Tough choice. The Clash it is though.

Random youtubing brought me into the Land of Punk so I thought, what the hell, I'd start a poll.
I gotta be honest, I've never really been a fan of the Ramones. Just can't get into them. I like the Clash well enough, but shit man: Sex Pistols. |

Sex Pistols had the raw energy, the Clash had underrated skillz. I think their drummer was great.
Actually I'd rather listen to the Dead Kennedys or Bad Religion than any of the choices. |

Awwww, FoN. This is almost... mean, man.
The Ramones were the first punk rock band and certainly had the longest career. The Sex Pistols' sound (well, it wasn't music) was the epitome of punk--anarchic, raw, and fugly. Then the Clash went to school and pwned their jedi masters. They took the more tender center of rawest punk, seasoned it with some ska, reggae, and a bit of funk, and served us up a fine meal of juicy grooves with more prime-cut lyrics to chew on. All of these bands have garnered significant accolades and their place in music history, but if we're going to hold bands to the first tenet of punk, all of them failed when they made their first buck off a gig. If you're going to the bother of being beholden to your enemy, then you might as well be a success. So, the Claaaaash. Last edited by Taur; 11th December 2009 at 04:54 PM. |

Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, Butthole Surfers, X. Lots of local bands.
Funny, I love the Clash, but I've never associated them with punk (though I know they are). |

I wouldn't call Butthole Surfers punk. Don't know what I would call them, but not that...

All the above
Throw in some Dead Kennedys, Descendants, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, D.I., D.O.A., Fear, Germs, L7, Minor Threat, Operation Ivy, Misfits. All a bit different from each other, all a hell of a lot of fun. Gnome |

Tough Call.
Went with the Clash, though I love the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols are the iconic punk band. Gotta go with what HKF said, Pistols had the energy, but the Clash had the skillz. The Ramones run the middle ground. The Dead Kennedys are the punk band I was most into when I was a punk rocker, myself. |

What, no love for the Voidoids?
I think it's highly subjective; do you want anger over everything? Are you going more with the stripped-down sound as paramount, or do you want it over-the-top? I think each of the three bands given interprets it their own way. |

The Clash, all the way. My Dad raised me on them from before I could talk, and they've stood the test of time. The older I got, the better they became to me. Joe was one of my heroes, and I'd always hoped I'd one day get to meet him. And fuck 2002, while I'm at it. What an awful year that was.
All fine bands mentioned here, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, all great. I'm still a fan of the funner little bands like NOFX and the Vandals. When you first hear lines sung as smoothly and smarmily as: I'm well aware that you are chemically imbalanced but I'm the kind of guy that likes a challenge ...you know you're going to have a fun ride. ![]() |

I'm voting Iggy Pop and the Ramones because I'm from Michigan! They were playing in the local bars when I was in High School. Good thing I had a fake ID...

Hell yes, The Clash are the only band that matters. I have the London Calling cover for a tattoo.
Iggy and the Stooges run a close second though, but I used to live in MI so I'm kinda biased. Smithish were you at the Detroit Stooges reunion show? If so you may have seen me there. |

I'm going to change my answer to the Buzzcocks, soley for the reason that I started a Pandora channel of them, and got the following bands as well: The English Beat, Sex Pistols, The Ramones, Iggy & The Stooges, The Jam, The Clash, Pixies, Dramarama, and The Damned.
Beats me what's next. Last edited by Uthrecht; 14th December 2009 at 08:14 AM. Reason: ah, it was Joy Division next. |

No, I moved to AZ in 1981. I would have said I saw Iggy in Lansing with Patti Smith but upon reflection that doesn't seem right... Back when I had a life I went to a LOT of shows, but at some point they all started to blur together...

Uh, Stiff Little Fingers, duh. And no love for the Vibrators or the UK Subs? WTF?
Actually I'm down with most of the bands mentioned, and I voted for the Clash. Last edited by RedRosesForMe; 14th December 2009 at 11:43 AM. Reason: Peter and the Test Tube Babies and the Gonads and Anti-Nowhere League and the Business and fucking SPLODGE |

Nope. I only even really remember them because I have an ancient vinyl album called Let Them Eat Jellybeans which has a LOT of esoteric punkers on it. Weird songs like Isotope Soap and whatnot. I do, however, have the complete discographies of Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Devo, Oingo Boingo, Sex Pistols, Suicidal Tendencies, AND both the movie and soundtrack of Repo Man.
