TV Show Theme Megapoll: Nominations and Discussion
Let's pick the best TV Show Theme!
Rules:
Judging Criteria:
Nominations: I have started with a list of the best theme songs consolidated from Rolling Stone, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, Paste, and Music Grotto. After removing some that didn't meet the criteria and a few that were just plain awful, I have 161 entries, which means we need 95 more. I'll add the current list in the next post. So add your nominations and if we get more than 95, we'll have a play-in. But look over the list of entries first. All those classic themes you're thinking of? They're already in the list. Think harder. Special bonus - everyone gets two "Golden Tickets" that are automatically in, no play-in vote required. Indicate which ones with an asterisk or something, or I'll just go with your first two picks. All I need is the name of the show, but if you also include a Youtube link to the theme as it appeared in the show, I will be very appreciative. |

A note on the absence of the Cosby Show from the list: given that Bill Cosby is a serial rapist, I didn't feel the theme deserved automatic entry. But I also don't want to unilaterally decide it isn't allowed. The show was more than just Bill.
So if someone wants to nominate it and enough people vote it in, it's allowed. |

Darkwing Duck
DuckTales Criminal Minds* Night Court* (and how did this not make on the best theme songs list??? ![]() Remington Steele (yes, it's a spoken introduction, but I'm talking about the music that plays under and after that) Bosom Buddies (My Life) MacGuyver (the original series, I have no idea if the reboot has a decent theme song) Airwolf Hardcastle & McCormick (Drive, not the other one) House MD Rawhide Family Ties (Without Us) Perfect Strangers Punky Brewster 21 Jump Street The Fall Guy Roseanne?? I liked the theme song, I liked the original show, but Roseanne's later political crap bothers me |

I have to nominate The Persuaders (John Barry). I don't think the show gained much traction in the U.S. but it was yuge in yurp.
Also - it's the most Bond theme ever, apart from the original Bond theme: ![]() ![]() I predict MI will win the whole thing, and rightfully so. Hawaii 5-0, Hill St. B and Cheers will go deep. Maybe M*A*S*H. |

There are so many good songs and so much nostalgia in this. I've counted 30-40 songs that are top 10.

![]() ![]() But...that's the same music as the National Geographic fanfare above. And everything I can find online says Elmer Bernstein wrote the piece for National Geographic. Someone on Reddit says the Wild Kingdom video is dubbed with the wrong theme. And yes, I can find other Wild Kingdom videos with a different theme. But I know that song as Wild Kingdom, and I knew it that way long before Youtube. Is this the Mandela Effect, and I'm conflating my memories of watching both Wild Kingdom and National Geographic? Or did Wild Kingdom maybe start using the NG theme in the 70s? Does anyone remember? |

I remember that one as the National Geographic theme not the Mutual of Omaha theme.

As soon as I went to bed last night, I started thinking of more.
First up: another play-in? Monk is already on the list for seasons 2+, the theme "It's a Jungle Out There" by Randy Newman. But Monk had a different them for season 1 and when they changed, many fans and press wished that they would revert to the older theme. Monk even mocked this in the season 2 episode "Mr. Monk and the TV Star" in which a tv star's wife was murdered. Many of the minor characters were fans of his show but told other characters they hated the new theme and complained that tv shows shouldn't change themes like that. So, here's the them from Monk, Season 1 for a play-in: ![]() ![]() |

TroutMan, thanks so much for doing this! I love your plan for setting up the field. Here are my nominations:
I tried to find YouTube links that best-matched the "version used in the show" criteria but that wasn't always straightforward and sometimes meant a sacrifice in sound quality; feel free to switch any out if desired. This Week in Baseball had equally great but totally different opening and end themes; I've suggested the opening theme but I would be just as happy with the closing theme if anyone wants to go to bat for it. I am NOT nominating The Nanny, Monday Night Football, The Facts of Life, or The Banana Splits but I thought I'd mention them in case anyone else wants to... they seem like potential "I can't believe we forgot...!" candidates. I am also NOT nominating Marlo and the Magic Movie Machine, but its theme has been a life-long earworm so I'm putting it here as therapy or to be a dick or something. If anyone is half-interested, the theme starts in earnest (and gets ear-wormy) around 1:16: ![]() ![]() |

That is a show I had completely forgotten existing. I feel like it was on extra early. Before the Saturday morning cartoons got started.

Excellent. I intended to nominate both DuckTales and TaleSpin, saw that you had taken care of DuckTales, and then forgot to go back and pick up TaleSpin. I'll do that below.

Nifty! Great choices, both for "Heavy Action" and for advocating that the opening theme vs. closing theme for TWiB be subject to a play in vote. I was trying to show restraint in the number of my nominations but since TroutMan is cool with a big play-in field I'll just go ahead and nominate the other two I mentioned, plus TaleSpin from above:

Scratch your voting itch with two play-ins to choose which season's theme song will represent The Wire and Doctor Who.
And keep the nominations coming! |

The "Cleveland Rocks" version for The Drew Carey Show seems clearly to me the best version, but I guess someone out there might have a wrong opinion? And then there's the Cheap Trick version of That 70's Show versus not-Cheap Trick, which again seems clear. |

Fair enough. I still think you're incorrect, but I like any opportunity to vote, so a poll is upcoming.

Firefly needs to be added to the nomination list, which I can't believe I didn't think of earlier.

ETA: It just suddenly hit me: Wait, maybe this was on the original list. I didn't check. So I checked now, and it's there. ![]() Last edited by Kat; 25th October 2023 at 04:45 PM. |
