Ah, it's that time of year again, when I get to sit and regurgitate three hours of football into a newspaper game story in 8 minutes or so.

Before I left for tonight's game, I called the copy desk to confirm my deadline. They said 10:45, with a little implied wiggle room. After a long contest full of ticky-tack flags flying all over the field, the home team won by 2 as their academically-ineligible kicker watched his replacement miss every kick.

When the final whistle...

I received an anonymous tip this afternoon on our general line while the news guys were out at lunch. It's fairly sensitive info about a local official that could probably get the anonymous source in trouble if it was linked back, so I packed it into an e-mail and sent it to the news guys.

Except I also sent it to the athletic director of one of the local high schools, who has the same initials as our crime reporter.

He sent a reply saying "Oops! I'll pretend...

Tonight marks the start of the high school football season. My town has two high schools now, and one of them is home almost every week, so I won't do a lot of traveling.

But I will be writing for the daily down the road. My town is an outlier in their coverage area, and we're owned by the same company, so come football season, I act sort of like a field office. I enjoy the opportunity to play a daily reporter.

However, due to consolidation, three daily papers are printed...

The local trap-shooting youth team went to a big tournament in Vegas a week or two ago and "dominated", according to everyone affiliated with the club. After my paper came out Friday, I had several angry calls and emails about how pathetic it was they only got back page coverage, without the 14 pictures they sent in. One of them yells, "I don't know how many kids there are in this swim team you have in there every week..." Ummm, between the two teams in town, only about 350....
