The character of Chewbacca was inspired by George Lucas’s big, hairy Alaskan malamute, Indiana. According to Lucas, the dog would always sit in the passenger seat of his car like a copilot, and people would confuse the dog for an actual person.

I'm no English major, but I know this well for 40 years ago.


Keep Sancho going. He kept his poor addle brained master going. He was the blue-print for side-kicks. Surpassed by Dr. Watson or Samwise Gamgee, but surely more important and better at being a sidekick than Chewie.

When minor noble Alonso Quijano decides/believes he is the Knight Errant, Don Quixote, his servant Sancho agrees to be his squire with his families blessing.

He looks after Quixote, provides useful Spanish Proverbs and acts as the everyman character throughout the novel. (The first modern novel). Sancho is indeed considered the prototype or precursor to the sidekick.

Don't let a Wookie win. Sancho is too important to the history of sidekicks to lose to Chewbacca.
