Hacking E-mails

This seems like as good a time as any to fight my ignorance (...sorry, I couldn't resist)...

Four times in the past few weeks I have received spam for various pharmaceuticals, and each one has supposedly come from someone on my list of contacts. What is most likely...have their emails been hacked, or has mine?
