chappacula wants to know what the TA in ETA, as in "edited to add" means, even though he answers his own question in the first sentence of his OP.

Excuse me, there's a big difference. I went along to a new restaurant once, Tentacles'R'Us, precisely because I know what's what in cephalopod cuisine.

It went like this: The waiter comes up to me with his pad poised and says "Are you ready to order?" and I give him a  and say "Yes". So the dialogue goes like this:

"Octopus or squid?" -- "Squid, please"
"Farmed or wild?" -- "Wild please" (aside: premium price but much better flavour)
"Green or purple?" -- "Green please" (aside: there is some fancy book-l'arnin' word but nobody uses it in the trade, and he could already tell I was no ignoramus)
"Smooth-lipped or hairy?" -- "Hairy please" (aside: you don't actually eat the lip in either case but there is a discernible difference between the two sub-species to the educated palate, and talking about the hairiness of the lip is just a convenient shorthand)

So he says "Right, we'll just get one of those out of the tank for you and chef will cook it up", and off he goes. I'm surprised a few minutes later to see him heading on over with a martinus (yes, just the one) and a couple of little bowls of snacks, and he says "I must apologise, sir, there will be a slight delay; you see, the sous-chef who actually kills the squid has called in sick, and Jervaise, he's a bit temperamental, he says he will cook you a dead squid any way you want it, but he can't possibly handle a live one. But the plongeur who starts his shift in half an hour, he's a tough German guy called Hans and I'm sure he'll be fine, and in the meantime perhaps you will accept a little amuse-bouche with the house's compliments?"

Now there are some who would object to having their food handled by a mere pot-washer, but the thought doesn't bother me in the slightest, and I carry on enjoying the snacks and the martinus and reading the back-numbers of the New Yorker the restaurant has about the place, until eventually the waiter comes back with a very sorrowful expression on his face.

"Sir, I cannot possibly apologise enough for wasting your time," he begins, "but perhaps this voucher for a complimentary meal at a future date to suit your convenience will help to make amends. I must report, sadly, that fresh-killed squid is not on the menu tonight. I had such hopes of Hans, but when it came down to it, when he picked up the squid out of the tank and saw its large, liquid, trusting eyes gazing at him, he dropped the knife he was holding and burst into tears, and said 'I cannot do this bloody thing' in such tones as would wring the heart of Satan himself. I am so sorry, but you know how it is."

"I do," I agreed, accepting the coupon and filing it in my wallet. "I know... how Hans that does dishes can be soft as Jervaise with wild green hairy-lipped squid."

(Context for non-Brits, about 0:50)

BigT has put me on mute!

Apparently when he criticizes someone, it's just a reasonable exercise of his posting privileges, but when I weigh in on exactly the same issue and explain why he's wrong, it must be some sort of personal vendetta.

Alas! That onion you are eating is someone else's water lily.

I like that scarf. Assuming it's not chiffon, I would wear it. Note that when worn, the design doesn't really show, only the colors. Because it's knotted and looped, see.

Also, he did say early in his OP that he had "lost track" of his Hermes scarf. I assume that means he only has had one. Poor dear.

At first I thought this was lame snark since not everyone would know who Andy Kim was, but then it seems that she thought everyone thought the two Kims were the same person

That would be a plus. I like the colors because I like brightly colored objects but mainly those that give at least a squinting acknowledgement of minimalism like what Target used to sell like 10-20 years ago. If I didn't have to see the fish then it might be an acceptable scarf.

Not to drag the snark thread into unacceptable depths of architecture again, but yes, I do like Le Corbusiers Unite D'Habitations for that reason.

I did, too. He couldn't afford therapy, which is ridiculous and tragic. Those were the words and actions of a person in quite a lot of pain and it was hard to read.

In the big picture he did what it took to beat the obsession, and provided a little light snark along the way.

You recognize someone in insurrection pics. Do you ID them?

I've been in protests. If they turned ugly, would I be personally responsible for any consequent harm?

IIRC, he had another circumstance where a friend was holding onto some of his stuff, and left a tub out in the rain, causing a bunch of stuff to get moldy...I'm pretty sure it included ties that were also Hermes or some other pricey brand.

I meant that asahi thinks this stuff was a deliberate, planned conspiracy involving the whole administration, and not mob violence incited by an enabled lunatic. Sorry if I was unclear. It's been a shitty week and I don't mean to inflame discussion of this.
I think it's pretty clear that said incitement of mob violence was a deliberate, planned conspiracy, albeit very poorly planned. Clearly it didn't involve the entire administration, or even most of it. But as I've said, I'm amazed by how many GOP politicians turned out to NOT actually be fascists, but just to be incredibly slow to recognize what they were enabling. I'm glad that, for instance, Mitch McConnell didn't support the effort to overthrow the government. But, based on his past record, I don't think that suspecting he was likely to do so was particularly paranoid.

Hari_Seldon insults the OP of a thread he’s closing as he’s handing out a warning, and an ATMB thread gets opened about it. No word from any mod on the board - I’m guessing it’s in the mod loop, trying to decide if Hari’s pushed past a few lines in the sand, and he’s on his way out.

As a candidate, he may have seemed just fine. In practice, and I say this as the moderator of an occasionally contentious board myself, he's awful. I believe his heart is in the right place, but moderating is not about indulging your personal views.

At first I hoped a few ATMB threads protesting his less-than-well-thought-out decisions might help him to improve, but I no longer feel optimistic about that. He needs to graciously resign.

ETA: And it sucks that Beck is in the hospital. I wish her well with all the heart that I leave out of my moderating work.

Sometimes people just aren't cut out for it even though they are good posters and seem level headed. twickster was an extreme example of that. I don't think anyone expected one of the worst moderators in message board history. I'd be willing to give Hari a little more rope.
