June's Already Jacked - minirants
Marlo Thomcat went in to get spayed yesterday and came home unspayed because of an abnormal AST liver value. A repeat was done in the afternoon but it was still too high to surgerate. The next launch window is June 15th, which means thirteen more days of having to listen to nonstop yowling.
I will never, ever take in another cat that isn't spayed or neutered. I'm going fucking nuts, and no amount of cannabis can make this tolerable. |

Huh. Usually it doesn't take that much weed to get a cat stoned.

A friend lost his mother after a long slog with Alzheimer's back in early April.
Today he found out his father, who had been experiencing speech difficulties that were chalked up to stress over his wife's decline and maybe TIAs, actually has aggressive brain tumors. 2020 is such a shitshow. Last edited by Solfy; 3rd June 2020 at 06:00 PM. |

That sucks, I'm so sorry to hear that...I had high expectations for 2020, it was my 40th HS reunion, we're on track to pay the house off in October, I was really psyched for 2020...and it has basically sucked so far...oldest got COVID-19, he's OK, but still dealing with lingering effects...
It's nice out, I am a glass half-full person, it will get better... |

Last night, after a long day of going to Baltimore to see the surgeon, then having yet again another problem getting pain meds, the cherry on top was that the circuit with the fridge and the dishwasher crapped out. The breaker didn't pop, and I was going crazy looking for a GFCI that blew. Luckily, there's a plug right next to the fridge on a different circuit, and I was able to plug it in and save our groceries.
![]() But this morning, troubleshooting continued. Long story short, the GFCI in my studio by the sink appears to have been the culprit. I replaced it (temporarily) with a regular outlet, and next time I'm near a hardware emporium, I'll get another GFCI. At least everything's working now. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of stuff on that circuit, and no easy way to divide it without taking down wallboards. On the other hand, it worked fine for the last 15 years or so... and I can add another label to the circuit breaker panel - not too many are labeled. |

Did resetting the GFCI not work?

There are children outside my apartment that have been playing all day (with their parents' blessing) in an ephemeral retention pond. It doesn't permanently have water in it, so it makes it not so bad as it hasn't had time to breed nasty bugses, but it's still the lowest point around surrounded by a lot of asphalt the water ran off of so playing in it still sounds pretty gross to me.

Dear Cud-Chewing Bovine:
When you darling daughter is running around the grocery store faking a wracking cough and saying, "I've got the virus, ha ha!", your approprate response is not to laugh and say, "That's nice dear." |

Dear Cud-Chewing Bovine:
If the store is nice enough to provide you with disinfecting wipes to use on the carts, please throw them away in the trash can you will find directly underneath them. We have posted THREE signs, with arrows, showing the location of the can, asking you to throw them away. Please do not leave them in the cart. Please do not drop them on the floor. Please do not put them on a shelf full of merchandise. |

Reset only worked temporarily and sporadically, which is why I think it has failed. A new GFCI outlet is only around $20 - I think we can manage that without blowing our budget.
![]() And since replacing the old one, we've not had any more problems with that circuit. Huzzah!! |

If it blows again after you install the new GFI, start checking out the equipment plugged into it.

We had problems in the kitchen on circuit that foolishly includes the Fridge with an old mixer. I rewired the mixer and no more problem at least. But I dislike having the fridge on a circuit like that. |

Once we had a failed GFI because it got tripped a bunch of times by a huge colony of honey bees that had taken up residence in the kitchen wall. They were so quiet you couldn't hear a thing. The electrician got stung about a dozen times when they came swarming out, but went back in there anyway and put the cover back on to keep them out of the house. Dude earned his union scale that day.

*Well, technically, the fridge outlet is next to the sink and so should have it but there's nowhere else to plug the fridge in, so fuck it. The part people might electrocute themselves at the sink with is protected properly, and that's all safety actually demands. |

So I just accidentally booted the bookshelf walking by in flip flops. The big toenail took most of the hit and now its busted to the quick. Golly gee that sure tickles.

Its much better today, thanks. The toe itself isn't even bruised but the nail is pretty sore. Had to snooze with the covers off it. I can walk barefoot alright, but shoes squish the toe a little and that's a nope. I've got a ratty old pair of closed toe sandals for around the shack.
All those years of ballet lessons wasted. |

There's not much to see after I trimmed off the shrapnel. I just don't bruise much unless chunks are missing.

Never had that exact thing happen but I can empathize. One time I hiked the Cotswold Way in England - 105 miles of it - in 4 days - without remembering to clip my toenails beforehand. My nails and toes were so tender at the end that I seriously considered getting a pedicure for the first time in my life because not only would they be gentle but I wouldn't then have to find a toenail clipper myself and feel guilty about buying one when I didn't need one. But I didn't know how much they costed or what the typical wait was so I just suffered through it, occasionally mincing when walking, until I got home.

I've broken my toenail down into the pink attached part and it hurts like a bitch. Consider putting lidocane on it. Lidocane is a base ingredient in some teething, bugbite, and boil meds.
yikes today I was out and jeebus. Two wrong things: CDC and my Dept of Public Health is now reporting only 'confirmed' results. It's not clear if this includes people who were never tested but saw or contacted a doc who said they probably had covid and should do X. This makes it impossible to compare early data to late data. Recent data shows the number of new cases each day has not declined, and has increased in some locations. So, is this true? I have a big YIKES because people are full-on acting like their is minimal contamination. Bastards. I'm developing a fashionable contamination ensemble. For a certain value of 'fashionable' |

JEEBUS!!!
AHHHH I don't even like to think of that. As a youth I chopped my little toe a bit and hand to have the nail removed. A thick not-nail thick skinlike tissue replaced it. Since it's my baby toe it's still polishable, and it doesn't hurt . . . I don't remember it hurting me after the nail was removed. Maybe the doc put something on it. So it looks weird and either hurts less than a long nail split, or I just don't remember because I was having fun. |

Poison ivy is out of control!! I just walked around my front yard with a sprayer of PI killer, and I couldn't believe how much is out there! I guess because of the mild winter, yes? Well, it's been sprayed, and the next couple of days will show whether the spray is any good.
Meanwhile, gotta keep the baby away from that area of the yard - last thing we need is a toddler with seepy, itchy skin. |

KILL IT! KILL IT!
The bane of my backyard existence is the stupid chokeweed that has taken over everything in the last two years. You can pull and pull and pull but unless you have a way to get to the real roots...which are usually ten feet away and deep underground...fuggeddabouddit. The problem is that it crawls quickly up the fenced garden (where my adorable weedlettes are growing big and strong in canvas bags), covers the fence, and attracts powdery mildew. Cannabis and powdery mildew do not make a Happy Hoser. ![]() |

I've already had my share of poison ivy this year - somehow, a leaf brushed down the inside of my right arm. It's been 3 weeks, and I can still see a faint trace of where the nasty stuff was.
I don't know what I sprayed, but I'll look for Ortho next time I'm in Lowe's. I know there's more of the 3-leaf evil out there. I did order some arm protector sleeves that'll go from my palms to over my elbows. They'll work with my garden gloves to protect my arms, theoretically. Then I can yank the nasty stuff out by hand! |

Just griping about poor communications between IT people and me.
I'm working remotely and I wanted to set it up so that I could access my work email from my iPhone, like most people can. But I'm not very bright about these things, and my dumbth irritates folks with technical skills. Not wanting to bug my husband, I started an email communication with the IT guys at work. They sent me an email about how to set this up and it was so abbreviated and cryptic that I was in despair. Long story short, their communication skills sucked and they made assumptions about how sophisticated I was despite my telling them that I had very little experience with apps. I finally had to get my husband involved and he was testy with me. He also abused my firm's IT department, saying their security was almost nonexistent. He works for about the most secure and biggest tech company in the world, so my little law firm's security was ridiculous to him. Here's how my IT guys could have written their email: "While on your iPhone, go to the app store and find and download Microsoft email. Then, when prompted, enter your work email and this password: XXX." How hard was that? But the email I was sent made no sense, and even my testy husband said that their communications skills were abysmal. Small rant, I know, but it was a needless kerfuffle and I'm still pissed off about it. |

Lame rant, but...I have this client, who is (1) sweet, and pays on time, and (2) a horrible PITA. So months ago, he emails me photos to insert into his ebook that I am making. I insert them, make the book, send it off to him. Today he emails that he has "lost" a couple of the photos and can I find them and email them back to him?
Now what I'm thinking is, why doesn't he just go to the sent email file, find the one where he sent them to me, and get them there. Right? Well it turns out that they were in a whole batch of things he sent. And they all had names like DSC1030456. So he doesn't know which ones are which. In other words, he doesn't want to go sorting through those photos; he wants me to do that. This is going to take some amount of time. Less than an hour, but some. I should be able to charge for this, right? Aaargh! Okay. End of lame rant. |

I ran into a woman at the gym once who had had her toenails surgically removed! Because of chronic ingrown toenails or somesuch. Until she pointed it out I actually had not noticed.
I wonder if she gets a discount on her pedicures? (I didn't think to ask. Also it might have been insensitive.) Anyway...I lost a nail from a big toe years ago. It hung on for the longest time. I thought I might actually keep it. It got loose and flopped around and eventually fell off. And it grew back. Took a long time as I recall, but it's there now. ETA, re: my toenail. The colors it turned, before finally falling off! Black, green, purple. I realize this wasn't actuall the toenail changing color but it sure looked like it. Toenails, what are they good for? |

I feel your pain. Every time the business rules change I call the city shelter to see if they are allowing volunteers back in. So far no dice. I even went to the homes of my 2 local dogwalkees to ask if I could just walk their dogs! The dogs were game but the people looked askance.

When it comes to delivering orders when they say they will, Amazon is now 2-3 in my last five orders. Of the three bad orders, two were flat-out lost, and one came 2 days later.
One of the ones that was lost was today - I was going to leave the house around 12:15, but as I stood up from my desk to get ready, I got an Amazon notification: "your package is 8 stops away!" Since one of the items was an SSD for a client, replacing The World's Slowest Hard Drive in their laptop, I figured I'd wait for it. The Prime van came down my street, made a u-turn and never came back. So I tracked it all day. I don't know if the drivers make it up as they go, or if Amazon has some kind of GPS system they follow... but the driver next delivered packages in the subdivision next door, then went down a long road by a small lake, then went down a road behind our old townhouse, then went back down the lake road, then went back to the subdivision next door, then went past my road again, then back up. Nothing made any sense: why deliver packages to an address in the back of a large subdivision, then drive three miles away, then come back to that same subdivision to deliver stuff the next street over? Well, long story short, Amazon said they delivered my order at 16:33, when I have a screen cap showing that the my order was still listed as "out for delivery" at 16:29 and the driver had already returned to the nearby Amazon Fulfillment Center. It's six miles from my house to the Fulfillment Center; according to Google Maps it's a 13 minute drive now with minimal traffic. Think the driver was somehow able to make that drive during rush hour in 4 minutes? Nah. EDIT: While chatting with Amazon's "Gosh, I wish there was something I could do!" customer service, I ordered the same SSD from BestBuy.com for same-day pick-up at the same price. Before the Amazon CSR and I were done, I got a text that my Best Buy order was ready for (curbside) pickup. |
