Ask the SDMB Mod

I'm not going to answer or give any info out about anything that has to do with mod secrets or things only mods should/would know....so if someone asks something like that, expect it to be ignored (or I'll just say "not gonna answer that").

But since this is not on the SDMB itself, I don't have a problem talking about posters I'm not fond of myself, think are assholes, biggest trolls, etc.

As a mod, you definitely see a different side of the SDMB, via reports. I've been doing the job almost seven years now and patterns emerge over time. You see things that most others wouldn't. You see, put simply, pretty much all of the drama. All of the trolling posts, the rule breaking, the assholes. Not every poster would catch things like that, but mods always see it because they're directed to it.

So...ask anything you can think of. Don't expect it all to be answered, as I've said, but I'll try to answer as much as I can.

I also started one on FB (and made it public, so anyone can see it or reply to it). It seems busier than this one. Up to you which to use.

Should we add [RIP] to this thread because you haven't posted in a few minutes so we can't verify if you're alive or not?

Seriously....if I was applying for another type of online job where I communicated with people, a community, or did some sort of customer service via online interactions...I just might.

Can we ask about previous posters, or mods thoughts on them? Like for example, how did Liberal get away with all of the shit he did, or why did it take so long for Cesario to get banned? (I can't remember how long you've been a mod, so excuse me if those were before your time)

Sure, but I can only offer my opinion on things and if I don't know an answer, I can't really offer a very good response, but feel free to ask about anything you want. I'll let you know if I don't feel okay with answering something, trust me.

When posters felt mods weren't policing threadshitting, and dealt with it themselves, did you usually side with the shitters or the shitee?

If a mod gets a report and takes no action on it, it's usually because the mod doesn't see the post as rule breaking or threadshitting or...whatever the case may be.

So if that happens; the poster instead taking the person to task, that poster will get modded for junior modding, more than likely.

Do you consider Shodan's "Regards" trolling? How about Snowboarder Bo's quarry thing?

"Regards" didn't bother me because I was familiar with its history. It was the standard closing for messages back when offices were connected by teletype. (Amateur radio operators use "73", which basically means the same thing.) But when some Raffers started saying that they found it annoying, Shodan doubled down and make it known he would keep using that archaic signoff in spite of, and even because of, the complaints. So it became a bit trollish.

I can't speak to the other one.

I've learned to tune out Shodan's regards, but doorhinge's "post shortened" is still obnoxious. Yes, we know it's shortened. You know how? We all read the original post, and observed that your quote had fewer words in it.

I vaguely recall a Dope mod (Chronos, I think) saying that he personally considered Bo's quarry phrase trolling, but there wasn't a consensus so he gets a pass.

I don't think that the "Regards"/sign off is trolling. Signing off your posts is something a lot of people do, most out of habit from the old Google groups or writing primarily in only emails early in the internet days. I'm willing to give him a pass.

I'm more annoyed with the quarry stuff and I do think he does it just because he can...and only keeps it up as a five year old will hold one finger away from their brother's face and go "whatttt? I'm not touching yyouuuuuu seeeee?". Technically not breaking any rules, but still pressing it and being fucking annoying.
But as someone said that Chronos said...one mods opinion doesn't a decision make. If it were up to me alone, I might tell him to stop it, but it's not....and really, I don't think it's that huge of an issue to get mad over anyway. Very small on the "list of things to be annoyed by".

I think so, yes.

As for the Mince account, it was just plain ol' detective work done with a mod CP.

I'm guessing yes, since most of them are on my FB friends list and see my posts regularly (as they reply to them regularly) and I make a lot of statuses talking about the addiction.

I'm not sure what 100 dollars you're referring to. If you mean the one about the 30 Day Song Challenge that I started years ago...no, because I stopped doing it shortly after starting and clearly said to everyone participating in it that I wasn't continuing it due to money being tight at the time, so I didn't owe anything.

Someone else took over posting the daily challenges, though, which isn't on me.

If you mean something else, though, then you'll have to remind me.

Actually, you just stopped with no explanation. When somebody started making new threads you gave them your blessing, still insisting the prize was on the line. When the guys taking over got to the end you said you couldn't pay at the moment, but would be able to in a few months. I'm unsurprised you never followed through. Like your tenure at the Death Pool, it was an all around shitshow.

The question was post 30. Post 31 was the answer: "no", but with a lot of self-excusing bullshit around the circumstances. Post 32 just was a record that you're not fooling anyone with your false history.

My answer was how I remembered it. It still stands. It wasn't false.
Now, it's been proven wrong. My bad. But you say you're "unsurprised", so I really don't know why you bothered to ask it in the first place other than to try to make some kind of point against me, much like posting under an obviously fake account that you don't use regularly (since your question to me was only your second post on it), my guess is because you don't want me to know who you are.

So, ...forgive me if I don't put much weight in any observances or opinions you have.

Now if you have another question...let me know.

There's no concrete proof Mince and Beckdawrek are the same person. There was, however, concrete proof that Mince was socking.

He was a little before my time (as mod), so I don't really know. I would have argued for his banning immediately had I been one at the time.

Hey Idle: Why don't you guys move threads any more? They just get closed.

The Shagnasty thread should have been moved to the Pit, not closed. The idea is to increase posting and just shutting the thread stops posting*
