I Don't Know The Grammatical Terminolgy For These, But.....

........ if a person sleeps a lot, could he be called "sack-religious" (as in "hit the sack")?

And if that same person has trouble motivating himself, could we say he has low "self-steam"?

Y'all's turn.

Those are 'modals', used when an activity is named for the primary action, like swimming or running. Run and Swim are verbs, but running and swimming are nouns.

Speaking of sack religious, the sound of snoring being depicted as sounding like sawing wood is why they call it slumber.

Modals? They're PUNS, hence the @Khampelf mention.

Dolt!

Q

Nah, that's when a word sounds like what it represents like slurp, slap or belch.

Saying slumber doesn't sound like snoring, much.

I guess I am the grammar guy, that is if I've been right on any of this.

If they are a turn of phrase that is accidental yet makes sense on some level, they're called eggcorns.

A cop I know was keeping a list of things people said in court.

One man claimed he had been caused "defecation of character", which I kind of like, because defamation of character is when someone is talking shit about you, right?
Another was explaining that the woman was not his legal wife, they were "co-hibernating".
And the guy who hit a phone pole with his car and was "ejaculated from his vehicle".

"A rash and a shit"!

This is exactly why I am in love with the English language!

I guess my Mom's saying "Salivation Army" would count as an eggcorn?

Thanks, Ludovic for teaching me something new today!

And Khampelf, you can be the grammar "go to guy",a s far as I'm concerned!
