In 1970, without being aware of climate change but in an attempt to address broad environmental concerns of the public, the Federal government passed the three major acts reducing pollution*, and formed seven administrations^. These remain our strongest environmental protections. Nonprofits were formed. Even companies leapt in.#
It worked. We repaired the hole in the ozone, stopped rivers from burning, cleaned up dangerously polluted areas, increased the safety of ocean animals, changed farming practices - but we didn't know climate change was a thing. In the mid-80's, we knew. Enough science had happened that average folks and government representatives & staff recognized the idea of climate change. It's possible we could have stopped it. Unlike 1970, we FAFO. We passed the point where climate change is reversible. In the future, science may resolve this, or the large mammals may die. Transformed utterly, a terrible beauty is born. Here's a nice video to cheer you back up ![]() ![]() *National Environmental Policy Act, Environmental Impact Statements, Mine Safety and Health Act, and Clean Air Act. ^Council on Environmental Quality, Environmental Protection Administration, National Air Pollution Control Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Occupational Health and Safety Administration, and Water Quality Administration, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. #Two examples: GM begins making cars that don't need lead. The Natural Resources Defence Council was founded. Nice pictures from University of Bern and the US EPA Last edited by stormie; 10th February 2025 at 02:12 PM. |
