Swan Song Spoilers
I just finished Swan Song by Robert McCammon. I read it about 20 odd some years ago, but had forgot almost everything about it except for the basic premise. Dolores Reborn mentioned that she loved the book and wouldn't mind discussing it when I was finished so here goes..
My Thoughts. Overall it was a quick passed interesting read, but I had a few things I thought should have happened. What was the point of the glass crown? The way it was built up I kept waiting for its power to have some sort of meaning when it came to ridding the world of evil. Its only role seemed to be leading Sister to Swan. I was a little disappointed that Roland died without ever coming out of his insanity about the game. I expected him to have some sort of revelation instead of the colonel. I also would have liked some back story to sister, before she became a bag lady. It was only touched upon, I wanted to know her real name. I would like to read an apocalyptic story just once that doesn’t reach into paranormal experience to keep the story going. I did enjoy the book, if I recall correctly it is one of Robert McCammons best work. I kept comparing it to The Stand by Stephen King, I think Swan Song had a better overall ending, but both books seemed to need to have a character who characterized the devil. Swan Song did a better job of keeping the character symbolizing good as a central part of the story. The Stands Mother Abigail really seemed to only served to get the survivors to Nebraska, while Swan seemed to be a little more central to the story of be able to make things grow. Which brings another point up, why would the Army of Excellence go to Marys Rest to get food, and then pull out all the corn instead of guarding it, or trying to make sure they were able to have Swan grow more? Thoughts? |
