Remember 2016 when the Republicans refused to even consider Obama's pick for the court because it was "too close to the election"?

The Dems had better hope Mitch McConnell still has a tiny shred of dignity in his shriveled little soul, but I wouldn't put any money on it.

ETA: Should we make this thread for the political ramifications and have the other one be a memorial? Or should they be merged?
Paging @hajario, @Giraffe, @Rebo, @Fenris - What say you?

Is it possible to laugh, cry and vomit at the same time?

I'll admit, my first reaction was "she couldn't have held on for two more months?!?!"

i never imagined that the death of a supreme court justice could leave me so depressed. And so deeply sad.

Annus Horribilis .

McConnell is a soulless, party before country whore. Never expect decency from him and you’ll never be disappointed.

My understanding is that, since the Democrats only have 47 senators, the Republicans could ram some complete shithead through without any problems. However, if they do, and if the Democrats take the White House and the Senate in November, Biden could increase the number of seats on the court to 15 and pack it out with liberal judges. Hopefully that threat will keep McConnell from taking advantage of the situation. He may be dishonourable, but he’s not totally stupid.

Oh, he's already said he intends for the Senate to choose a successor.
