Snow and sleet, wind blowing like crazy. Luckily we have power and food. I worked from home today and can tomorrow if I have to.

Mom said that in West Tennessee, the snow prediction has been changed to rain, so she can keep her hair appointment tomorrow (this is important for her, since she isn't physically capable of even shampooing her own hair anymore). They got off easy this time.
I may not be happy when hurricane season comes, but right now it's good to live in Miami. |

We've been opening our faucets just a wee tad, but that didn't stop something bad from happening. We have water, and it's running from faucets and into one of the toilets in the house, but the other toilet = empty tank. BOOO. We're heating up the room, and put warm water in the tank. I hope to hell that pipe doesn't burst.

Yikes!
Weather Channel is now calling this a Snow-caine for Chicago. ![]() It's pretty funky out there right now. Lightning, thunder, winds up to 70mph, snow blowing everywhere.... 60,000 in NW Indiana w/o power. I hope they're ok. |

I did, eventually, make it home. The place I work has an official stance against working from home (because we're a hospital and half the employees can't work from home), but my direct boss has a more realistic stance---e.g., why require 100% of our employees to drive in, when we can ask 20% to work from home?
At any rate, my house is leaking water from 6 places now, and one spot on the ceiling looks dangerous. Not a drip but a dinner-plate-sized wet spot in the ceiling. Not good. Last edited by MissJeanLouise; 1st February 2011 at 11:40 PM. Reason: 'cuz |

Power outages all over Houston. No power here at work. I'm hoping the lights are on at home for my dad. They were off, and came back on again, per a neighbor. Hubby says we are having rolling brownouts.

We got slammed. About 14" of snow on the ground, w/ ice underneath from the sleet that came down first. At least the wind died down some. It was a pure bitch getting home last night, and my commute amounts to a few blocks.
An official alert was issued, advising people to stay off the roads other than serious emergencies. My city set up shelters w/ cots for workers who got stuck and couldn't get home. So the idiot who runs my board (a tinpot Stalin) decided that it was imperative to keep the library open, including branches. The friggin' malls closed, you couldn't see more than a few car lengths for the wind-whipped snow and there we were, all set to respond to pressing library emergencies. The twit finally decided to close us but not until early evening. It took the bigger part of an hour to just get staffers' cars unstuck from the parking lot. I have no idea how or how many of them managed to get home w/o having to call for tows along the way. The power flickered a few times last night but didn't go off entirely. It's way below zero w/ windchill out there now so I'm very happily safe at home and reading my way down through a stack of books. |

Holee-crap! We got some snow! And it's still coming down!
Winds have died down but the snowfall is heavier now than it was last night. Internet and cable is out. At least the power is still on. This storm will be one for the books. |

Revised measurement for snowfall: 16.7" and still coming down. It's too cold for the salt and ice melt to work either, oh joy. Crap. Nothing will be moving very far until the weekend at the earliest. There's just too much snow to move.

Yeah, at this point I wonder if the schools will be open for tomorrow. I went for a walkabout, and we got hammered. Five-foot snow drifts all over the place, cars are buried, roads are impassable. Sweet!
This is definitely the worst I've seen in the Chicago area and I'm loving every minute of it. ![]() Does anyone know if Jim Cantore survived? ![]() |

We were cloudy all day and got some rain late last night/early this morning, but it only dipped below freezing for a couple hours overnight. The rain appears to have whittled away at the piles from last week's snow a little bit.

It looks like we got 10-12" of snow and sleet. The county is under a Level 2 warning so we technically can be on the roads, but almost no one is actually out there. The winds have died down and we are getting light snow now but apparently the winds are supposed to pick back up today, so the fluffy stuff we got on top of the sleet will blow all over again.
I don't know if my office is open but I'm staying home. |

Final report from the Queen of the Plains: five or six inches of well-drifted snow, temp 4, wind dying down. About as bad as it gets here, but pretty tame compared to what a lot of you are getting. Here's hoping you all can just toss another meteorologist on the fire and keep cozy.

I'm not sure I'm going to be able to get out of my parking lot to get to work tonight. My friends are baffled that I don't just call in ("You only have two days left! Why are you working them??") and while the idea is tempting I can't do it. Damn my work ethic, anyway.

Mmmmm this sandwich tastes really good. |

Biiiig pile-a snow in our backyard, where The Dog Goes - so big we could hardly get the door open, so Captain Spaulding shoveled a path. We're under a Level 1 Snow Mergency, and have been since sometime last night, which means that it's illegal for non-essential people to be on the road if it's not an emergency.
So I'm staying in. Whee. Lots of snow. Lots lots lots. So I'm working from home today, and sitting here in my jammies. My flannel jammies with red & green digital reindeer on them. I mean, really, why get dressed just to sit around the house? There's chili cookin in the crockpot, I have gouda and shredded cheddar in the fridge, and I have another tray of cheese in the freezer. I'm set. |

Stopped snowing here around 1130. I went out and started to dig out--not shovel. Am in for a lunch break. School robocalled: closed again tomorrow.
The snow is 23" on the driveway (which is almost 200 ft long). I have miles to go before I sleep. I don't own a snowblower. The sun is shining fiercely now--it's truly gorgeous outside: about 23 and clear with a mild occasional breeze. There are snowmobiles out and little all terrain vehicles towing kids on toboggans: it's fun. But the snow is now heavy; what is called "heart attack snow". I have done a little less than half my drive and have managed to dig out the garbage and recycle bins. #2 son is out clearing the pathway to the porch, the side deck steps and a path for the mailman. I do feel a sense of urgency about this, despite my fatigue. Not only do I have to go to work tomorrow, the bitter cold is supposed to hit once the sun goes down. Plus, if I can get a car sized path dug, the sun will (and is) melting the residual snow on the asphalt, so there will be minimal ice. I am giving myself about 20 more minutes to recover, than out I go. The worst is done, but there is still a lot to do... |

Still sunny and 50 here. Depending on whether the snow currently in West-By-God comes straight here or rolls up the mountains we may get something tonight, but the forecast is just for it to cool off.

We own a snowblower, but 24" of snow was asking too much of it last winter. The only one in the neighborhood worth its salt was our neighbor's across the street. He rents industrial equipment to contractors for a living. HIS snowblower took care of the whole neighborhood when everyone else's crapped out.
Good luck out there. |

My snow guys haven't showed up yet--I'm sure they're half-dead from exhaustion by now--so my garage is still drifted shut. I got the doors to the house cleared. The easy part was opening the door and having a snow drift collapse onto the floor. The hard part was working back from the collapse part to even have a place to pitch the snow outside.
It's colder'n hell out there too. Tossed together some rosemary focaccia, excavated some good olives and cheese from the fridge and popped a bottle of pinot noir. Ah! Snowbound life is good. What the hell. There might be time to wedge a nap into my schedule for the afternoon. |

I had about a little less than a 1/3 to go when a neighbor down the way walked by with his dog. He offered his snowblower--blessed be good neighbors! I don't know if his is especially big or heavy, but my god, it was like trying to manage an unruly horse. He stayed and helped me, so my driveway is now cleared (a one car width path, that is). I got the wheelie bins to the curb and parked my car down near the street.
I am half dead from fatigue. Luckily I made a huge shrimp/pasta thing for lunch, so #2 son and I are going to have that for dinner as well. He cleared the side deck (and dug out the kitchen door), the stairs, the walkway to the porch and the porch steps (the snow there was almost 4 ft) and the 2 paths that lead to the driveway. I did the driveway. I think I have earned my brownie today. Clouding up a tad here and the temp is dropping. No more snow predicted, though. This same neighbor who came to help me, his wife (also my friend) got some bad news: at 0500 her mother died in a nursing home in Iowa. She had end stage Alzheimer's. AFAIK, I-80 is still closed, though. |

We here in our corner of the High Plains have escaped the devastating snowfall, but the bitter cold has touched a lot of people, and not in a nice way. As I previously chronicled, both my BIL and I have suffered frozen plumbing around our water wells or pressure tanks; today our MIL got chased out of her 100+ year-old house by minor flooding after a pipe froze under the laundry room (she's staying with us tonight, the plumber comes out tomorrow.) Plumbers, furnace folk, and car-starters are swamped with calls.
