After I went to the doctor last week, I found out that it would be another week or two until I could drive. My hubby had been working half days to get the girl from school and me to the doctor, but he couldn't keep doing that. My mom can't drive, so she couldn't come. His dad has doctor's appointments, and his mom recently had hip replacement that went bad and had to be redone, so while she's improving, she doesn't have the energy to come down. We were beginning to panic a little.
Then I remembered my college roommate and her current unemployment status (the company she worked for shut down). I called her and had the following conversation:
Me: Are you still unemployed?
She: Yes.
Me: Oh, good! Come be my driver!
She: Okay.
We flew her down to Miami from South Carolina. She got here Monday. In exchange, we're feeding her and paid for her ticket. She gets hubby to and from the bus and train stops, the girl to and from school, me to places I need to go during the day. It's also good because I haven't seen her in over five years, save one brief meeting over a meal. We've always stayed in touch, but we have had so much fun reconnecting. Also, there have been naps.
We'll probably fly her home sometime next weekend. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and I adore her for that. Everyone needs those kinds of friends.
