August Accolades

Man, it is a gorgeous day out there, and looking like plenty more in store. Got the bills paid and the fridge stocked and the chores done, and I'm somewhat organized. Its almost enough to make me optimistic.

Fiber internet is finally available in my neighborhood! The only choice for decades has been Cox and I hate them. I was overjoyed when I saw the trucks installing the lines three months ago and I’ve been checking the website every day and first thing this morning it showed availability.

I called first thing and I’ll be the first one in the neighborhood with fiber. Eight more days. I can’t wait to tell Cox to fuck off.

That's great news, haj. As much as I hate ver*zon, I do like fiber.

Our cable box is as fried as a twinkie at a state fair. This would be a rant, but my rave is that after giving up on the automated "let me try to reboot it remotely" robots and waiting on hold for 25min, I got the most easy to work with agent on the line who is sending a new box and router (that I won't use but also won't have to pay for) because as it turns out the self-immolating one was due for replacement this month anyway. He also helped me navigate the investigation into "why is my bill higher again?" that I'd been putting off. I plan to cut cable and landline eventually but am not changing from my legacy plan until Swimmy has a cell phone of her own.

Order a laptop from Macys on Tuesday and it came on Thursday. The mail lady knocked on my door because she didnt want to leave it in the apt lobby.

I took a risk and it worked out because I know these are 2 things you are not supposed to have delivered

Laptop
TV

I’m supposedly technically ineligible because I very briefly held a foreign title* and didn’t renounce it soon enough.

*It was for like 36 hours and I didn’t know about it until years later. Long story. But that was the root of the whole Prince (at the time) Charles thing.

If she calls, I intend to make her beg for a few minutes... Maybe about 10 or so, before I humbly accept.

Nah, who am I kidding... I'll tell her, immediately, that I wouldn't take the job, even if it comes with a year's supply of ice cream. And don't bother offering the pony. Your offer still isn't sweet enough... Now maybe if she includes a 4-year supply of cotton candy, I might reconsider... MIGHT.

Buying quality can be very satisfying.

So 40 years ago I bought a Delta contractor's table saw. This was back when they were heavy duty with cast iron table top. I've used it a lot over the years. Yesterday I had to cut some oak for a mobile base I'm putting together for that same table saw. Set the fence, ran a test piece and slid it into the metal bracket to check fit. Vacuum tight. This is after being moved twice from house to house and with no tune ups.

After I was done, I patted the saw and said "We got some stuff to build".

Keep that baby forever, dude. The feds are fixing to roll out new regs that will jack up the cost of even the cheapest hobby level table saw to $1200, and it goes up from there. They're going to make that patented instant blade brake thing mandatory now.

Oh yeah, so August Accolades!

Turns out I’m still NOT anemic anymore, even tough I’ve been feeling tired sometimes. Dehydration? Sleep deprivation? Carb crashes? Probably all above. But not iron deficiency anemia!

My Radial Arm Saw I was sorry I moved and ended up trashing it. That was my first big tool. But my Craftsman Bandsaw I've had since 1994 or so and I've recently rebuilt it and plan to keep it as long as I have a shop space. I love my table saw and drill press, but they are much newer and far more likely to fail.
The Radial Arm Saw was 1963 and I bought it used in 1993 for $200, the Bandsaw was 1970 and only $100.

I had a lathe in the last house, I rebuilt with elbow grease, 3 cans of WD-40 and about $25 worth of parts, I sold it for $20 shortly before moving. Fun project, but I never really did anything with it. That was from the 1940s apparently.

I managed not to get rid of any of the big tools in the move. I still have my Craftsman bandsaw which looks identical to yours. One of the current projects it to put mobile bases on the table saw and band saw so I can move them out of the way most of the time and then move them into a better position when I have some sawdust to make.

Egad, iron IS a little low. But no anemia. Looks like I’ll forever be taking iron pills.

Anyway, what’s not low? My wins today. Up $850 and the night is still young!
