Public person/private person

Posted 12th March 2009 at 12:03 PM by 73 LeBaron

Suddenly I must give some thought to how much of a public person I choose to be. Before I moved to the Valley two years ago, I had been involved in media/entertainment in a small Deep South city for over 20 years, and I was pretty well known in the community. I had been involved in the same faith community for that whole time, and I suppose I was something of a small-bore celebrity, not that celebrity is important to me; I find my satisfaction in the performance of my duties.

The job ended; the children were essentially grown, and it was a very good opportunity to hit the reset button in a new place. I managed to pack up all that was most important to me in the big gold Imperial and moved 700 miles. Even with the instability in the broadcast industry and in the company I work for, it has been a positive change. After all, I managed to lose 100 pounds along the way.

Life changes, and I was very happy to be somewhat more anonymous than before, but opportunities have arisen to be more public. I am having some internal discussion about that (and apparent some external cogitation, to wit: this blog). It would seem that I am close to being involved in music booking and performance again. Let's just say that my previous experience was a mixed blessing. Now there has been some loose talk about getting involved in the minor league baseball franchise, too. It's been 15 years since I was a baseball announcer, and I may be too old to keep that schedule again. That's a "public persona" situation, too.

It tempts me. I won't play in a band again; the arthritis won't let me, regardless of any other inclination. The six weeks of hell before an event is not worth the one night excitement of actually producing the show, though there is very little more fun that being backstage at a Country show. Same goes for being involved in the day-to-day operation of a baseball club.

It may well be that this blogging and posting experience is also performance-oriented. I have learned that executing a quality performance is one of the most satisfying experiences I know. So, any point in discussing whether or not I choose to become a more public person may be moot, given that these various events are going to happen whether I choose them or not, and there may be professional obligations with each, so I'd just better get comfortable with being more of a public person.

Again.

How am I supposed to deal with that?
