Ow. I took a tumble off the porch today, tried stepping down with a laundry basket, rolled my ankle and hit pretty hard. Landed on the laundry for the most part, but my knee smacked on a stepping stone and my whole right side is really sore. I did go pretty limp and tried to roll with it, but the paver caught me by surprise. So yeah, ow. I'm okay, just disinclined to get off the couch right now.

Ow, ow, ow, Smarty! Rest and ice and Advil.

Took train to The Morgue again. Morning commute was miraculous and speedy. Way home got stuck and missed my 0520 train by 3 minutes, but that happens when I take the train at the Happy Place, too.

Almost all my daffodils are in bloom. The magnolia is superb this year. One more day of work, then CAPE COD… for more hard work there, but at least a break from work-work.

No NSAIDs, warfarin. Did rest, knee is sore but not too badly swollen, I hit right on the top of the kneecap where it's pretty strong and didn't displace anything. My foot hurts where the strap of my flip flop got caught and wrenched my instep, my shoulder and ribs are sore and my neck has a crick in it. I fell on my good side so nothing that's already fucked up got more fuckededer uppededer. This is gonna hurt in the morning, though, I can tell. Of course I have a job interview so I'll certainly be at my best.

Eh, I get it or I don't, no big stress either way. It's a six month temp job that looks mindless and non-customer service oriented which suits me right down to the ground.

Smartie, stop that! I'm glad you're not hurt badly, but sore still isn't good.

The girl is finally getting her new haircut and color today. She was supposed to have it done a few weeks ago, but it was on the day she had her stomach virus. She's going for a bob with red highlights instead of her usual blonde. She's quite excited!

I have a doctor's appointment close enough to noon to bring lunch back with me, and I'll do laundry in the afternoon, but that's all that's on the agenda.

Thanks, guys! Not quite as bad this morning as I expected and a looooooong hot shower certainly helped. Now I'm caffeinating and contemplating the lovely drive over to NoPo in traffic. Yuck. I will take the back streets, screw the freeways.

Back streets are good--I swear by them here. Good luck, Smartie!

The haircut is happening now--shoulder blades to above shoulders. I'm sitting in the waiting area watching from a distance. I'll probably be a thoughtful mom and grab her a tea at Starbucks next door shortly, but this sitting thing is kind of nice!

Best thing about haircuts like that is how different it feels, I bet she spends the next week just noticing how it swings more, playing with barrettes and headbands, etc.

And oh, Miss Carolia! I'm going to be in your neck of the woods next month, I'd love to find out where these food truck thingies are you talk about. We don't have any near me, sadly.

I'm glad to hear the fallout from the fall wasn't too bad Smartie. Hope the new job news is good.

My mom went ker-splat yesterday, missed the top step of the flight of deck stairs and came down hard on both knees. Sent me a properly gruesome cell phone picture of the damage, but swears she's alright; just bruised and skinned up. My dad had surgery on his arm last week and she's taking care of him, it's times like this I hate that they moved 250 miles away.

They announced a shift reduction at work Monday, approx 850 production people are losing their jobs. No word yet on what's going to happen with us skilled trades. I know that with my 21 years with the company I'll have a position somewhere, doing something, just have to wait and see. I really don't want to have to go back on the assembly line or be transferred to another facility but it's out of my hands. Incessant gossip and wild ass speculation and rumor-mongering has already begun, joy.

Well, that was disorienting! Went in for a fairly short interview, didn't really think much of an impression had been made but I did follow up with my references as requested, then about an hour ago I got a call from the lady who interviewed me saying that unless all my references totes bagged on me I had the job. Whoa!

I think that because it's A) a temporary (six to nine months duration) position and B) with Planned Parenthood that will C) require working at multiple locations (it's an Abstraction Assistant post, doing data entry for HIPAA required records reconciliation between paper and electronic data) they weren't getting much of a response and when a self actualized data/computer geek who doesn't want to deal with people and can travel showed up they jumped at it.

So I start in about two weeks. Money is nothing much, but it's not terrible, bennies start immediately (Kaiser, woohoo!) (although I really like my current doc ) and if I like working for them I can certainly see about applying for other positions. If not, at the end of the job I can just cruise the unemployment for a while as need be. Because a layoff is a guaranteed gimme for that.

BFF has already returned her reference call, two more to go!

Woo, Smartie, how awesome! You go, girl!

My dear Queen, I shall message you and give you food truck info galore!

The girl not only has a bob, but she has red hair now! The hairdresser dyed her a shade darker than its natural brown to get rid of the blonde highlights, did a color prep on the bottom, and ombred the red in the bottom, with extra red around her face. It's a shade off from a natural red, and it's an awesome teenager hairstyle. She's thrilled!

Well, the healthcare field will be blowing up for the foreseeable future, so if I can score a permanent spot that would be a good move--union job, good bennies, etc. We'll see how it goes.

Plus, I've been feeling a great need for relevance in my work and this is a good dose of that. Putting my money where my mouth is, as it were.

Yay for the job, Smartie!

Yay for good haircuts and colors, Carolia!

Work has been crazy; too crazy. I called in today. Even though tomorrow is my RDO, I may go in super early just to knock out some stuff and turn in my timecard and time tracking. We shall see.

I slept in until 11:00 (after contacting my boss at 6:30 this morning). I'm still not feeling 100%, but at least I can sit upright now without the room spinning and me wanting to toss cookies.

I need to clean up my kitchen, and I'll probably get to that in a few minutes.

me, neither. I had a phone job once (in Colorado Springs) and you sit in a cubicle with maximum stress and minimal movement. worst thing for a human.

if you need to be in one place and stressing out at least give the employees a treadmill to run on. instead we got donuts - I think they wanted us to get fat enough we couldn't get better jobs.

Here is what I've been working on for the last 3 weeks when I'm not hoeing weeds in the garlic.

It is the new website for our local dirt track. I'm pretty proud of it.

My SO decided to buy a race truck this year (he's been wanting to race since he moved here and got a shot at a cheap truck) and this is my volunteer contribution to both the track and our little town.

There was a big beetle in my bathroom this morning. I sprayed it and in its dying throes, it fell into the trash can so I didn't even have to pick it up to dispose of it.

It's the little things that make me happy, really.

In Florida a big beetle generally seats seven and has flying range of 2400 nautical miles.

The weather is being strange even by the standards of Parallel Hell. Yesterday morning we had a blizzard for an hour. Then it snowed off and on all day. But the ground is warm, so the roads are wet but not slick. Then last night it rained. Then later it snowed more. Now it's raining again, fairly hard. It's not that cold so the roads will be fine, but this is really pretty strange. But we need the moisture, so I'm not complaining.

Yay for new jobs and new hair and dead beetles (in the house) and new websites!

I'm on the Cape, procrastinating starting on Dad's study. Nasty weather and when I think what I left, I could cry. Made the mistake of going into my mother's bedroom closet. Jesus, emptying that could take a week. WHY DO OLD WOMEN COLLECT DRY CLEANER BAGS?! Cut that out, NOW.

Of course you can recycle them, but do that--don't leave them to pile up.

Need to choose the soundtrack for my day.

Congratulations to Smartie and hoorays for everyone else. Hope you're soon back to your old brilliant vivacious self, Wolf.

Yesterday I went nuts and did all the floors. The trifecta, sweep, mop, vacuum. Today is promising to be slow, but I have class tonight and It's my turn to teach. A seminar on similarities between Christian and Pagan/Ceremonial rites. A seminar means I come up with an interesting idea and let the students do the work.

I went to a Northern Colorado Water Conference in Fort Morgan once; somebody had scribbled a note and taped it over the restroom urinal: "Flush twice, Sterling needs the water."

So, that means you're in the South Platte Basin. Covers a lot of area southwest of here. About a fourth of the state. Well, maybe not that much.

Keep peeing! We do need the water.

Yes. Self-discipline and Initiative have yet to make me their bitch. The sole motivator I have is that I don't want more work later. That and money. Maybe a little pride. But honestly, I'd love to be Vanna White….

I've filled 2 boxes to go to the Public Library. Progress is glacial.

Good thing: have Dad's sound system cranked and look forward to hot bath in Jacuzzi tonight. Yeehaw! This is how I was meant to live.

Prob'ly rainy 'n' shit this weekend. Looks like the shop gets cleaned up, table saw switch gets repaired, new blades get put on the table and radial arm saws, lathe gets a new drive belt, get everything squared away for summer projects. The fun part is finding places and parts for all the new hand tools I've acquired over the winter. I need blades for a power planer and racks for hex and star drivers (those fuckers were expensive!) and a place to hang up the new dado stack. I love spring cleaning!

this week Sammie was a little worse, just a little, but it seemed to be a crucial difference: he couldn't get comfortable. so, I made the decision and had him euthanized. there is a big empty space on the couch this morning.

so far Fritz and Bunny haven't seemed to notice.

Ay, Jackie -- I'm so sorry. You're a good puppy mom. I just went and looked at my old girl who's sleeping and dreaming, and I couldn't bear if she weren't comfortable. Hold Fritz and Bunny just a bit closer today. You're in my thoughts.

Jackie, I'm so sorry.

I was in the middle of baking Chicken Provencal last night when my oven element decided to go "brooooiiiiing" and flame out. The dish was halfway through it's cooking time and I had just got done basting it. Sigh...

Now I have to hope I can find a local place with the correct element, or order on-line. I'd rather find it locally. It's not that hard to replace an element.

I dunno man, first the fridge went and I had it repaired (although they never got the icemaker working), now the oven element, what's next? Part of me just wants to say "screw it" and get a whole new kitchen suite anyway, but the sensible part tells me that's dumb. I can get a whole suite for (oven/stove fridge, microwave and dishwasher) at Costco for about 4,000 grand, but that's a big chunk of change. Hubby has been wanting stainless steel appliances for awhile, but I'm sure I'm just going to replace the oven element.

I'm going to have to get cleaned up and start the hunt.

If you're going to change up your oven, taters, may I suggest going over to gas? I am loving my new range so much after fifteen years of crappy electric stoves. Instant heat, tunable to my every need and independent of power outages. Much less fussy about burnable outable parts too.

If your existing appliances aren't worn out, new appliances might not be any more reliable. It's the same old story; the Chinese have made a science out of skating as close as possible to the edge of the specs. If the IEEE says it's OK to run the insulation at 160 F, they will shave a few thousandths off the wiring size until they are right there. Same thing throughout the machine including the framework. The bearings and seals in the motor, the bushings in the timer, everything is trimmed right to the limit. So a lot of times older appliances will be more reliable after simple repairs. Also, buying new appliances means you have to go through the shakedown failure rate all over again.

Awww Jackie, I'm so sorry.

Taters, replacing an element is actually pretty easy. As I found out last week. It must be the season!

I've replaced an oven element before; in my first house. It was easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy.

If and when I decide to get new appliances, they won't be LG. Jeebus, bad reviews everywhere!

I received a PM on FB from my daughter. She and my son-in-law were thinking of coming down. I told them to come on down. I hope they do; I haven't seen them in awhile.

Jackie, I'm sorry. It's always hard to give a friend that final gift.

Taters, 4000 grand is four million dollars. Those appliances better damn well cook the food for you and clean the kitchen afterwards.

My class was a success, the group brought up a lot of aspects of the topic I hadn't considered. I went grocery shopping before breakfast so that the beef burgundy can be in the crockpot a full 8 hours and be ready by five. I'll have been gone by then. Gonna get me a steak and maybe take in a movie.

Jackie - That's so sad. I've been dog-less for 1½ yrs now and it still hurts.

Made some Nutella gelato for a family Italian get-together tomorrow (We're not Italian. We just like to eat, I guess.) It came out really really good. Thank you Giada.
