Shameless self-promotion
So here's what I've been up to, in case you were curious.
First, my floral business was asked to provide floral hair crowns for a big hair/makeup photo shoot sponsored by Proctor & Gamble on one of the big-name wedding planning websites, A Practical Wedding. You can see two of the five crowns I made here and here. Soon a DIY tutorial (how to make the crowns) post I wrote will appear on the site. I got to play with flowers in SF, watch professionals do hair and makeup, and be part of a big-time shoot! It was pretty exciting. Second, I've been volunteering with a brand new theater production company here in the north bay. We're putting on two shows in Petaluma the first two weekends of August: Picasso at the Lapin Agile (written by Steve Martin) and Harvey (written by Mary Chase). I'm the stage manager for Picasso and it's been both a lot of fun and quite challenging, as I've never done any stage managing before. For any 'raffers in the North Bay or the Bay Area who are interested in attending one of the shows, check out the company homepage (Three Rabbit Productions) for showtime and ticket information. (Also, Supes designed the company logo and the publicity artwork for both shows!) |

Nifty - I saw the hair tutorials but didn't realize they were a P&G thing. I wish I could see the Picasso - I tend to like Steve Martin's stuff. What all does a stage manager manage? (besides the stage, natch)

Basically a stage manager is responsible for administrative stuff and communication between the director and the actors. So when the director has info, I disseminate it. During rehearsals, I track lines to make sure people are saying them correctly and give lines when an actor needs them (though at this stage, it's rare that they need them) and keep track of/write down blocking (where actors move on the stage and when). After rehearsal, I send emails to the actors telling them where any lines they missed or skipped or paraphrased or any changes they made to blocking so they can correct them for the next rehearsal. A stage manager is also responsible for coordinating between production people (lights/sound/stage construction/props/costumes/makeup/etc) and the actors/director, and calls light/sound/other cues during the performance itself.
