To Raff or not to Raff...
I popped in and registered awhile back and I do check in and read this board and I occasionally post, but I've never really moved in if you know what I mean.
Not sure me & this board are a very good fit. I'm ponderously serious and very badly meme-impaired; I'm actually not much of a whiner but I'm self-important in most of the same ways that whiners generally are, if you know what I mean. My "I don't get it Quotient" for the 'Dope is about 30% but in here it's closer to 85%. I hardly ever know what folks are talking about (admittedly that could be because I don't read all the threads in here... but I sure as heck don't read all the threads on the Dope either). Even when threads seem to be about superficially serous subject matter, I'm never sure whether it's pretend-serious (like threads about "So-and-So for moderator", or the various just-playing-around "Box" threads) and when it's real (as the Roo threads apparently were/are?) On the other hand, I keep trying to just ignore the tromp of jackboots over at the Dope and write off board politics over there as a lost cause, and just enjoy the threads as an apolitical board citizen, but those little bursts of execution-squad gunfire and pools of blood on the ground just wreck my mood and make me sick to my stomach.

I recognize you from over there and hope that you'll give us more of a try. I don't recall if you're much of a threadstarter but if you are, try to start (another) one here that would interest you. See if it flies.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - most of US don't even know what's going on around here. We just like jumping in with both boots on and splashing around in everyone else's puddles
 If you can get used to the more freeform nature of things, it's a good place. We've got some good people here, who I'm particularly proud of. Even if you do tread on some toes, "Mea Culpa" and it's all good.

Yeah, it's a small enough board that the in-jokes tend to spread faster and farther than they do on the SDMB. But heck -- worst that happens is you post a bit, realize we're all dicks and wander off. No harm in dabbling.

The thing is, you can MAKE an in-joke. The whole "Dinosaurs in avatars" thing that went around for a week or so was because threnny and I were playing Dinosaurs in chat, then I posted a thread about it and everyone climbed aboard the bandwagon.
It's all about confidence. To hash up another tired meme - We're a lot like brain-damaged labradors around here. Blow a dog whistle and throw a ball, most of us will chase it until we find our tails again.

Yeah, I drop in here intermittently (like now), having less free time and more insomnia than I uster, and usually I find I've missed some bodacious meme, or someone just ran through a thread naked, or a topic on which I could have made ponderous or witty observations now has 65 posts and everything I would have said has already been said, twice, and Roo has left some concern in it too.
So what I'm sayin' is stick around, it's good clean fun mostly. Just watch out for Fenris, he's a sneaky git.

Jump in. I didn't know what the hell was going on when I first started, but nobody seemed to much care. It's a really laid-back crowd here, and I think there's more chance to contribute here than over there: being smaller, if people pick up on what you're posting and like it, you'll get a lot of encouragement and support. Plus our attention spans are too short to do politics or bear grudges, and I can't even swear that I've read the rules, assuming we have any.

It's interesting that this board, which came about after the cunt-ban @ the durp, is actually much more civil. The use of invectives tend to lose the appeal when someone calls SmartAleq a cunt and her response is... "Yeah, so?" I think this is also the reason the Pit gets so little traffic. It's not that Veb broke it, it's just that people don't get excited enough about small slights and the occasional faux pas, to make the effort of pitting another Raffer.
I'm quite sure that Giraffe himself hasn't got a clue about half of what's going on around here and if you're hitting 15 per cent comprehension, I'm certain that's par for the course. RadEd has just started a poll asking "Do you have boobs?" and I have no idea why or who is supposed to answer; that didn't stop me from replying though. One thing - after a really short while, you'll be able to pick up on when we actually are serious. I don't know how, but somehow I almost know. Apart from Muskrat's custom title.

The Raf is a great board, you won't find nicer and more helpful people anywhere else. I have asked some dumb questions and gotten nothing but patience and good answers from the peeps here.
Sometimes there is a good shit slinging fight, but most of the time it's all said sarcastically. There are only a few people here that really get the posters going in a bad way...most everyone else gets along pretty well. There isn't that undercurrent of hostility I always felt at the Dope. I'm too new to have much say but I do like it here. It's nice not to get flamed every time I post. Stick around, it's a nice place to hang out.

Just tossing my .02 here.
I've found that I don't understand all the inter-personal situations that gone on here either. But I really like this board. If you ask a serious question it's answered politely. It just takes a while to get to know what some people are talking about here. I think it's a fun place to post without people being vicious. I love the coup's that take place here and some threads make me howl. It keeps me interested.

There's really no way to know how much you'd like the place, or not, other than to kick the tires a few times and take it for a spin. Overall folks really are pretty quick to catch the tone from others. If you'd rather limit the goofing around factor then JtF or PPR are probably better bets for you. Don't worry for a second about not getting all the jokes. I spend way too much time here but don't get some of them either. People really don't care. S'truth. You can either ignore them or just ask what the hell is up now. You won't get cliquish sniggering behind the hands; most often you get a happy explanation of what's going on and an invitation to join whatever insanity has been cooked up. There won't be any hard feelings either if you don't want to. Most folks around are idiotically amiable-- it really is like hanging out with a herd of Golden Retrivers. I'd say just noodle around for a while to get a feel for how well the place might suit you, and in what ways. Contrary to first impressions, there are some fairly serious folks here who just don't care to join in the frequent shenanigans. So long as you don't mind that the silly stuff goes on, nobody will mind if you don't want to play, often or at all.

Well I think this is a stupid place to post. Threads are never serious enough, and there are way too many in-jokes. I would never stoop so low as to waste copious amounts of time posting to a message board even remotely like this, let alone this particular one.

AHunter, I always (or at least usually) enjoyed your posts on the Dope, and I wish you'd post more here.
In fact, there's a lot of people I wish would come over here and post. Whatever was at the SDMB in the early years, it's pretty much gone, at least for me. Some of it might be me...it seems that as soon as I get in on something it goes to hell. (Okay, GB, ban me now.) The last best fun I had there was Amnesia Weekend. I don't know if you can create such a thing--it seems like it just happens, then it's gone--but it's worth a try, anyway, right?
