He says you're five weeks because they peg your "weeks" by your last menstrual period. Even though you know you ovulated when you did, you're officially about 3-4 weeks pregnant when you actually GET pregnant (implantation). Crazy, huh?

It IS crazy! My mother sent me a link last night and I read up about that - seems life begins at egg being prepped for release, which I suppose makes some sense. The egg itself is alive, after all, it's just in waiting.

But it sure does sound weird!

"Anyway. So no deli meat, hot dogs, soft cheese, fish only once a week (which is fine, I rarely eat fish), caffeine and alcohol are right out. We're good."

Er, what? Why did he give you all those restrictions?

I think there's some concern with listeria, which is vanishingly rare anyway, when it comes to the deli meat and hot dogs. The "soft cheese" thing is actually UNPASTEURIZED cheese which, again, is very difficult to find. Fish is mercury, and only some kinds of fish are a mercury concern.

Frankly, I think there's a lot of WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?!?! mindset when it comes to the pregnancy diet. Whenever I do get knocked up, I intend to eat pretty much the same way I do now; for me, deli lunchmeat is a good way to get a quick dose of protein, I intend to stick with my current fish intake, I'll still eat sushi if it's from a reputable place, and if I want half a glass of wine in the 3rd trimester I'm not going to deny myself. I rarely have caffeine. But every pregnant lady needs to decide what's acceptable risk for herself, I guess.

Yeah, that's why I was confused. My doctor only told me to not drink more than 2 cups of coffee worth of caffeine a day, and not to drink alcohol. That's it. Not even a mention of the other stuff. I was wondering if maybe it has to do with location or something else particular to the doctor.

The only thing I've eaten differently with this pregnancy was trying to eat more meat. Mostly because I was craving it a lot anyway. I guess I'll see in 2 months if all those hot dogs I ate messed up my baby.

Yes, to elaborate on the restrictions: he did clarify that unpasteurized cheese was something to avoid - generally in the US there's little problem with that, and with the deli meats, he told me that the kind you can buy in the packets are perfectly fine, it's the stuff fresh from the deli that has the higher risk of listeria, mle nailed the mercury in fish deal... that's about it. Sorry I didn't elaborate, I'm kind of all over the place - it's all new to me!
