decided to take a break. After checking FB I decided to drop by the Raffer board and saw a thread about being banned.... at first I didn't realize I was affected but when I went to the SDMB I saw that I was. It was like watching a movie. I was stunned and flabbergasted.

Where were you?

I was trying to catch up on my Mafia game while on a (very boring) conference call. So overall, just another typical day at work. And then, I click on "new posts" and out of nowhere, I see this rude message that my IP has been BANNED!! I was shocked! Me? Banned? I never do anything wrong. Only the dregs of society get banned. I'm a good person, I swear. I crawled into a corner and started crying. I've only recently been able to look at my computer again. I don't know how I'm going to go on, though. With every tab I open, I fear those horrible, horrible words again: YOU HAVE BEEN BANNED!!!

Oh.

It looks like someone put in a banmask of FFFFFFFF, or the command line banip *.*.*.*

I know we can't blame Fenris for this one. Can we blame Marley for testing out the 1337 admin powers? :scitard:

I came back from a meeting to find Squink banned, so I knew something strange was up, since no one would ever figure out she's a sock.

Not sure when the actually banning went into effect, so I can't be too specific. Normally I would have logged on sometime between 7 and 9 am (EDT) to check on the threads I follow for their amusement value, and see if there's anything interesting going on in Cafe Society, but today I didn't have time before I had to make my morning shopping run. So I didn't check in until after 10:30; when I saw the IP ban notice I assumed it was a glitch but did the "e-mail an admin" thing just in case.

I ran across a news thread about it. People kept reporting in that they were trapped inside trying to read a thread or post a reply, and then everything went black. While I was reading the second forum was hit, and everyone was banned. There was stunned silence, hundreds of people standing around with nothing else to do for the entire morning.

I had just gotten home from taking my kids to school and dropping my wife off at work. I had put gas in the van too. It's a Dodge Grand Caravan (grey). I fixed some breakfast for my toddler (some sliced apples and a frozen waffle), put her in front of some cartoons and fired up the laptop to go to the Dope. That's when I saw it. The message saying I had been banned. I was stunned. I couldn't fathom what I might have posted last night that would have gotten me bounced. I immediately came to Giraffe to whine and complain and to ask somebody to tell me what I had posted that finally got me the sentence of True Death.

That's when I saw it wasn't just me, but tens, maybe even twenties of other Dopers as well. The numbers might even reach the hundreds. I was speechless. I felt cold...afraid...changed. I knew everything would be different now.

At first I was like "haha bunch of stupids always getting banned". Then I went over to the sdmb to see if there were any notices only to find out I WAS BANNED TOO! I knew this was a much bigger deal than I previously thought.

My next thought was to worry about all my friends over at the sdmb- guys like Dio. What if he didn't actually get banned but it was some sort of stupid technical error? I shuddered to think.

I had just finished a bowl of cranberry almond crunch cereal, watching the mothermind CBC when I spotted Squink's alert.

I dashed in, consequences be damned, to see the growing horror before my eyes. True to form, I froze in place as the adrenaline rushed through me. The wave subsided in what seemed like forever but was really mere seconds, snapping me back to reality. I've been refreshing the thread ever since, in awe of the sheer magnitude of this disaster, vainly hoping to somehow absorb everyone's pain.

I hear reports that some people were jumping out of Windows and trying to log on with Macs. I can't even imagine what kind of hassle that would be.

I normally go online before my first class but today I woke up too late and had to rush. So I get back around 11 and try to go on and I see that I have been banned. So I wonder what it is I did that finally made them decide to ban me. Then I IM my doper friend and find out that it isn't just me. I am relieved. My life would be terribly lonely without internet forums.

The Internet was practically standing still. Then they dropped Dopers out of the login sequence, and they were taken hold of down on the field by a number of men. It was just starting to rain again. The servers were just holding it enough to keep it from... it's burst into flames! It's burst into flames and it's crashing! Watch it; watch it! Get out of the way. It's on fire and it's crashing! It's crashing terrible! And all the folks agree that this is terrible; this is the one of the worst catastrophes in the world. Oh, the humanity!

I've heard intelligence that Fenris has connections with Ed Zotti, and that we have satellite evidence showing he is engaged in creating other long range hacking plans that could result in even worse damage. I don't want to panic anyone, but we have a reliable source (code name "Knuckleball") who says that Fenris has a large scale plot to block (it curdles my blood to say this) tube porn sites for millions across the world. This can't be allowed to happen. We need to do something before we're all seeing red x's on flashplayers everywhere.

I just went to visit Ground Zero. I hadn't been there in 7 or 8 minutes, and the Dope has been rebuilt, exactly as it was! it's a miracle!

Yeah, well the sad thing is that as soon as I saw that I was banned I knew it had to be a glitch. I don't have enough personality to get banned anywhere! I'm way too lame and innocuous! I rarely even post there and when I do, I usually end up being called an entitled narcissistic retard (I thought that would help me fit in! )

So, I immediately came over here to find out what was up and the 'raffers did not disappoint me!

It's not the same for me. It never will be.

Now, I'm off to create some memorial T-shirts so that I can achieve step 3 in my plan (Profit!).

Recent reports indicate members of al anonymous brought about the momentary destruction of the SDMB. Creative Loafing has launched a retaliatory strike on 4chan.

I was asleep. I woke up, and checked my Word Feud games. There was a chat message from Rebo asking if I'd been banned too. I first assumed there was an anti - GB sweep. Then I assumed that my mild dig at OpalSnatch did me in. Then, I actually checked, and found that I was not banned. It all happened in the about four hours of sleep I got this morning.

Quite a harrowing ride...

Joe

Classic.

I was at work all day and knew nothing about any of it. I posted over there just now as a test. It works fine for me. I think you all are suffering from a modern version of War of the Worlds. This mass banning just didn't happen.

OH MY GOD are we STILL talking about this? People, get the fuck over it already! It happened more than 24 hours ago and that's all I'm hearing about. Multiples of tens were affected, yes, but that was yesterday and it's time to move on. Let's build a damn monument to mark the day and hope the Discovery Channel doesn't get wind of it.
