Thank you for your replies. I agree that the best advice and critisisms come from your loved ones, but remember you have an online persona that you seem to cherish enough to defend. That's where listening to those you respect online comes in handy. We're not all Spiderman in muu-muus; that's just poor luck. Some are.

We've all been snarked on. You don't have to leap into the defense of every false thing. You can listen, accept it as true and silently change, mature, and learn from it (or even confess to the people you do respect, admit you fight realize you were coming across a certain way, and leave it at that); or reject it outright, roll your eyes, laugh at the fat ass Spiderman, and get on with your day.

I'm not saying you do any of those things, as I mentioned, I barely know you. But don't let snark keep you away from here. We all face down that barrel sooner or later.

Don't we have a snark rota around here somewhere? I could swear we made up a schedule a while back.

I were. Younger, stupider, and nicer, but that was me.

Now I'm older, even stupider, and meaner.

I like that in a person.

Una, don't worry about apologizing. This place is like a litter of golden retriever puppies biting each other's ears, with little actual malice. Just call us all cunts and be done with it. And post more.

I realized after posting that, that I have no recollection of anything you posted, I merely recognized the name--hey, that's GOOD for me!

Yes, Una--tell us to fuck off and then post pics of kittens. It's all good.

Yeah, I don't even think I can snark on the Cecil thing coming from Una (or anyone else interacting with the actual writers of the column). I mean, for all the fuck I know it's a useful shorthand for "whoever collectively is writing the column this week" even if right now that's practically speaking "Ed Zotti, by himself, with no editor"

I live with a man named Cecil. I caught a metric shit ton of flack, for his name and nothing else, from people who hadn't met him.

What a prissy, horrible way to judge anyone. Adopting the name Cecil may be weird in your eyes, but hey, there are men named Marion and Beverly (or Kaden, like my nephew) out there too. Snark or no snark, it's a random name some random parents chose, unlike an internet handle.

Someone should tell that preying mantis that still being stuck as a student when you're past 30 years old can't be called a "career".

In the villages of Namibia, learning is considered a life-long process with many phases. Until the age of 18, knowledge-seekers are known as un'baak'kraa and are cherished as the future of the people and learn life skills such as stripping the leaves of the kula'ambaa tree which is used both as a weaving fiber and a staple food. Young adults of the village between 18-29 are advanced learners known as kraalam'cha and focus on skills needed for raising a family to make the village strong. Those over the age of 30 are highly-regarded as orm'lambaa and devote their time to studying spiritual and philosophical aspects of life such as the god of the harvest Gumba'laa and the godess of the rain Chu'baktraa. We have much to learn from them.

I had an Uncle Shirley. I've noticed that a lot of men born in the early 20th century tended to have names that today would normally only be considered women's names.

And you can end the search there. Or you can look further, and find 10 more studies which say "well, it depends" or "yeah, up to 4 cups", or even "no, for the love of God, no!" I contend, my friend, that this has significant value still.
I know you said you were done with this, but I feel I have to say something that no one else brought up. For most people, "Cecil" isn't any more reliable than the other links that can be found on Google, so in the end he isn't of any more value than anywhere else.

Should also tell her that living in "a rat infested flop house in a room with no door in a bad part of town" (re: thread about rent being raised 4% OP by someone else) is also probably one of those loose ends.

There's a guy who owns a bunch of properties in town whose first name is Leslie. Once one of the property code guys had to write a letter to him and began "Dear Ms. Lastname:" The guy was not pleased

I've also known a male Gail and Tracy, and my friend Ashley (female) was named after Ashley (male) from Gone with the Wind.

ETA at Mothedrine, because you know someone's gonna do it: I'm not mistaken. And don't call me Shirley.

Meredith
Caroll
Beverly
Laurie as a nickname for Laurence
Leslie
Tracy
Shirley
Dale

All of these used to be exclusively male names. There are lots more, but these are off the top of my head.

Is that snark? I can never tell.

At the last place I worked, there were three men named Tracy. I've met both men and women named Shannon.

My name is Robin which is a fairly common male name in the UK and I think somewhat less than rare down south (although I can't be sure). Supposedly it was first coined by Queen Elizabeth for one of her pages. It was derived from Robert as a diminutive and is now regarded as a unisex name.

My husband's name is very close to one rigby mentioned, my former boss's brother was a Marion, and I went through Grade 8 and all of high school with the most obnoxious bully ever named Gayle. He preferred to be called 'Butch.'

If I'm remembering correctly from her DC thread on how her neighbor is a racist, she doesn't live in a particularly bad part of DC. I think she lives in a group house, but row houses in her neighborhood run about $500,000 and up.

Really? People are crying (supposedly) over a fucking horse? At least a dog or a cat can, ya know, come in the house and maybe sleep with you but a horse? What, you're in love with it because it just never bothered to step on you or something?

Agreed but completely beside the point. It's a fucking HORSE. It outweighs a human 3 or 4 to one (well, maybe not Lynn) at least. How the hell is that a beloved pet? It makes no sense at all to me.

I wasn't judging anyone I was judging the name given to a fictional entity. My reaction to a real person bearing that name -- or any name I dislike -- is different.

Incidentally I'd no idea anyone considered it to be a woman's name. I've never met/heard of a woman called Cecil.
