I sang at a wedding today for the first time!

. . . with about 20 seconds notice.

So my friend called me last week to tell me that she and her longtime sweetie were getting married Monday afternoon in the woods near their house, and could we come by? Well sure, we'd love to! We show up, and just as described, we were two of about 8 people there total, none of them family. Just a few friends, including the person who performed the ceremony. We drank and snacked and chatted for a bit, and then we traipsed out into the woods and they did the deed. Hugs, hugs, then somebody said, "Scarlett, you should sing something!" (Music had been one of the topics of chatter, and as it turns out, a couple of us are performers.) Umm, really? OK. Fortunately one of my two favorite a cappella songs is a love song, so I did that. Then back to the house for more wine and snacks and chatter, and then everybody went home.

Pretty neat, on top of the honor of being invited to witness such a very small ceremony. Their families don't even know yet! First time we were ever at a wedding that was smaller and more casual than ours.

Good on ya! I'd rather light myself on fire than sing in public.

Jean Ritchie's "One I Love." (The words and melody I learned are a bit different, and I left out the "over the mountain" verse.)

From the thread title, I was hoping you were just walking by a wedding and decided to drop in and belt one out. But I suppose your way was more well received.

Usually, yes. But my singing voice is greatly improved by thoroughly soaking my vocal cords in alcohol. Oddly enough, the hearing of my audience also seems to be improved if they tip back a few too. I'm sure there is a scientific explanation.

The explanation I prefer, Jag, is: The more you drink, the better I sound.

I was picturing a highly improbable wedding mishap that led Ms. Scarlet to have to very suddenly replace a scheduled performer.

The wedding sounds lovely. Yes, I thought my first was small and informal, too.
