Could be worse, friend of mine had her house hit by a small E0 tornado yesterday. Right in NE Portland! Downed a bigass tree across the street (that smooshed a van belonging to her girlfriend's work crew but juuuuust missed the GF's car) and took down some of the gutters on the house. Crazy fucking weather! We just got some thunder over here, just enough to put Shoga into a panic that lasted just long enough to seamlessly transition into the firework panic after dark. I'm so ready to kill people over all this noise and disruption! Guess I'd get into trouble if I just randomly started firing a shotgun down the street every time they set one off, right? Feh.

Shooting randomly down the street is irresponsible. Take time to aim.

Holy crap I had a lot more burnable stuff around the shack than I thought. I spent the last two afternoons stuffing branches into a pickup and hauling about half a ton to the dump. Then cleaned out the gutters and watered the compost pile. Now I'm ready for the slackjaws of summer. Last year we had a carload of kids put on quite a show in front of the neighbor's place. Then they swept up the street nicely and bolted.

The cops around here have no chance at reining them in. People have a text message relay going. You can tell when there is a cop in the neighborhood because things get quiet. And you can tell the minute he moves on. Bad Motor Puddy is chill, and I don't care as long as they don't burn down my damn house.

Anyway, I'm heading out to my uncle's place for the 4th. It kind of didn't happen last year because my aunt's husband had just passed away. This year it will be a much smaller group, just family and spouses. I'm showing up half a day early to help move stuff and staying half a day after to clean up the shrapnel. It'll be nice to see the fam again.

Were back from camping in time to watch the idjits try to get to the community center fireworks by driving down our dead end street. Why they won’t put up a “no outlet” sign is beyond me. It’s an annual safety hazard (but nowhere near as bad as stormie’s).

I say in time, except we came home around 3:30. Spent half an hour of the intervening time at the store, another half hour cooking dinner, and prior to both of those, about 2.5 hrs trying to get Husband’s truck out of the mud he wedged it in before giving up and shelling out for a tow truck.

Took the neizphews to the water park today. It was fun. Mrs. Larsen and I spent the bulk of the time in the big wave pool. The waves were just big enough to be fun, without being so big that you could get hurt.

Saw something. A number of young women had their phone in waterproof bags and were goofing with them in the wave pool. I like my phone too, but that's just ridiculous.

Afterwards got take out pizza from the NY style place and am planning on going to bed early, I'm really pooped.

Sounds like a great day, Wolf!

Marlo Update!

Marlo and Twig had a long nose sniff that didn't involve hissing! Twig's so sweet and gentle, but she has no concept of personal space and kept running right up to Marlo who would hiss. She wasn't afraid, but more like, "Geez! Get out of my face!" Twig would then look so sad. But today, Twig went up to Marlo slowly and voila, no hissing. Then they hung out on the floor about two feet away from each other.

Marlo's settling down. She's also getting stronger and isn't so rickety. I can brush and pet her and get a little resistance. I tipped her over a few times last week! She'd been stuck in that kennel for about three weeks and had no muscles. I still wish she'd eat more*, however, either I'm getting used to all the bones or she's gained a little weight. I don't want her to gain a lot since she has arthritis, but at least enough to fill in a little between her ribs. Her fur is looking much better, too. She gets a "bath" with kitty wipes every day and gets brushed several times, as well. She loves them both. She had so much fur coming out the first few days. It's like she completely gave up at the shelter.

Overall, we've made a ton of progress since she came here nine days ago. She's certainly brightened my life. She's sassy and funny. She even plays with the laser toy.

I also got roped into doing some scheduling work at the shelter. I get trained on it next Saturday since my "boss" is on vacation until then. She kept dropping hints so I finally said, "Oh, all right!!" LOL. I guess I've made a decent impression.

* I'm also not thrilled with WHAT she's eating. She'll eat the wet food for kidney kitties at night, about a third of can, but the only thing she'll eat during the day is Temptations treats (aka junk food). Sigh. That she eats at all is the most important thing, but I sure wish it were something a little more healthy. I've tried mixing them with healthier foods, but she picks them out. Oh, well, she's sure happy about them. Maybe they'll take a little time off her kidneys, but QOL is important, too!

Oh yay, they're getting along, that's wonderful! Have you considered giving her (and Twig too) only wet food? My guys are doing splendidly on it, The Captain has lost some weight he definitely needed to lose and his yearly test shows his diabeetus is being well controlled between his diet and insulin and Terri kitteh is maintaining good weight as well and both are more energetic after more than a year off the dry food. It costs me a bit more to feed them this way, along with it being a huge PITA to feed them basically three times a day but if it makes them healthier that's worth the trouble and expense.

I scored some Trazadone off a friend and dosed the fuck outta Shoga tonight and my goodness it makes so much difference! She's taking the noise, if not actually in stride, at least with a decent level of equanimity and my floor is not awash in saliva. This makes me very happy. Better living through chemistry, my friends!

We had NSTO over again for the day and I got him a fielder's glove and a couple baseballs since he's been wanting to learn how to catch and my daughter is wicked good at it. I can actually throw again, not well or far but I'm actually pitching properly which makes me ever so happy. We went to his piano lesson and stopped at the grocery store to make poor food choices for dinner. I vetoed pizza and donuts and made it clear that while I'll go along with "poor" choices, that does not mean I'll sign off on "disastrous" ones. He ended up with chikin nuggets, fries, mixed raw veggies (including trying cauliflower and fennel for the first time, he's a bit of a picky eater) and blueberries so not so terrible as all that. I had sushi, nom. He went the whole day without ANY screen time, which is a major feat so my daughter and I are high fiving ourselves that we're helping wean the child off his video game habit. Go us!

Now I'm really tired but can't really settle to sleeping in spite of a couple of mega phatty bowls shared with the ASIL. Nice day, very nice.

Today the Earth has completed its outbound leg from its closest approach to the sun and is starting the inbound journey. At 3pm PDT today, the Earth will make a pylon turn around an empty point in space and start the long fall towards the sun. You should not notice any disturbances during the turn.

I have consulted with the head of Gravatic Systems and he has assured me that all equipment is in tip top working order and should give complete satisfaction for the next half year.

That is all.

That's a bit much to call a one point five percent eccentricity a pylon turn.

And we're getting more and more circular for the next twenty thousand years or so. Then we'll start working toward a spring fall eccentricity. Plus orbital precession.

Yes, but the times will be highly variable, with a few dying immediately, a few taking over a hundred years, and the vast majority dying some time between those extremes.

Strategic deployment of trazadone (dog) and valium (me) probably prevented not a few asshole boom enthusiasts from departing this vale of tears prematurely last night. I tried to go next door to socialize with the fam and neighbors but it was just too much for me and I had to retreat to my white noise cave, where I snuggled on the couch under my bankie and did some online retail therapy. I sure hope I still like what I ordered because I was definitely doped to the gills. Valium and weed will do that to a person!

One good thing about living up in the high and dry. They take their fireworks violations very serious here. Only heard a couple of boomers.

I was amazed at how many fireworks we had last night. Serious urban warfare before it was even dark. We set off the safe and sane fireworks we bought last year because they were a novelty. and I didn't want them staring at me from the shelf another year, but just wow, my neighbors have some serious black market connections. I'm lucky in that my dogs have never been scared of fireworks before, but last night it was "Game Over" for the big dog and he found a safe place in the bedroom to ride it out.

Boy am I glad I hauled off all the dead branches before the neighbor's 20-something kid got to them. The dumb fuck is a member of the Future Felons of America and seriously not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Apparently he decided to put on a show for the folks, and now there's a three foot wide pile of burned out fireworks in their front yard. Just from the driveway I spotted three rockets in my yard and I haven't even walked around yet. The dipshit has been arrested so many times he's on a first name basis with the local cops and yet still he's the poster child. It might be time for some enhanced interpersonal communication.

Aside from that, the gathering at uncle's place was a good time. It was great to see the gang again and get caught up. We sat around the firepit and roasted hot dogs and watched the fireworks out over the bay. There was a bit of a dark cloud because unc just got an estimate for the cost to clean all the creosote out of the chimney and apparently it was a double yelper. But OTOH it hasn't been done in 80 years. Even so he's not exactly rolling in dough and it's going to leave a mark. All I could do was be sympathetic and keep my trap shut. Aside from that it was quite a nice little holiday.

I have to admit, the period leading up to the 4th, and even the 4th wasn't as bad as in years past. Don't get me wrong, the 4th was still pretty boomy. Brandi wasn't freaked the entire day, but around 5:00 the big stuff started going off and then it was hours of freak mode. Poor girl! My poor thighs! She kept trying to crawl all over the tops my legs and then sat there and stress panted all over me.

I was out of calming stuff and all I had left was doggy painkiller meds. I gave her one, in hopes it would make her sleepy, but it didn't. I'm glad the 4th is done and over, though.

I have errands to run today, but that is the extent of my plans.

I'm glad the kitties are calming down around each other, Helena.

I'm glad your dumbass neighbor didn't burn down your house, Jag.

The 4th was nice, low key, middle son and GF came over, so it was five of us, Mrs. White made her salads which are awesome, Germen potato salad, seven layer veggie salad, guacamole, burgers and dogs on the grill, then out to watch a local fireworks show over the Mohawk River, it was fun and relaxing...

This has been the coldest 4th weekend I remember here. It was 65 when I woke up this morning and it hasn't warmed up. I'm going for a bike ride and think I might need to bring a jacket.

Had multiple bouts of hail and rain last night. Mrs. Larsen and I went over to Mickey D's and got the stroopwaffel McFlury (highly recommended if you like caramel) and watched the lightning out to the East.

I planned for and made this weekend a five day weekend, so I'm currently reading the news and drinking coffee here in the comfort of my den.

I finally went and purchased a new cell phone for myself. I ended up going with the OnePlus 7 Pro. It has some definite heft to it, but I like it. This thing is beautiful and functions beautifully too. However, I decided to go with a lease option, for now. I'm basically testing this phone and if I decide I don't like it, I'll take it back in and try the Google Pixel 3aXL. By leasing this phone, at least at first, I'm not out a big bunch of cash, like I would have been by paying up front. Additionally, my old phone is a Samsung S4, so everything new is bound to look amazing, so I want to see if the stars in my eyes remain a month later. I got the Nebula blue, which is really pretty. My old phone was your basic black.

This phone wasn't super cheap, but it wasn't as expensive as the Samsung S10 or S10+.

After buying the phone, I stopped at Wally World (it was right there) to see if I could find a decent Fiskar's compound pole pruner. No dice, but I did end up buying a couple of odds and ends there.

Yesterday, I just kind of hung around the house, but today I may go and get a pedicure. I want to fuel up the Jeep too, so I don't have to worry about it the rest of this week.

It's back to reality for me. The week off was much needed, but I find I am still in a foul mood. Usually I come back refreshed and ready to tackle things. I think I'm disengaged.

In more positive news, the custom-milled siding for the back section of the house is safely on my porch awaiting priming. I'm not looking forward to putting it up, but I am looking forward to having that side of the house put back in proper order. Not only did we move windows around, but the gutters had been installed improperly and several boards were water damaged.

I think it's the time of year, winter sucks so bad in upstate NY that when it does get nice, it's hard to work...I remember one of the first business trips I took to Orange County, CA, back in the mid '80s when printed circuit board shops were all over California, it was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky, I remarked to the engineer, "Man, I don't know how you get any work done", he shrugged his shoulders and said, "It's like this every day", it's not like that for us here, so this morning as I drove to work with sun shining, the sky blue and the warm summer breeze, the only thing I could think about was how much I'd rather stay home and work in the garden...

When we bought our current house, one of the bedrooms had last belonged to a teenaged boy. It took a solid three years for the Axe to dissipate.

Trash Day can dawn cool and clear with a hint of the warmth to come here in Parallel Hell. We're already past the longest day of the year, so each day is a little shorter now. But it will be warm and dry for months, so this will slow the fungi down in their growth as they don't like the dry.

Today is recycleables and the rule is no #3 plastic, so I had to sort through the bin to remove those. In spite of that, the bin is absolutely full, we got rid of a lot of stuff.

I have consulted with the head of Gravatic Systems and he has assured me that all equipment is in tip top working order and should give complete satisfaction for the next half year.
The Earth is moving around the sun at a whopping 67,000 miles per hour or thereabouts; I'm surprised I'm not dizzier than I already am. That's way more than the speed of sound — is that why I have to turn on the speaker to hear anyone on my phone?

The Earth is also moving at about 1000 miles per hour around its axis. At Noon, these velocities subtract so we're moving at a more leisurely 66,000 mph net. At midnight they add, for a 68,000 mph total. Is that why we're set up to sleep at night?

When I jump in the air why don't I land several feet away? I've never understood that.

Because the ground is sneaky and slides along with you. I'm surprised you don't hear it giggling.

I live in a Jagnocentric universe. The ground doesn't move until I wiggle my hind feet and make it move.

Quiet in here!

I been busy--Wednesday was a whirlwind with the grandkid, we hit a neat Reuse art show out at Edgefield in the morning and I acquired a hilarious sparkly purple snail sculpture made of welded this and that and the kid picked out a very nice shaped rebar fire poker for his auntie's birthday prezzie. Then we had to haul ass out to make his piano lesson with another stop in the middle but everything got done with actual minutes to spare. Yeah, I had to do some exceeding of speed limits/laws of space and time to do it but that's a Wednesday for ya.

I have the glass bird/butterfly bath arriving today that I acquired while shopping under the influence on the fourth and I'm going to revamp a small area where I have a weeping mulberry in a big pot--needs to be levelled some and the pedestal it's on reworked then I'll install the silly snail and the bath by it with all the flowers in the background, should come out nicely.

And I have to hit somewhere for a length of 1x6 in a decent wood because my coat/purse/everything rack finally pulled the drywall anchors outta the wall from all the weight. So I need to put it back mounted on a board and screw it into the studs with deck screws, that'll larn it to obey gravity!

And also, the calendar and FB tell me it's Rigs' birthday, so Hippie Birfsday to @eleanorigby !
