Google just managed to piss me off even more re:YT

You Tube Pop-ups.

Side note:
I don't actually mind ads. But YT is being really obnoxious with the placement. Were I making videos for YT, I'd be thoroughly pissed of because the ads get slammed in without any regard to the actual content. I know there's not an actual person breaking the stream and starting the ad, but since more and more people are clearly marking segments in long form videos, I cannot understand why YT can't those cut offs made by the uploader.

Anyway:

As we all know, Google has started a war against ad blockers. The world, of course, found ways around that. So I've installed those. It's not as seamless as Ublock, but it works well enough. Every now and then the player has a hiccup, try to start an ad and stops within a second, letting the video continue.

That's a minor problem, and I expect the script makers and adblockers will find ways around this eventually.


But now, YT throws up a pop up, within it's UI, over the video (which keeps playing), called My Ad Center*, where I'm supposed to... I dunno, rate ads, share my preferences ASF. It's easy to click away, but still - A fuggin pop up!

I'm reminded of this, now old, but strangely apt video from 2010.

There are some videos on YouTube re: defeating YouTube’s ad blocking war. If they ask you to rate the ad, tell them you would never buy that product, or, email the advertiser and tell them why you’ll never buy their product.

I haven't seen this yet. I'm still using uBlock Origin, and as long as I keep it updated weekly I do not see ads or have that weird thing where the page won't load at all.

* I'm wondering if a boat can be made with a Stirling engine, in a Lake Ontario charter fishing boat, that's actually practical. I've got lots of ideas, but I'll have to win the PowerBall to actually try any of them.

OK, NOW I know google owns youtube but only because I googled that question. before that, I had no idea.

and honest to god, I don't mind watching ads put in on videos that are long and I want to watch anyway. like all the Mayday: Flight Disaster videos (millions!) or my latest thing Rocky Kanaka and Sitting With (shelter) Dogs.

but like Pencil, I HATE when there is clearly a place for the commercial but instead they are inserted any-old-way WTF.

OR if I can't watch because google/youtube can tell I have adblocker and they won't let me choose to watch it WITH the ads I am willing to have.

so, my points are:

1. what the hell is even going on?

2. I am willing to have ads! why, then, does youtube just sometimes fucking keep me from watching anyway? *

3. everything is better on my chromebook. better than my laptop going through chrome, for some reason. which is fucking ironic (isn't it? am I wrong here?) because chromebook is all about google!

That's not all!

People have learned that Google is collecting your data, among other various shady things. In response to that, as well as the war on ad-blocking, people have been switching their web browsers en masse, to Firefox or other non-Google-owned things, where there is another version of the adblocker that's been at war with Google available.

In retaliation to this, they now have put in blank space of silence before your video starts, adblocker or not. They're getting real salty over there, and a good chunk of what they're doing is illegal in some countries, with this whole war on adblockers thing.

The takeaway from this is that it's actually pretty imperative you get off Google Chrome, because they're kinda going through some legal shit as well. Who knows what they've got about you, data-wise.

Problem is - so many browsers are based on Chromium, the source code behind Chrome: Microsoft Edge (yes, really), Opera, Blink, Vivaldi, Amazon Silk, Samsung Internet and a bunch of other I've never heard of.

AFAICT: Safari () and Firefox are the only major browsers not based on Chromium. Probably Ghostery Browser too.

Can one be made? Definitely. Can you buy one? Hah, he said bitterly. Bit of a sore spot.

Modern AIP Stirling engines are a heavy duty development of the Automotive Stirling Engine Program Mod II engine. The ASE program spent about 100 million of our hard earned tax dollars back in the 80's which was about matched by Detroit, most notably Ford but also GM and AMC. They developed a nice little Rinia V4 Alpha that was road tested for a total of 750,000 miles and thousands of dyno hours. The only fly in the ointment was that it put out 82 hp and weighed almost 500 lb. Add in lingering concerns about cost and high mileage durability, plus the fact that fuel injection finally made cars run right again, and ultimately the engine was not adopted by industry.

However all that open source R&D was ransacked by Kockums, a Swedish company that inherited the foundational Stirling lore from Philips. Now they produce a big brother version called the V4-275R for use in submarines. But of course since it involves military secrets you can't buy one. And you couldn't afford one if they were for sale.

But could one theoretically be used to power a nice little lake boat? You bet. Excellent fuel economy too.

Headquartered in my hometown. Originally a company in the rail industry, shifted towards shipbuilding (tankers and cargo) and went bust in the 80's. What was left started making subs, but they are now owned by SAAB. Huh? SAAB? Well yeah, they were originally making airplanes for the military, they diversified to cars for a couple of decades, but the military branch survived and is a fairly big company (13k employees).
SAAB also had Scania heavy trucks, which is alive and well, but nowadays owned by VW.

When was that R&D killed? I'd like to know who's to blame.

I was one of the three subscribers to Google music so when they shut that down they moved over my playlists and gave me a YouTube subscription for the same cost, $10 per month. That gave me all my music plus all the videos ad free. I thought it completely fair of course and have watch ad free for years. In March they are putting it up to $17! I don’t know whether to move to a cheaper service for my music and fight with YouTube over ads or just pay it. It has been so lovely.

PS when google music still existed google sent me presents! I had my first Chromecast device and nest speaker just show up randomly in my mailbox. I loved them so, it seemed mutual.
