The poor guy is in a wheelchair and people are always picking on the guy and bullying him on the dope. It's freaking disgusting. So what if Jamie often acts like an ahole. Wouldn't you be made at the world if you became parlayzed at 20 years old?

To pretend for a minute that the OP is serious, on reason Jamie McGarry doesn't get extra compassion or whatever because of his disability is because he would fucking hate that, and consider it patronising. The other is that he caused the disability himself by driving drunk, and that means a lot of people will have no compassion for him whatsoever, rightly or wrongly.

Finally a serious answer. Thank you. Obviously driving drunk is a horrible, terrible thing to do. Yes he caused the accident himself. I think he paid the price though. Also the Dr. was negligent in treating him and that led to his paralysis.

The thing about Jamie that set everyone off was that when he first showed up most of his posts were about how he had been discriminated against by his health club because they wouldn't provide him with special equipment that only seemed to need, or wouldn't allow him to use the equipment they had in a dangerous manner, and they didn't support him when he blocked in someone who had parked in a handicapped space until the police could get there. Then he went on to start threads about other things that he felt he was being mistreated because he was in a wheelchair. Almost all of his posts were adversarial, and he kept playing the "everyone has to do things my way because I'm in a wheelchair" card. If anyone ever dared to point out that maybe if he worked with people instead instead of immediately screaming "discrimination" he might get better results (including other people with similar experiences) they were dismissed because they obviously couldn't understand what life was like for him.

He finally mellowed out a bit, but his initial attitude left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. You only get one chance to make a first impression, and he blew it.

I think I pointed out there that my late wife, who due to combined complications from her diabetes, Parkinson's, and only partial use of her right arm that she'd had since birth had to use a scooter to get around outside the house during her last few years, got along quite well by the simple expedient of being pleasant and polite whenever she needed assistance. It was amazing how she could get people to go out of their way to help her without having to raise her voice or threaten to report them for ADA violations.

Well the bad taste for me was when Super Handicapped Man, after a stream of self-righteous complaints against handicaped policies or whateverthefuck, started a series of posts clearly showing that, he may be in a wheelchair, but he was still very much the jerk that caused him to be handicapped in the first place. (whew, that was long winded)

While that is most certainly true, continuing to sympathize isn't helping him to reach realistic frame of mind. No matter how he came to be here, this is how it is and it isn't going to change. The most benefit is gained from learning to accept that and work within the limitations. No use encouraging him to wallow.

Yeah, I've hated him (as much as you can hate someone on the internet who's really just highly annoying) since his first or second thread. I actually tried to engage him in conversation, and rather than talk about what was brought up, it was all, "You don't understand! YOU DON'T GET IT!
