Ideas for next Megapoll?
The current 2 are winding down. Does anyone have one nearly ready to go?
Have we done games? I was thinking a Megapoll for non-video games might be fun and worth running. Looks like that was done in 2017. Last edited by What Exit?; 24th April 2023 at 05:53 AM. |

Have we done best movie theme song? I'd be willing to run that.
Maybe a non-music one in between, though. |

Have we done Best Cover song?
Car models? Different criteria possible: ugliest, coolest ASF. |

There was one I was thinking of doing before the 90s poll started, but I don't remember what it was.

A 64 song mini-Megapoll for Frank Sinatra's best song. Suggested by Zeener.

Have we done sidekicks?
Examples for villains: Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter, The Witchking in Lord of the Rings, Kronk in the Emporer's new groove & Iago from Aladdin. Early Harley Quinn Examples for heroes: Ron Weasley, Samwise Gamgee, Bucky Barnes from Captain America, Robin, almost every Dean Martin character in a Rat Pack movie. Where the character is nearly as important as the "hero" like Hermione to Harry Potter, they should not qualify as a sidekick. |

Heroes, check. Villains, check. Sidekicks? Not done.
Should we limit it to fictional characters? Novels, plays, movies, TV. What about where the man character is THE sidekick? Take Gilligan, for example. |

Can't be the main character. So Gilligan out, plus is he the hero or the villain? For a show like F-Troop, I would think Corporal Agarn would count as a sidekick to Sgt O'Rourke. But do we need a third category where they sidekick is to neither a Hero nor a Villain? Should we just say no to sitcoms? |

It would be difficult to omit iconic sidekicks, like Norton (The Honeymooners) and Ethel (I Love Lucy).

Excellent counter-example. So maybe we do need a third category for neither Hero or Villain.

Start with submissions, see how many show up and take it from there.
We may need three separate megapolls. |

As the Cookie poll is on hold. I might run the Sinatra Movies as a filler mini-megapoll. It will be over fast and then if @Rat Diva is ready, she can launch.
While the mini-mega is happening I can take nominations. I'll start the thread either later today or Monday. |

All of Round 2 of the movie theme poll is live. Assuming I post every other day, it should be done at the beginning of July.
Maybe good timing for someone to start gathering nominations for the next? I like the sidekick idea... |

Hmmm, Sinatra Movies will be done shortly. I think I could do Side Kick.
I'll start a sidekick thread after knocking around the idea here a little longer. Is Rhoda a sidekick to Mary, on Mary Tyler Moore. They don't get up to hijinks the way Lucy and Ethel or Ralph & Norton do. I would say supporting characters like Rhoda or Phyllis aren't. Though when I think sidekicks I'm probably thinking Robin, Harley Quinn, Bucky to Capt America, Samwise to Frodo, Dr Watson to Sherlock more than sitcom ones. |

I think including sitcom sidekicks would be fun. Leaving out Bender (Futurama) just seems wrong. But you're right, being a sidekick is more than just a main character's friend, and I can't think of some clear way to define it other than "I know it when I see it."
Some requirement for getting up to hijinks is a good start. If it were me, I'd encourage that, and let the crowd decide through nominations and play-in votes. |

I can make arbitrary decisions on those that aren't clearly sidekicks and force them into a round 0 play-off.
So with Cheers, is anyone a sidekick? Cliff to Norm? Coach to Sam? I would probably force them into the play-off Over on Frasier, was Niles a sidekick? I would say no. George to Seinfeld? I think that does count. But Barney Rubble to Fred Flintstone, is a no brainer. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Criteria in the poll? Best, strongest/most powerful, most fun, most iconic. Am I missing anything. |

IMO: no one on Cheers is a sidekick. Neither is Niles.
George yes, Barney yes. Continuing with Seinfeld, Elaine is definitely not. Kramer is more debatable but I land on no. He's an entity by himself, not Jerry's partner the way George is. |

Sidekicks should not have adventures outside of their adventures with their associates, unless their adventures fall under the realm of being a sidekick. Sidekicks are allowed to act independent of their associates, but with the implied blessing/permission of their associates. Sidekicks can leave their sidekick position to do other things, but this should not count as "being a sidekick" during that time. They should be voted on their time filling in as a sidekick. Breaking News
Has anyone got a poll to run in the Penultimate forum? I'd like to wait until WE? gets his going before starting another. I have a suggestion, but I can hold off if someone else wants a crack at running one. @Rat Diva, perhaps?

Either works for me.
I'm not the person for the sidekicks poll. I'm just not a comic book guy. I'm a movie and sitcom guy. |

That's half the fun! Lots of dross in Round Zero/Round One, whilst we all argue on what constitutes "sidekickery."

I have a TV Show Theme megapoll ready to roll, unless anyone wants to take over the Sidekicks poll, or @Eristic Widgeon returns to run the XKCD poll.
I'm happy to hold off on mine, but if no one chimes in today, I'll kick off TV Themes tonight. (And to comment on @Rebo's suggestion above, classic commercials would be AWESOME!) |

Does anyone want to take a crack at running Best Sidekick megapoll? It's a terrific premise and is pretty much loaded and ready to roll. |
