Shortest Day Of The Year

The Solstice is today.

Time to beat drums to bring back the sun.

What comes after the shortest day, is 6 months of days getting longer. I long that.

It is also Short People Appreciation Day. If you are under 5'5", today is your day!

Atomic clocks, combined with precise astronomical measurements, have revealed that the length of a day is suddenly getting longer, and scientists don't know why.

I appreciate "Short People". It was one of Randy's best works...

I just want it to stay dark during the early AM so that when I go to bed at the crack of dawn, I don't have the sun shining in my eyes.

A happy solstice to everyone!!!

I see what you did there.

I mean, you did do that on purpose, right?

Yeah, we’re only a handful of months away from us all claiming the 100+ degree days are so much nicer than getting cozy next to a fireplace in winter.

You oughta be grateful. If you didn't have the weather to bitch about, you'd be in danger of having to face your real problems in life.

I kind of dig the winter solstice, but it almost always falls on my brother's birthday. Between that and Christmas preparations I never really find time to contemplate the uniqueness of the day and maybe even tap into any associated latent spirituality that I've inherited from the ancients. But I usually do get pizza and birthday cake, so I'll call it even.

For most of my adult life I would have told you that I prefer winter to summer and maybe even night to day. In my old age I'm not so sure. But I still do love relative quiet at nights this time of year, and the brilliant winter full moons that light up so much of the night when they come around... the next one is in just a few days.

Anyway, don't get fooled by the longer days. Coldest part of the year is still yet to come.
