I'll join y'all on that one--ever since Rod Hull and his Emu were a thing I've always affected an Oz accent when saying "emu" and now after forty years I can't help it!
![]() ![]() There are plenty more on YouTube, definitely find the one where the emu goes after Johnny Carson, it's wonderful! ETA: Just rewatched it and by gum, Johnny does say EEEMOOO! ![]() Oh man, here it is: ![]() ![]() Well, Operation Fix The Leak is a qualified success--after much rasping off of caked on paint I got the compression fitting on and squared away and went next door to enlist the neighbor lady's aid in being the one to turn the water on (and more importantly OFF!) at the street. She wasn't in but the mail carrier was coming by and volunteered to help so I handed him the street key, went in and hollered for him to hit it. And immediately to shut it back off because the bits I repaired seem fine but there's another shutoff valve that used to go to the sink that cut loose. I think these will be easy enough, two more compression fittings to acquire, the nice neighbor to cut the pipes then we'll try again. Not today though, not until the new year, dammit, I'm tired of this shit! She's fine with that, she's a great neighbor. I think she values me because I don't throw a fit about all the hammering and odd noises and the forge going for hours, which can smell a bit odd. Oh, and while I was in the crapshack I heard some rustling, turns out some shitbird of a rodent had made a very large nest behind a box and while they were there had essayed an experiment of chewing on the cord to the freezer. Got some of the outside insulation off, doesn't look like they got the inside wires but the chewed bit was all up inside a bunch of dry leaves they'd dragged in so it's fortunate that nothing caught on fucking fire. Good gods. So I wrapped it up real good with electrician's tape (yes, I DO keep a huge supply of basically every kind of tape in the crapshack--high temp duct tape, Gorilla tape, masking tape, electrician's tape, teflon tape--if it's tapelike I probably have a million yards of it) and have added "replacement extension cord" to my Home Despot shopping list. I'm also gonna put down more bait around the place, fuckers are getting much too at home in there. Home ownership, SO much fun! Last edited by SmartAleq; 30th December 2022 at 01:16 PM. |

![]() ETA, you snuck in Smartie, our house is held together by tape too. Very useful stuff but annoying when needed. Good luck with it all. I’m expecting to be talking to plumbers next week myself (nobody works this week in oz if they can help it or charge squillions). I’d forgotten about Rod Hulls, funny fella though why a Brit adopted an Aussie bird and we had a beloved Ossie Ostrich does boggle a bit Last edited by thylacine; 30th December 2022 at 01:23 PM. |

A Seattle friend took me by an emu farm while I was there and we spent the next ten years planning ways to release and smuggle them home. It would be one of my fondest life memories if I didn’t hear her bloody well say eemoo every email.
I'd say from the behavior of that real emu in your link, thylacine, that old Rod had it just right. What other bird is THAT insane--well, aside from the cassowary and that would be a much more difficult puppet to get right, what with the weird hammer head and all. Oz has the craziest critters, I swear.

Since Minnesota legalized THC edibles the wife and I have, on occasion, imbibed. It isn't a huge effect (normally), just maybe chills you out and helps you sleep. But last night for whatever reason I was tripping balls. My wife said she didn't feel anything. It was a new brand for us so I think maybe it is poorly mixed and I got the lucky gummy.
Something like that happened to me once, my friend and I had a sugarcube with acid dripped on it so we dissolved it in orange juice and she drank half then I drank the rest. About an hour or so later it was very clear she had NOT dissolved the sugarcube all that well because I was halfway to the moon and she was waving her hand in front of her face acting disappointed. It was an interesting day.
. You learn early that if an emu wants your sanga (sandwich) just hand it over. As for us having weird critters it could be worse, the ancients could have been correct about our backwards feet. I don’t think any of us mammals are actually antipodean.
One day my usual dose of THC oil sent me flying, very disappointed to not replicate it since. I always shake the bottle and make sure there’s some fat in my system for anything not absorbed sublingually. Some days the brain just goes “hell yeah” I think. I usually only notice the lack of headache and vape to feel a little chilled. |

Apparently I can't read or something. I did not mean to neglect either Smartie or Helena.
Plumbing ills (since my pipes burst last winter and it took me 8 months to get them and the bathroom fully fixed) are my #2 nightmare after losing heat in bitter cold, so I feel for you. Glad it's improving, and you have a very nice mailman! Helena, I don't have much to say. I respect you not wanting to discuss things; I might respond the same way, if and when I'm faced with such a thing (as we all will be). But I am here to listen, as are so many in this never ending thread. The grief and rage and fear must be overwhelming at times. Yet (and I hope this does not sound facile because it's not) I hope you can still find moments of joy and laughter and even just noting the sheer cussedness of life. “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” —Helen Keller |
Helena, I don't know what exactly is ailing you, but even without knowing, I know for a fact you're incredibly strong, and that will never change, unlike most things. Everything stays, yet it still changes in little ways. I hope that soon, you'll be able to reach peace. It's what everyone who loves you would want for you, that much I know. You didn't ask for this, you didn't ask for it to surround you and yours. They know that, too. It'll be okay.

Team e-mew here.
Helena, it's always so good to see you! You haven't been a passenger (in spirit) in my car for a couple of weeks, because I haven't driven in that time...but I've thought of you just the same. Sorry to hear about the chewy bastard, Smartie! We have a repeat winter resident, but he doesn't appear to chew. He or she is a weasel, and I'm sure I've described before how we found him halfway in our living room--through a small hole in the floor--a few months after we moved in here. We replaced the entire floor, so that took care of the hole, but the weasel definitely still lives with us every winter. I can hear him moving around just two or three feet away from my favourite chair. And when it snows, we can see the trail that the weasel's tail makes, as it slides up against the side of the house and then enters...somewhere...mysteriously. In eight years, Mr. Duck has not been able to figure out how it's getting in. Me, I don't care. I never hear it chewing! I just hear it moving furniture. (That's what it sounds like; I hear things like, Thunk. Whop. Thud.) And now for some whining. I'm sick of being sick! But the fact that I feel good enough to whine about it is progress. I believe I'm finally getting better, because one of my most bothersome covid symptoms has just started to abate. I've had painful sores on the inside of my mouth for about a week (covid mouth instead of covid tongue; apparently it's a thing), and I can tell, this morning, that they're finally starting to heal. And my heart rate, which has been hovering on being unacceptably low, is coming back up. Both the Mr. and I still got strong positives when we tested this morning, but things are looking up. I think. Happy New Year's Eve! Much love to you all. Hey, I'm not able to post emojis right now--if I try, I get a Forbidden Error type notice. Just imagine a little heart here, please. Throw in an imaginary smiley face, too, for good measure! |
If it didn't smell or leave little weasel-y turds around, I think I'd like a weasel in the house. It'd keep mice and rats from being an issue, and as you say, they don't chew things. Don't know about it clunking and banging in the walls at night, though.
Someone gifted me with a big basket of fruit 'n' stuff for Christmas. It contained a hand of six large bananas, which is three times more than we eat in a month. So I put them in the fridge, and just now I rid myself of three of them by stirring up a batch of banana walnut bread. It's crammed with walnuts (I use more than the recipe calls for) and raisins flavored with rum. I also sprinkled finely chopped walnuts and coarse raw sugar on top before putting it in the oven. It's raining at the moment, and it rained steadily all night long too. It's just what we need. Our reservoirs are starting to refill a bit and the thirsty ground is drinking it up. Long may it continue! |

Good morning and Happy New Year to all of you.
Helena, I think of you often. I know you prefer to keep it private, but I don't think I'm all that far from you, and if you ever need something, all you need to do is let me know. smartie, I'm glad the plumbing is starting to sort itself out. duckie, I'm so glad you are starting to feel better. wolfie, I'm sorry that the wife's condition isn't improving. Mr. taters has been suffering from some god-awful respiratory thing too. It's not COVID; we tested him. There isn't much going on in my little corner of the world. I don't have any plans for New Year's Eve other than sitting on my couch. This has been a crazy month, and I'm just tired. |

I've decided I'm not up to doing much for tonight--I re-upped Shoga's scrip for downers to try to keep her calm when Terror Night starts but there's very little rain in the forecast so the noisy buttholes are likely to make us all mental. Kosh went with me to the vet to pick up the meds and was such a good boy--the place was a bit of a madhouse when we walked in so I sat down next to an old couple. The man was blind and he asked about Kosh so I steered the dog in toward him to say hi and they had a nice time bonding with some polite face licks thrown in. They brought out their little dog who yapped at Kosh (who just gave him his usual "WTF dude?" look in return) then the little one slipped his collar and had to be corralled by the vet staff since the woman uses a walker and wasn't up to chasing the little bugger around. After they left the staff told me the man is usually in a terrible mood and yells at everyone and this was the first time he was being chill--I credit Kosh for that, he's a pretty soothing dog overall.
I have all the necessary to make a very good lamb stew tomorrow though, aside from some crusty bread I can pick up fresh in the morning. Tonight I think I'll just nosh a bit--I have tortilla chips and avocado to make guacamole and some sleazy cheez dip so that will do just fine. I also splashed out a bit at Grocery Outlet which has an unexpectedly copious stock of interesting ciders and I got a six pack of a blueberry cider that looks interesting. Today I am going to firmly resist any and all puttering impulses in favor of watching trash tv while working on a project. I'm going to Do My Yoga before I eat dinner and in general see this muxed up year out on a positive and productive note. Imagine a series of hug emoji with hearts here for Mrs Wolf and Peeky and Helena and Senpai and everyone else who's dealing with bullshit--I do so love you all! |

The boom booms started very early, hours before sunset. Such distress from all the local canines. I usually go out with leads early New Years Day but me trying to save a scared dog got my partner badly bitten (after I’d handed it over to the owner who lost control) and I can’t ask her to put up with me collecting and holding scared ones until their people are found. She has valid fears (and the coolest scar). Given fireworks have been illegal here for decades I quite like the stories of drunken adult firework related injuries. Blow your dicks off!
Crows are hanging around for the pickings of backyard fruit trees and the other things that come for them. 2 mornings this week I have found my front porch has been used as a dining table and the meal has contained blood and guts. Lovely. There is more than one really annoying form of covid. Wally (cat) is pretty keen to get out the front door after watching these overnight feasts. I bet he’d just be the next one. I finished 2022 with a V02 Max of 35 putting me in the top 25% for 57 year old women and my Garmin gives me a fitness age of 42. My lungs were supposed to stop more than a decade ago. It makes me laugh but then I cough…. At 42 I probably had the fitness of a 90yo. ![]() ETA just wanted to see if I could add an emoji Last edited by thylacine; 31st December 2022 at 11:45 AM. |

I'll be spending some time with my friend and her family for New Year's tonight! I am still very tired and spent overall, but I love her to death, and I would much rather sit and talk with a close friend than sit alone in my dogless house with nothing to do! She has cerebral palsy, and due to Covid can't really risk going to a totally packed place for a New Year's party, but I'm just happy to liven up the party with food and laughs! I'm sure she'll do the same for me. She's so wicked cool. She has a college degree and does amazing things! She's the sweetest person you'd ever hope to meet, not a single malicious or judgmental bone in her body. I'm not much for sports, but she is the largest Memphis Grizzlies superfan, and I have grown to really enjoy watching Grizz games with her when I'm over and there's a game on. If all sports fans acted as my friend did, and not totally gross, I'd be into sports more I think! ;D
I'll have to gush more about how amazing she is later. It almost feels like saying 'Happy New Year' is an insensitive thing, due to the past year and how much it's seemed to deliver just pure and utter horseshit directly into our mouths via baby-food spoon. "Here comes the airplane, fuckwad!" Cooed the universe. Despite this, there were times where the universe decided to at the very least, mix in some delicious mushed pears in there as well. Here's to another year of surprise mushed pears, folks! May we even be treated to some Cheerios in 2023! ![]() |

Happy new beer! It sounds like the neighborhood slackjaws are getting an early start on the percussions this year.
I've been having phone follies. I foolishly attempted to upgrade phones, switch carriers, and port my old number, all at once on New Years Eve. Hey, Midori Ito landed the triple axel! Unfortunately Boost Mobile is turning out to be a complete fustercluck and may end up driving me back to one of the majors. OK so I have to deal with the devil. But does it have to feel so dirty? While I was at it I finally bought myself a new wireless keyboard & mouse. The last one croaked awhile ago and I've been dealing with cords. Now I can floop and surf properly, in a beanbag like god intended. Today and tomorrow apparently the sky is broken and there's no water falling out of it. But it looks like they'll have it fixed by Monday and we'll be back to normal. Meanwhile I grabbed the chance for a nice stroll after sundown. Cygnus the swan was setting as Orion the hunter rose in the east. Supposedly all the planets are visible in the sky tonight, but the bright moon washed out all but Venus. Hopefully I might even intercept a little sunshine tomorrow. We'll see. But for tonight the bills are paid and the pantry is full and I've got a bottle of scotch so I'm all set to usher in the new year. |
So I bought a two pack of bacon wrapped pork tenderloins at Costco. And roasted one of them. And I liked it, but Mrs. Larsen was not a fan. So I put the other in the freezer. And this morning it hit me that since she isn't eating much right now, I could roast the other one today quite easily. So it's thawing at the moment. I'll make some rice to go with it.

I just went out to take the trash out and when I came back in I had to stop for a second and just enjoy how good my house smells right now. The stew is in the Instant Pot doing its thing, a cherry pie is cooling on the shelf and when I went down to pick up a loaf of French bread it was still hot enough to sting your hands. Seems like such a shame it's all here just for little old me lol. I even went a bit overboard thawing out the lamb chunk and I have a couple of meal sized hunks left in the fridge I can throw on the grill in a couple days if I get tired of stew. (Pro-tip: I won't!) Well, begin as you mean to go on and I can't think of a better way to invite abundance than with a whole lot of delicious foods.

I spent yesterday indulging in pure sloth, often in that twilight zone between actual sleep and being awake. It was really needed because I've just been exhausted and unable to catch up on any rest.
Today will consist of the usual Sunday chores, plus taking down Christmas for reals this time. I also started the year out the right way by purchasing my Discover Pass for Washington state-managed lands and will purchase my America the Beautiful Pass the next time I'm at work because I can buy those passes in the lobby of my building. We've been eating prime rib soup since Friday night, so I think we'll eat something else for dinner today. I love my soup, but it's time to stick the remainder in the freezer and save it for a rainy day. I hope the wife is feeling better, Wolfie. I need to call the vet today to get more meds for Polar's skin infection. They called Saturday evening, but I missed the call. He doesn't have an MRSA-type infection so we can continue with antibiotics. I'll have to get more because the vet only supplied me with enough to get through a little over a week, and he'll need to be on them for longer than a week. I took Polar in last week to see what the infection was all about, and ended up doing a full blood panel, etc. Very expensive visit, but worth it for my good boy. Speaking of chores, I should get started. I hope you all have a good day. |
Happy new year, you guys!
Wolf, I hope Mrs. Larsen continues to improve. This is my first day "back to work", but I'm still testing positive for COVID so I'm working from home. At least I'm lucky enough to be able to do that. And I felt well enough to spend an hour outside yesterday--in nice, spring-like temperatures--taking down all of our Christmas decorations, so that feels like an accomplishment. I'm trying to appreciate the small things. (I miss smiley faces so much!) |
Good morning, everyone.
I'm glad you are starting to feel better, Duckie! I'm glad Mrs. Larsen is feeling better, too, and continues to improve. I also have to get back to work today, but fortunately, I'll get to work from home. My one office day for this week was a holiday, and I don't have to make up holidays. I did get Christmas taken down yesterday, along with doing the laundry. It was a bit strange not coming downstairs to the glow of the village on the "snow." But I am glad to have that chore out of the way. Wrestling the tree into the bag and then sticking it in the "way back" of the front hall closet is a chore, especially when one bangs her head on the low part of the closet. I saw stars for a moment. Well, I should grab my yogurt, water, and snacks for Polar and head upstairs to work. I don't really want to, but bills to pay, mouths to feed, etc. I hope you all have a good day. |
Poking my head in to wish everyone a good 2023, or as good as can reasonably be expected. Sending you all vibes for peace in all circumstances!
Our holiday was good and my break was long. I had visions of getting so much stuff done with my free time, because getting stuff done is my happy place, but my brain decided to embrace the way of the sloth and let go of the drive to complete things that were not holiday-related. I hosted my folks for Christmas eve. We had a lovely time and will be eating ham until it comes out our ears*. We wrapped in time to attend midnight mass, which wasn't that much of a trial because we were all used to staying up way too late over break. I just had to make sure to alternate wine with coffee during the party so as to be sober enough to pull off a solo rendition of "O Holy Night." I love that song, but it's not the easiest to sing properly. Christmas morning was full of presents and good food and cozy-ness, followed by dinner and visiting with MIL. SIL and BIL were unable to join the festivities as they were both ill, her with some unspecified malady and him with a prolonged stomach virus. Nephew, baby, and baby momma did come and fortunately didn't bring germs with them (as evidenced by our continued health, knock on wood). The week following was full of leftovers, late mornings, and lazy days. MD chose Indian for her birthday dinner as she'd been craving lamb biriyani for weeks. For NYE we ate snacks and watched "Dr. Strange." "Superhero" is the one category of family friendly movies that isn't too saccharine or boring. I did actually have to set an alarm on NYD to get up and cover two masses for our organist, as he'd scheduled me to fill in several weeks prior. I came home, made brunch, then made stuffed cabbages and a mountain of mashed potatoes and had the grandparents and guncles over to celebrate birthdays. I got Eldest an ice cream cake from her first place of employment. MD requested a spice cake, so I found a recipe for a three-layer gingerbread cake with maple bourbon icing. The icing was a keeper, the cake was okay. I'd probably do spice cake from a mix were I to make it again. Cake mixes are always so much lighter. Yesterday was mostly morose at the prospect of a return to normal life. "Mostly" because Eldest still has a week off school (but will work every day, except she got today's shift covered as it's her actual bday; she has requested sushi for dinner), and because too much family togetherness makes people snippy. It became obvious that it's time for people to go back to their respective occupations. (before I clobber them) *Husband's work sent him home with a 17.5lb semi-boneless ham, which is a. lot. of. ham. |

I’m so relieved you and Mrs Larson are feeling better Duckie.
Our car has been borrowed by one of my step sons, supposedly for a couple of weeks. I suspect we’ll never see the beast again. She hasn’t been driven for a while as Partner’s vision has deteriorated significantly of late, she needs an operation but COViD keeps getting in the way, hospitals are struggling and she has one ok eye so isn’t as urgent as she would have been considered pre pandemic. I’m trying to teach her the carless life but she is having a lot of trouble stepping off buses with no depth perception. Trains are fine though and she can cab and Uber etc which I generally can’t due to fragrances. Those little trees are poison to me. It is interesting though, I have never driven and I pack bags very differently for a day out etc. I’ve never really thought about it before. If rain isn’t predicted no umbrella in the bottom. Is water required en route or can a bottle be carried empty to be filled at destination if needed at all? Never use a trolley in the supermarket, if you use a basket you know when you have too much to carry home. Lunches out are easier to get home from than dinners etc etc ETA, carless was careless, how pedestrian Last edited by thylacine; 3rd January 2023 at 01:13 PM. |

Okay, so round #44,378 in the Great Plumbing Disaster is a qualified success. Got the two pipes cut off in jig time and had a nice run through Home Despot with Kosh, who's getting really good at it, heeling nicely and staying out of everyone's way. Got the fittings put on and tightened down then had the neighbor lady try the valve. First try got some spray/dribble from one of the two lower fittings so I had her shut it off, tightened things down and applied more teflon tape to the thread on the caps. Tried it again and those two held fine BUT the upper one in what used to be the kitchen BLEW off and shot the nipple and cap somewhere I can't find it, whee! So yes, things keep failing BUT they're failing smaller and in ways I can manage--just need to get more oomphy with the pipe wrench and pliers and more teflon tape. On the plus side, during the times before the blowout I didn't hear any OTHER horrifying water running noises so I'm cautiously optimistic that nothing bigger than what I've already identified has cut loose. I hope. Also, if there were a closer to the main blown out spot for the water to exit it wouldn't go all the way up to the top end with that much pressure, right? RIGHT? SO MUCH FUN.

Just popping in to relate that there is a thunderstorm happening in northern IL in January right now.
![]() Also, I heard tell of some vandalism to the exterior mailbox outside of one of our local post offices (time of occurrence unknown), but I mailed my Comcast bill there 12/26/22 and it hasn't posted yet. ![]() Any suggestions as to how I can track or fix this? There may be nothing I can do... Glad tidings indeed re Duckie and Mrs Wolf! |

Here if your payment record is clean they’ll forgive a late payment without penalty if you are nice on the phone and explain when you get your reminder notice. If they are likely to just cut you off of course it won’t work but maybe give it a little longer to get through with the late greeting cards?

Good morning.
Cloudy here with expected rain, but it will be a moderate weather day compared to others across the nation. Rigs, I log onto my Xfinity account and pay on the site. Paying via the bank is a PITA and doesn't post on the same day. Just a thought... Today is my daughter's 33rd birthday. When I started "talking" to some of you via the MMP, she was just a little girl. Time flies. I hope the plumbing will be all sorted soonest, so you don't have to keep crawling under the house, Smartie. Another work day looms, and I have to work on Friday, which will feel strange because I haven't worked on a Friday since October/November. I hope you all have a pleasant day. |
Okay then--got the headlight bulbs replaced on Agnes, only one was burned out but if one goes the other ain't far behind so I find it's best to just do them at once. Also has the advantage of letting you know you have an electrical issue if one blows out way sooner than the other, that's good info to have.
Since that went well I did another round of plumbing fun and right now it's down to just a couple intermittent drips in two spots so I'm letting it think about things for a while before I start cranking on it again. My arms are tired anyway. Still haven't tried turning on the one outlet I'm allowing to stay on in there, I'll give that a test in a bit. Nothing's spurting and the water meter ain't spinning out of control so that's a Good Sign. Fingers crossed y'all, and I'll be checking it obsessively for the next couple days until I'm sure it's right and tight. If everything holds, I'll have fixed things for just under a hunnert bucks, can't kick too hard about THAT. |
