Troll in the Roe v. Wade Thread

I was going to put this in the Mode Loop but decided to put this discussion to the membership.

Some background: I am heartbroken over the recent SCOTUS decision. As a man though, I have kept largely quiet on the subject because most of my real life female friends on social media are of the opinion that men should stfu for the moment, let the women vent and then actually go out on do something. (One friend was equally upset that men were largely staying quiet so I reached out to her personally). So as a result, I haven't commented on our own thread but I have been reading all of it.

A couple of men in that thread have made some very pointed and very rude posts. These have been reported and all of those reports have been from other men.

My take on things is that the Raffer women have been holding their own just find and don't need me to boot the offensive men. But then what the hell do I know?

I am going to let the community consensus help me decide. How should be proceed?

They both should be boxed forever. It really isn't a thread suitable for trolling. And I did flag both of the trolls in that thread and put one on ignore. The one on ignore isn't a troll but too obnoxious to live outside the box.

But I am more than fine with being boxed or banned for having a philosophical/political conversation in PPR, since this board has been permitted to degenerate into an undifferentiated wailing wall anyway. Agree with AJH or not, I didn't see his initial post in that thread as trolling at all. On the contrary, I found it an interesting take. I don't agree with all of it for reasons that aren't germane to this discussion, but it wasn't a personal attack on anyone and didn't come across as being inflammatory for the sake of being inflammatory.

I usually find that I a) don't totally agree with him b) don't totally disagree with him and c) usually find his posts an interesting, if coarse, addition to discussions that are otherwise circle jerks.

Diamonds was a troll. AJH isn't. You don't have to like him, but he contributes more than Hurr Durr Look at Me! His posts are no more offensive than Lounsy's, and 5x more though provoking.

The Women of Gweebo might be holding our own, but it would be a hell of a lot nicer not having to either shout down the trolls again, entreat others to put them on ignore again, or at least not quote them so the rest of us don't have to see their posts again.

asahi is just useless and I've had AJH on ignore for ages. I guess his worth is something where YMMV and to me he's about as useful as that contraption they used to use to move the space shuttle around.

Speaking for myself, I believe that turning this national shitshow around is going to take the efforts of not just women but men too, whether it's picketing, pushing through legislation, or dumping messageboard trolls in the pirhanna tank. Please feel free to proceed as you would in modertating any hot-button topic. (Personally I feel they sometimes aren't moderated heavily enough, such as the time when a certian country singer's #1 stalker shitted up the Pulse nightclub thread beyond all recognition.)

But it was. Imagine if he had written it in a way that wasn't sneering, insulting, and loaded to evoke an angry response -- we could have actually discussed his ideas instead of whether or not he should be boxed. I’ve been avoiding that thread (sorry) because of how deeply this situation is affecting me. Like for many, it’s not an academic debate or a theoretical analysis, but personally terrifying.

I do agree that we don’t need a “women's only zone”, per se, but it does get exhausting when the dominant voices on issues that primarily affect women become men and women are imposed upon to do the emotional labor to help men understand.

So this is my long winded way of saying that I don’t know the right course and that it’s hardly likely I’d participate in any thread right now dominated by men aggressively presenting their opinions. The utter lack of empathy for how horrible this is for many women, and the choice to jump in aggressively, is mind boggling,

His first post did. I've often wondered why matriarchal societies are the exception globally. I still don't buy his assertions that it's all down to baby making, but it was an interesting take. It ties into perspectives I've heard that repealing RvW is as much about those in power fearing there won't be a sufficient poor population to exploit as it is about controlling women and pandering to single issue voters.

Subsequent posts added significantly less, but the tenor of the whole conversation had gone rapidly downhill and it takes more than one person to make that happen.

I accept that I'm in the minority in enjoying talking to people who don't think exactly like I do. Ban away. We only need about 15 posters here, right?

I pointed out that I thought it was weird that the president who put two of the three women on the court's minority was somehow partly to blame for this hurricane of shit we're now in. I also pushed back on the idea that both parties are the same, that there's no difference among them on this issue, and said so.

Things started getting sideways, I guess, but I'm not completely responsible for that. If the thread rule is that only women are allowed to speak and men should just stay off the thread unless they're there to +1, okay, but I didn't know that was a thing.

He often seems to throw in some incendiary invective and he knee-jerks back (as if he is overly sensitive) when others throw insults at him. But over the last couple months, when I've seen posters angry at him in several threads, his positions on the merits of those threads seem to line up with most of the posters. I never quite figured out why there was the disconnect but as I guessed in sentence one: "I probably missed some early asahi stuff wherein he incurred some ire."

I say No Box.

As for AJH, while he might bring up interesting positions or points, he seems to only post in a manner to intentionally get people angry, which seems to be a type of trolling. And this time he did it in the raw, emotional, RvW thread. I might say that he could read the room better, but I think that was part of his thrill and apart of his condescension.

His boxing makes more sense to me, but I don't even use the ignore function. I rarely like boxing and like to see it for Dirty Spammers. So, I slightly lean No Box.

Should I have used "primo" and "secundo" to sound like Lounsie?

Here's the thing: if I'm so useless, and if I'm on ignore, why do you even care?

Is it because other posters don't have me on ignore? Maybe the find something of value in spite of the fact that maybe sometimes I wrote posts that piss people off?

I'm not trying to start wars with people - well, Alky might be the exception. I like starting shit with Alky. But other than that squirrel murdering, drunk asswipe who talks about going to the other side of the planet to kill someone (you all don't seem to have a problem with him 'cause he speaks your language, I reckon), I don't really set out to incite people.

I do harangue about the coming end of American democracy, in part to serve as a kind of bookmark that we can catalogue as it happens over a period of time. Call it a useless hobby of mine, lol. But I also remember when I had several pit threads created about me in 2015-16 because I was being "hyperbolic" (common theme here, I didn't start shit with them, but they started it with me, and then I gave it back). In any case, January 6th kinda rested that case, though that was the opening act. There's more to come.

You can look on the Dope and find quite a number of posts in which I unequivocally express horror at the anti-abortion movement. I didn't change my username. I also explain clearly what I think the end game is, and it's a nightmare that includes ending abortion but goes well beyond it.

Listen to the women for once. I'm glad to do it. As I also said, no lie, I never knew my dad's mother. She died of a botched abortion. I grew up in a household with a father who had a pathological hatred of religion. I didn't understand why until I became old enough to process such topics.

I will say what I want, and if the merits don't add up, I accept that. I'm already expecting to be boxed.
