I am about the same age as this asshole, and I am also one of the oldest people in a workplace of over 900 workers. If I started volunteering to walk "young women" to their cars in the dark, I don't think that it would go over well. But SA lives on a different planet. |

I'll grant you that it's twee. But it's not durpism, so I get a reprieve.

Do frantic attempts at raising money ever point towards anything but doom? I think we need a pool for predicting the demise of the SDMB. I give it six months.

What's funny is STM is about as doctrinaire left-wing as you can get without going full Trotsky. The "owner" was the president of the union over there and the ownership group is the union bigwigs and for all I know the union itself. An STM exec would read one of TomnDebb's "I won't moderate hate speech because I don't know what it is" posts exactly once and decide that maybe s/he needed a moderator who did know. The whole being a racist or misogynist or transphobe is OK as long as you don't insult an individual user crap would end that very day.

Milk is not free.
However, buying a cow requires you also buy land that's zoned for livestock, the cow, a barn, fencing, water trough, a salt block, a milking stool and a bucket. |

I'm a woman, and I've walked people to their cars, helped them carry stuff, don't swear in front of people I don't know, or people I know who aren't as blue as I tend to be. I hold doors for people of all ages and ability levels, men and women, and thank anyone who does me a kindness without expecting anything in return BECAUSE WE LEARNED ABOUT MANNERS AND COMMON COURTESY WAY BACK IN KINDERGARDEN! What pisses me off about chest-thumpers like Starvie is the assumption that because of my womanyness I am by default afraid to go out alone at night, or that I can't carry heavy objects, or that rough language is indelicate and therefore inappropriate for me to use. When I walk with my cane I get men (never women) trying to "help" me across the street and stuff and a few of them have gotten downright nasty when I refuse their "help." Because, I am woman (sometimes with cane) therefore I lack common sense and have no idea of my limitations and must be steered gently through this big, scary world by a MAN. Starvie and his ilk pine for the days when women had to submit to their manly manfulness thanks to societal pressure and they can't get it through their hard little heads (I leave guessing which head I mean as an exercise to the reader) that most women are actually pretty capable and strong and self-assured. |

He forgot the bit about everybody in the room giving him a standing ovation. And he's so proud of himself for having instigated helplessness among these innocent young women. If he's not there to walk them to their cars they fucking faint. This thing was made up of whole cloth. He sits there in his office creepily thinking how he'd love to be the kind of person who walks deserving young women--probably the better looking ones because of course old hags don't need protection--to their cars, and maybe they'd give him a little peck on the cheek as a thank-you, but I bet he'd never do it because somewhere inside him he realizes they'd think he was creepy. |

In Starvieland, "woman in the army" means that she was a secretary whose role was to look pretty and smile demurely as her superior officer
Such a lady would never dream of sullying her long red nails, high heels, impeccable hairdo, and stylish, snug-fitting uniform by engaging in fisticuffs or crass gun-shootery or raising her voice like the mannerless slattens they're allowing into the armed services these days, so any ideas she has of defending herself are just more of those cute little fantasies dames still have sometimes. |

I stopped engaging with him a while back, partly because there's no hope of changing his mind, but mainly because he clearly LOVES the attention. He's thrilled whenever he can turn a Dope thread into The Starvey Show and drop his little asides about how he has much more to say but has important stuff to do and will be back later. |

All this says that Ed stayed on too long, and once things moved online he rapidly was left behind. A reasonable analysis would be he rode Cecil gig into the ground, a reboot was needed at least 15 yrs ago, if not 20. Last edited by Someone; 21st August 2018 at 02:06 PM. |

I can't quite articulate what bugs me about this post. Is it the royal third person? Yes, in part, but it's the pompous self importance in the whole thing. No one is priding themselves on anything, hopefully not in GD, which is mostly people shouting slogans at each other while trying to stay on one side of the rules. The dope is a motley collection of trolls, lunatics, dorks and other dysfunctional people, and I include myself. People are there to kill time and be amused. Chance really wants to see them as a group of Oxford dons. I think that's why he won't mod anything that isn't a bright line rules violation. This is why he has such a hard time modding trollish bad faith arguments. I mean the Gweeb isn't much different from the dope in the nature of its members, but at least it's honest about what it is. Well, at least his throat problems have cleared up. And Tom seems to have long lost his whistle. So those are improvements. |
