Raffer Temperament Test
So, where do you fit in? Choleric, Phlegmatic, Sanguine, or Melancholic?
About 20 years ago, managers in my company were sent to a training program that (among other things) administered this test. My manager then came back and offered it to us if we were interested. I thought at first it was just new age psychobabble nonsense, but came around to seeing it as fairly perceptive. For example, when we were acquired by another company, that manager and our immediate manager were put together and we soon realized they were twin sons from different mothers. Their personalities and management styles were virtually identical, and so were their scores. We had a lunch meeting where the scores were distributed without names, and I was able to match them up pretty damn closely to department members; two people had fairly close scores and similar personalities, and I guessed wrong there. For the record, I am strongly in the Phlegmatic category. Lounsbury, 100 Nonny dollars if you are not squarely in the Choleric category. Why do I think so? Because Phlegmatics can piss Cholerics right the fuck off. And yeah, we can be passive/agressive, so there's that... |

Sanguine. It wasn't a surprise
![]() On MB tests I always score ENTJ. |

It tells me I am Sanguine. However, the four bars seem pretty close (there is no scale).

Phlegmatic with melancholic a close second.

Melancholic (and I called it, accurately, for that site's research), then sanguine, then phlegmatic, then choleric.
Your temperament is melancholic. The melancholic temperament is fundamentally introverted and thoughtful. Melancholic people often were perceived as very (or overly) pondering and considerate, getting rather worried when they could not be on time for events. Melancholics can be highly creative in activities such as poetry and art - and can become preoccupied with the tragedy and cruelty in the world. Often they are perfectionists. They are self-reliant and independent; one negative part of being a melancholic is that they can get so involved in what they are doing they forget to think of others. INTJ, usually. Cannot remember what other result I've had from Meyers-Briggs, but it might have been ENTJ. |

Still somewhat melancholic, but things seem to be flattening out with age. Or maybe I've just developed a strong "central tendency".

Sanguine, almost a tie with Phlegmatic.

Yep, with phlegmatic in a close second, followed by melancholic and choleric. Not that surprising. I've known all along that I'm in a "leadership" position mostly because I follow the "leadership" training our company puts out.

I ended up as phlegmatic, followed closely by melancholic.
I'm almost always an INFP. I think I can guess what choleric is. Anyone got a description of sanguine? |

And they asked that question more than once, IIRC.

Phlegmatic, with a side order of melancholic.

Not quite. It was "I never slam the door," versus "I slam doors." I disagreed mildly on the former--I have slammed a few, when worked up--and disagreed strongly on the latter; I don't go around slamming doors.
There were some other not-quite-opposite pairs, like "I seldom get mad," versus "I get angry easily." I'll tell you the question that was weird to me: "I bet a lot of people with multiple personalities are just faking." What? Is this a common idea? And what can it possibly be thought to mean, that one thinks this? |

It's a trick question. They're just trying to find out how you feel about your other personalities.

I answered just as you did re the slamming doors. I'm sure there were other questions geared toward gauging the degree to which you respond to situation with Y, but the slamming doors one stood out for me. Quote:

Choleric. Having read the description, I'm not surprised. I'd prefer to think of "bad tempered" (from the wiki on the four tempers) as "highly energized/polarized/passionate."
Prior to reading any descriptions I would have guessed sanguine, because I think of myself as pretty chill these days. That was my #2. Maybe it was colored by my tendency to slam doors. I was broken of that habit by losing my door as a child, but I still feel the urge. In MB I'm an INTJ. |
