Artemus Gordon



Ross Martin originated the role of Artemus Gordon; Kevin Kline played the character in the 1999 theatrical remake. Most critics panned the movie but remarked that Kline's Gordon stayed pretty much true to the original. Robert Conrad praised his portrayal (Ross Martin died in 1981) while slamming Will Smith and the production company for the direction they took.


Waylon Smithers



Originally appearing as a black man, Simpsons exec producer Jay Kogen explained that at first it was an early mistake by the color stylist. But they considered Waylon "was gay and black. Later we decided it was too much, so we just kept him gay."

That's a fun picture of the Smitherses. We're going back so far that I don't entirely trust my memory, but as I recall I don't remember ever thinking of Smithers as being Black and considered him to have his own cartoon-world pigmentation like the characters in Doug.
