Greatest Hit of the '70s, Round 2a: American Pie (1972) vs. Feels So Good (1978)

"American Pie" by Don McLean (#3 song of 1972) vs. "Feels So Good" by Chuck Mangione (#21 song of 1978)

To reduce the chances that two strong songs would meet in Round 2, criteria were used to assign songs to the top or bottom half of the remaining field. "American Pie" was considered to be a relatively strong contender for being Billboard's #3 Hot Single of 1972 and for earning 89.29% of the votes cast in its Round 1 poll.

People don't like American Pie as much as I do, but I suspect that every one here likes it more than Feels So Good.

I personally don't get as much out of "American Pie" as a lot of people but I was surprised that it didn't make that Rolling Stone list. I was just double-checking that to make sure I didn't miss it since I used a secondary source and it was a very manual process to fold it into my megapoll data. But if you google you can find a lot of people expressing dismay that "Pie" was left out of the RS 500 Greatest.

It is easily a top 500 song of all time. But like NAF, I love it more than most people.

I, OTOH, hate it more than most people. As a former high school horn player, I'm giving my vote to the flugelhorn.

I think people focus on the quasi-religious aspects of the song and interpret it as more conservative than it really is.
