I've got to go with pickle's description here. Although in some of the later episodes, the Shadow did take action. (How did he stay hidden while climbing a water tower anyhow?) So, Buffy.

Depends on which version of the Shadow, but I'm going with Maxwell Grant's, a character so hard core he makes Batman look like a wimp.

Buffy is great, but there would be no Buffy without the Shadow.

2) have sidekicks? Check
3) have a secret identity? Check
4) have super powers? Check
5) survive death? Check and double check
6) star in a comic book, a TV show and a movie? Check
7) fight a superpowered menace that traditional authorities cannot handle? Check
8) angst? That's a big old check.
9) crossover events? Check
10) motherfucking bad ass? Check

I made a shorter checklist earlier in this megapoll (probably on a Lone Ranger fight) and while I like yours, I think it is missing some elements. Also, I said that a superhero didn't need to hit all of the elements.

Superpowers, equipment, sidekick(s), training, vehicle, base. Probably: NOT a badguy. Probably: must be a Goodguy as in not neutral (why I voted against the Endless.)

Maybe I'll look for my list tomorrow.

Oh! And Buffy counts, but she often fails to try at her job, so this one is still open for me.

That's somewhat unfair. She spends a lot of time trying to be normal, and being the slayer makes her pretty unhappy for a good long while, but I don't think she ever half asses her slaying duties. She just spends a lot of time trying to figure out how to get someone else to take over without her having to die again.

I wrote that last post badly. I meant that you made a good argument for Buffy, so someone would have to come up with an equally good or better one for the Shadow for me to vote for him over her if I were the one breaking the tie.
