Whither 'Raffishness?

Posted 9th March 2009 at 08:29 AM by 73 LeBaron

Gawd, I was so excited to discover these boards! I was a lurker at SDMB for years, and once-upon-a-time a guest member, but I never paid, and when free membership came along the tone of the board was becoming more intimidating, so the Dope was pretty much only objective, and it looked like it might be coming apart . . .

Comes now Giraffe, with the suggestion that there might be found all the fun of SDMB without the uneasy, walk-on-eggshells baggage of a deteriorating relationship. (The whole thing reminds me of the last five years of my marrige, actually.)

So here's this shiny new board (with icons! cool icons that actually represent the posters, or at least their interests.) Joining up was a no-brainer, and I've posted a few times. Now I want to know what comes next. There seems to be an unstated effort to be as Dope-like as possible without actually carrying over the bacon and phbbth's rack. ("Stop making the sign of the cross, Timmy, we're Methodists now!") And I find that even with the anonymity of "73 Lebaron" I am still painfully shy about posting. Maybe blogging will be better.

As part of my day job, I maintain a blog--actually a "personality page" on the website of my employer. My long-distance lady says it's about events and entertainment here in the Valley and not about me (she's sort of biased in favor of me, bless her sweet heart!), but honestly, it's much easier to write that stuff than to write about myself and the absolute mundanity of my life . . .

Kris Kristofferson seems to have written the soundtrack to this little bit of logorrhea; I've been a poet and a picker, a prophet and a pusher, a pilgrim and a preacher and a problem when (used to) get stoned. I have worked in theatre and dug ditches, been recognized nationally in my field and ignored at the Kroger store, and I make a very nice red ale. Two years ago I hit the reset button, moved 700 miles, and started over, and I'm still a false monarch butterfly--I'm not extroverted, but I can successfully mimic extrovert behavior. So I'm not likely to be much of a thread-starter, and since I have decided to limit myself to an hour a day on the board, it's likely that someone will make my point before I even realize I have one when there is a thread might be moved to post in.

And I want giraffeboards.com to work, dammit!

So what's the next move? I dunno, but I suppose something will come along . . .

Funny, I came here to post that it was a beautiful day in the Valley, even if I forgot to go to the MDA car show Saturday. The actual trigger was that I didn't wear a jacket to work today for the first time this year. Last week started off at 4F and ended at 83F, so perhaps spring is indeed on its way. In six weeks I'll be bitching about how warm it is, but all in all, I'm happy to be here.

And happy there's a giraffeboards.com to blather on endlessly . . .

Blather, for those unaware, is contemporary slang... it's dervived from a contraction of the internet term Web lather.

You sound like you have stories to tell. Mind if I sit by the fire and listen?
