Despite the classic alternate-timeline episode "Yesterday's Enterprise," the character of Yar was mostly terrible. This wasn't entirely, or maybe even mostly, the fault of Denise Crosby's acting; the writers never seemed to get a handle on her. Actually the best insight to Tasha--which fits with what Crosby has said she originally envisioned--may have come indirectly in the depiction of her home world and her sister, in "Legacy"--long after Tasha herself was gone.

I think Tasha's best episode was the one where the Enterprise goes back in time and she's still onboard, but only Guinan knows she's supposed to be dead. That said, there wasn't much meat in her role, and it only served to hold back Worf from eventually becoming chief of security.
