Might have to go to my first non-family funeral this week*
My co-worker's grandma suddenly died of a heart attack on Thursday (no condolences necessary). It's not like it's the first time a co-worker's grandma has passed away. But this one was different. He's been working here for, what 6 or 7 years and his dad and grandma (they raised him, his grandma was basically his mom) have been shopping at my store since the day he started working here so I've known her the whole time. They're both in the store at least once a week. On top of that he's my [non-gay, not that there's anything wrong with that] work-husband. In fact, we've had co-workers tell us to stop 'flirting', a customer even walked in (unannounced to us) and said 'um, do you need me to leave you two alone', we were horse playing.
I didn't know her outside of work, but I saw a lot of her and really liked her. Also, co-worker's best friend works for me too, so he's known her forever as well. Anyways, I've been to plenty of funerals. All my grandparents have kicked the bucket as well as a few relatives, but this would be the first time I've been to one where I'm not related to anyone involved. Also, to make it harder, this is very much one of those 'she was fine when I saw her a few days ago', as opposed to 'well, she's been sick for months' cases where you know it's coming any day now. *I say 'might' because it's a small family business and if we're swamped at that time, it just won't happen. **I'm thinking it was a stroke/aneurysm/brain bleed, not a heart attack. I heard 'heart attack' the day it happened, but I also heard that she was in an induced coma, and when I hear that, I associate that with brain events, but it's just an assumption, I really don't know and it's not all that important. |
