Are we all just posting trivia to see if/when posting becomes impossible and the SDMB returns a 404 error? I mostly lurk, and did so for years before something compelled me to sign up and post, so I'll really miss this place!

Anybody have any suggestions on what we might do, where we might meet, or how we might salvage some of the tattered remains of this community should that bleak day arrive? I mean, I couldn't host a replacement Board, but I'm sure somebody can. If that becomes the only alternative, how might it happen and how could it be communicated?

Maybe someone should tell him about GB in that ATMB thread. Poor fellow appears on the verge of a breakdown.

Personally, I think the scenario of Dopers moving en masse to another board isn't likely. Without the history, the Cecil mythology, and the "fighting ignorance" bromide, it just wouldn't be the same. Sure, a small subset of the most devoted derpers might move, but I think most of them would say "it's over" and walk away.

I kind of doubt that Mello could take the influx. It is on life support only at this point. There is nearly no staff. My bet is someone will start a new board in the next month and hope to carry on the Doper way. I bet here will see at least an uptick though in posting.

I edited it, I am not sure if i would accurately refer to it as a joke. More a cynical statement highlighting what we see in the boards and in real life. I don't recall, how about the TSA thread- call anyone subhuman for serious remarks about how the poster should have spoken up when she was mortified and almost in tears when she was catcalled?

If they can get advance notice and enough of the staff to make it feel somewhat continuous, it would be pretty simple and relatively cheap to set up an SDMB clone. It makes more sense to do that than to try to recreate what they had on another board. The SDMB is a pretty distinct culture and a lot of the people who want to keep it going are not going to be happy on a different board.

I’d honestly be happy to help them configure it to basically look exactly like the old one, if they wanted. It’s not at all hard.

Regarding the end of the Dope, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of the traffic move over to a variety of Facebook groups. I belong to another that’s in message board hospice waiting to die. While never as big as the dope, it had a draw to get new members, and a “known” leader/ owner. Like the dope it had splinter boards, snark boards, an owner who made stupid rules and mods & admins with god complexes. It’s users are similar ages to dopers too. The board and its splinters were already losing long time members to some various FB groups, when the owner died. He transferred ownership right before his death to one of the worst mods, and within weeks the place turned into a ghost town except for a few very specific sub forums. Everyone else, including long lost or banned members migrated to the FB groups. Which reminded everyone minus the stupid rules why we all enjoyed 15-20 year friendships and flame wars.

Well that’s my prediction.

As far as the Dope apocalypse goes, I figure there's about a week at least. If they are shutting it down, I assume it's happening next week at least after the holiday. So if you want to reach out to favourite posters to migrate here, now is the time. I kinda doubt this place will hold a majority of dopers though. They mostly like the stricter though sometimes nebulous rules. I don't mean it as an insult when I say, this place planet s kind of like a plague had wiped out the SDMB except for IMHO and MPSIMS, leading to those forums evolving and filling the other niches.
