Looking Glass Night Zero

In another moment Alice was through the glass, and had jumped lightly down into the Looking-glass room. The very first thing she did was to look whether there was a fire in the fireplace, and she was quite pleased to find that there was a real one, blazing away as brightly as the one she had left behind. 'So I shall be as warm here as I was in the old room,' thought Alice: 'warmer, in fact, because there'll be no one here to scold me away from the fire. Oh, what fun it'll be, when they see me through the glass in here, and can't get at me!'

Then she began looking about, and noticed that what could be seen from the old room was quite common and uninteresting, but that all the rest was as different as possible. For instance, the pictures on the wall next the fire seemed to be all alive, and the very clock on the chimney-piece (you know you can only see the back of it in the Looking-glass) had got the face of a little old man, and grinned at her.

'They don't keep this room so tidy as the other,' Alice thought to herself, as she noticed several of the chessmen down in the hearth among the cinders: but in another moment, with a little 'Oh!' of surprise, she was down on her hands and knees watching them. The chessmen were walking about, two and two!

'Here are the Red King and the Red Queen,' Alice said (in a whisper, for fear of frightening them), 'and there are the White King and the White Queen sitting on the edge of the shovel—and here are two castles walking arm in arm—I don't think they can hear me,' she went on, as she put her head closer down, 'and I'm nearly sure they can't see me. I feel somehow as if I were invisible—'

Here something began squeaking on the table behind Alice, and made her turn her head just in time to see one of the White Pawns roll over and begin kicking: she watched it with great curiosity to see what would happen next.

Thus begins the Zeroth Night on the other side of the Looking Glass. Please confirm receipt of your PMs here, and you may begin discussing strategy at once.

It may help you.

It may not.

Night Zero will continue through Monday, November 26, unless a majority (51%) of players wish it to start on Friday, November 23. Vote for the date on a New Line, if you would be so kind.

PM received. Do I really need a role? Isn't a flying squid Carrollian enough? Honestly, it fits right in with the tweedledum and the dees and the cats and caterpillars and rabbits in waistcoats and such...

No Thanksgiving turkey for me, I'm afraid. Excepting my own children, the nearest other American is a 40-minute drive away, and we've hardly spoken since I learned he was a Ron Paul supporter who blamed the Illuminati for present-day malaise.

Actually, it's all the same to me whether we start Friday or Monday. Hope my joke doesn't throw off your vote count, SisterCoyote.

Several new players this game, neato! (Hey EnderBoy, aka Enderw24!) FYI, we have a couple of convenience features you may enjoy:

1. Vote / unvote / askmod tags

[vote]vote Giraffe[/vote] =

[unvote]unvote Giraffe[/unvote] =

[askmod]SisterCoyote, what are you wearing right now? :pervert:[/askmod] = SisterCoyote, what are you wearing right now?

2. A vote-counting robot

http://www.giraffeboards.com/mafia_votecount.php

Anyone can use it, just enter the thread url in the box. (It does require properly-formatted votes, so it's always worth a double check, but it at least gives you a reasonable starting point.) See this thread for details.

You also have me, one of the best Mafia players in the history of the game. Sure, I led lynches on nothing but Townspeople in the last game (to the point that scum left me alive until Day six despite claiming Town Cop on Day two), but don't worry: I never let past results keep me from charging full steam ahead in future games. I can't be wrong every game, right?

Not all the lynch efforts you led resulted in lynching Townspeople; I never got lynched.

Don't worry about me this game, though; I have the role of Sir Not-Playing-In-This-Game.

If I hadn't died on Day six, you were at the top of my scum list. Sure, Flying Squid was a bit suspicious, but not nearly as suspicious as Tinker getting a result on you the Night you were on the mission. So scum's real mistake in that game was killing me -- if they'd left me alive, I might have still managed to squeak out a win for them.

Me too.

Which is pretty funny, given my threat to join your team if no one commented on my ironclad case on Total Ulla (Town Doctor). Little did I know I was already a member.

I am forbidden to access the vote count robot, for some reason.

Which means I'll be doing the vote counts entirely by hand

Which probably means lots of errors.

What does it say when you try to access it?

Edit: Never mind, I see the same error. Fixing it...

As you can see, four votes got left off because although they were blue and bolded, they didn't start with the word "vote".

It actually originally used to do that, but people like to bold and blue the names of confirmed Townspeople as the game progresses, which looked like votes to the script and confused everything. I'm not smart enough to figure out how to code around that, so instead I decided to require the use of the word vote as part of a valid vote.

Something else I could do would be to include the word vote in the vote tags, i.e. [vote]Giraffe[/vote] would resolve to vote Giraffe. But then people couldn't use the vote tags as shortcuts to bold and blue Townspeople names, so that's not a perfect solution either.

Really, we just need to hire an intern and lock them in a closet somewhere with a laptop and make them give us a vote count whenever we want it. We could shock them whenever they make a mistake.

ARGH! All I want is consistency! Look, just get together with idle and the two of you decide if vote tags include the word vote or no. Clearly my brain is incapable of remembering which board has which conventions.

I fail to see the problem here. People shouldn't be abusing the [vote] tags like this in the first place. If all they want is to highlight players names, they can do it the old fashioned way, with [b] and [color] tags!

Sheesh...kids these days...always looking for a quick fix...they have no idea how easy they have it...

Let's just code it so that the [vote] tags will parse the text within, adding the word "Vote" if it isn't already present, but not if it's already there...otherwise we'll end up with things like

Vote: Vote peeker

which makes no sense at all, because Vote peeker isn't even playing this game.

Though it does give me an idea for a user name for my next sock puppet.

OK, you've inspired me to take another crack at figuring out how to use logic within custom BB codes. Here's my first attempt, the [testvote] tag, which strips anything that looks like vote or vote: from the text and then reassembles it with a uniform vote [target]:

[testvote]VOTE: coding[/testvote] = [testvote]VOTE: coding[/testvote]

Let's see if the vote-counting robot can still parse it...

Nope. The robot is running on the server, so all it sees in the page source is the javascript function, not the final prettied up text. I'll have to think about this. (It may be the easiest thing to do is just give it a hint that the vote tags are being used via a div tag or script comment and then just do all the parsing in Perl.)

OK, I think I have everything working. I've replaced the vote and unvote tags with smarter versions to standardize the vote and unvote text, and rewritten the robot to properly parse them. Let's test it out...

Now you need to have the vote counting robot be able to take into account player claims, actual mod claims, and detective claims to color code the players voting Am I asking for too much as a newbie

No seriously, you did a great job, and I'm just busting your chops! Such a helpful tool and better than doing it by hand all of the time like I had been doing! Thanks!

At this point, Friday or "whichever" combined are winning; however, I will be AFK for pretty much the rest of toDay. Will try to have Day One up by noon pacific on Friday but can't promise anything; I never know what my family is going to spring on me at the last minute.
