Glad to see that I'm not the only one that noticed their little ass-to-ass routine. Frankly Ibn Warraq is way more of a nuisance than Finn. Finn will mostly troll the ME or Jewish threads, Warraq will troll ALL the Great Debates threads, and will insult in almost everyone of his posts (as surprising as it may sound, Finn doesnt do that). While calling for Mod intervention at the slightest comeback over his permanent insults (I just read the thread that Peremensoe posted above, on the Munich massacre, it is almost a caricature of why Ibn Warraq is such an annoying ass).

I stepped away from this discussion for a few days and reflected upon it, to assess whether I was unraveling a wee bit myself, over an issue about which I feel quite passionate. Here are some points to summarize what it is that I conclude:

-I feel strongly about this topic, and language is very powerful. I appreciate respectful discourse marked by I-messages and assertiveness versus personal attacks and aggressive namecalling. Strawman arguements are a turn off, as are pile ons.
-State is not trait. Making fun of someone with alopecia is not the same as making fun of Britney Spears for shaving her head. As for defending "junkies"? I have, before, and that wasn't a path I wanted to go down either...I work with addictions and I don't like that language any better. Again, state is not trait.
-Hyperbole is fine, though I feel saying so upfront may have diffused some of my confusion. I am not saying everyone has to pre-emptively explain themselves, but in my opinion it's an issue of being respectful and aware that this is a public forum and you don't know your audience. You just don't.
-Finally, I tried to create some hyperbole of my own...just to see if it is still funny. What would people here think if I said:
"This summer's temps made me hotter than a Jew in an Auchwitz oven!"
Or
"My feet hurt more than a barefoot knocked-up pickaninny outrunning...!"
Or
"This place is more dangerous than a bunch of Spics at a..."
We have had discussions here about language and personal attacks--what makes A's statement diferent? That she didn't say her comment at someone? Guin was upset by the use of tranny for Eve at The Dope...DragonLady was called an attention whore in a conversation about her incarcerated ex...and of course, clothahump did his thing...how is any of that more serious than what it was that I reacted to? Again, language is powerful. If I made a comment like this hyperbole at work, I could be reprimanded or even fired for creating a hostile work environment. If I said it was "just a joke" it wouldn't matter. I know this isn't work and I know this is snark. But I still believe that there's funny and then there's gauche.

I fail to see the humor here, and y'all can call me whatever you want. At the end of the day, Aleq and I are both of a certain cultural ranking--we have white privilege and I believe that with that comes a sense of power and the ability to not only recognize, but influence social change. What she does with her smarts is on her, and I will be me. I never said/am saying she has to change...just speaking from my own thoughts and feelings.

This is both inane and insane, if you keep saying to half of the posters that their posts are soaked in stupidity, ingnorance, or hypocrisy post after post, you are insulting them. And you certainly dont have any room to scream murder when a tiny dose of your own venom gets thrown back at you.

As I used to go in GD mainly for ME threads, I noticed newcomer early on.
