I'm doing the no-avatar avatar. It's very New Wave.

Wise counsel needed: Maine to Chicago via air or rail? Haven't checked prices yet but I'll bet they're comparable.
Why flying sucks: there is NO nonstop flight. Why rail sucks: 24 hours on a train? |

Edinburgh on New Years Eve is the place to be. Considering the vast amounts of alcohol I'll be consuming the best description is Holly-Jolly.

Hmmm. Two votes for rail. That means I'll be away from home for 5 days at the very least, and with the wood stoves out, the bill for electric backup will be high. Don't know if there'll be parking charges as well. OTOH, savings over airfare will be about $200 — a pretty big deal for me. So that's hunky-dory.
Hunky-dory is not an option, I see. Still thinking. If I had a laptop, I'd blog the trip! |

I tried to do that (blog the trip) the year we took the train from CO to CA for Thanksgiving (it was more like 40 hours each way). Sadly, most of the trip we didn't have any internet available (going through Utah and Nevada, super rural mostly). Maybe the East Coast trains have wireless.
I actually found train travel to be the most relaxing of all travel options, and 24 hours would have been more doable than the two days each way our trip turned out to be. The first day is fine, but by a few hours into day 2 I got pretty stir-crazy. |

Hokey-pokey of course. That's what it's all about, this season and every season
That excuse is pretty hokey too. |

I picked heebie-jeebie only because a week or two before (we're still waiting to hear) my husband will probably be having his 5th spinal surgery. Good times... That means we won't be driving to Florida (Yay!), won't be seeing his folks (boo!), and I'll probably have to spend the day alone with my side of the family because spousal unit won't be able to ride that far and they won't come to our house because of the distance, and he'll be mad at me if I stay with him. Frankly, I don't care all that much about being with my mom and sibs - I just saw them all last week and the thought of two anna half hours of driving each way kinda pisses me off.
So, yeah, I'm anticipating a pretty sucky holiday. |

I will be making my usual trip up to Chicago to spend Christmas Eve with friends and Christmas Day with my family. However, this year the friend who is "responsible" for me relocating to the South five years ago will be coming with me and meeting them all for the first time. She's a bit nervous about it, partly because she's not that fond of flying in the first place and partly because she's a bit concerned about how they'll react to her. It doesn't help that she has a bit of crowd anxiety.

I voted 'heebie-jeebie' because there was no 'barely-carely'.
I try to get through the holidays with as little fuss or attention as possible. The holidays to me reek of obligation and disappointment. |
