Let's have a couple more...

Posted 1st October 2009 at 07:25 PM by rothe'che

Okay, a couple more photos.

One thing about the desert is, you think it's empty. You pull your car over, look out, see not a damned thing moving, so you think there's nothing out there.

We went out on a tour of Curtin Springs station - over 1 million hectares that runs up to 4,500 head of cattle, down to 1.500 at the moment, and our base for our explorations of Uluru and Kata Tjuta. We were probably the first people to head out onto those particular dunes in days, maybe even weeks, so the only tracks we saw were ours, and those of desert inhabitants:

In the first one, the tracks leading from bottom right to top left are bird; the others are some kind of marsupial/hopping mouse. In the second photo, I think they're probably a small wallaby or something like that.

People tracks too:

Our tracks, leading out onto a salt lake on the property.

This is the bloke who was showing us around:

"Everyone up here calls me Uncle, you might as well do the same." Uncle Ian Barker, Territory resident his whole life, and stockman in this area for most of it.

I've also used his photo to launch a new project I've been contemplating for a while, called 100 Strangers. Pretty straightforward idea, photograph 100 people I've never met before and never will again.
