I've been doing a lot of programming lately (C#) for work -- I am writing a Windows application that will do all sorts of neat things for troubleshooting large networks. How is this related, you ask? Well, it's turned into a hobby. I find myself wanting to work on it all the time. Every little task is like a neat puzzle with hundreds of different solutions and finding the most efficient is addicting as hell.

My wife thinks I'm strange, but that's okay. I'm kinda sorta getting a paycheck for it -- I'm putting in about 80 hours a week at it, but I only get paid for 40 -- but I think I'd do it even if weren't getting paid. So I think that's a hobby.

I used to bicycle a lot. Then I bought a gun. I realized that any hobby is an expensive venture, if you really want to pursue it, so I threw myself into guns, hunting and reloading with a religious fervor. It keeps me sane.

Recoil therapy with Bhodi and Anacanapuna Wednesday was a wonderful balm. We all kicked a few full-house, 300-grain loads out of the Super Blackhawk and cranked a bunch through 'Puna's Winchester '94. Good-natured insults were thrown around, and a new generation of legends were born that day on the range

I love the mechanics and ballistics of shooting and hand loading. They require discipline and a dedication to safety and detail.

I like to crochet--it's calming, a pretty cheap sort of hobby and I end up with warm comfy pretties that nobody else has. Plus, easy gifting!

I've seen people at the range training for summer biathlon. You ride the mountain bike, get off, shoot some targets and repeat. Looks like fun.

It is.

We talked about mounting paintball guns on the handlebars and having dogfights, but nothing came of it.

I stumbled into a pastels class and now I paint as a hobby. It's called painting, even though the pastels are like chalk-crayons. I love it and lose track of time when I do it, so I know I must enjoy it. It's the opposite of work, although I work hard at it.

I also write. I'm working on a novel (murder mystery-but I'm not really working on it at all at present) and I write poetry.

I also hang out on this one message board-not quite a hobby, but it does pass the time nicely.

Now that Digital Photography has come into it's own; there's lot's of possibilities. Start with a cameraphone and go up. Pick a subject; gritty cities-capes? Wildlife? (Even dogs or pigeons), Faces? Joy? Sadness?

There's a lot out there to observe.

Glass. Take a stained glass class. A glass fusing class is a little more physical, and a lot more dangerous, so that might be more exciting.
I'm too afraid of getting burned, but I love cutting, grinding and even foiling, even though that's tedious.

bad raffer! no treatie! (not really, only people who really want dogs should have them. ok.)

No idea what to suggest so will share my hobbies: pets, so that's out for you; walking, which I only like with pets; reading (always good); knitting - new to me, I started as brain exercise; avoiding housework; making fun of people; looking at pretty things (harder than you might imagine); messing around with computers and computer games and software; and having grandkids.

I used to play with Louisiana cooking; sew, especially hand sewing; ride a motorcycle or bicycle; learn to read literature in the original French or Spanish; and playing around with craft clay, beads, glass paint, and stuff like that.

I would like to try making a dollhouse and drawing dogs.

So, am I boring or what?

Dancing. It's good exercise, and you get to meet all sorts of weird and wonderful people. I mostly do lindy hop because I love swing music, but if that's not your cup of tea there's no shortage of dance styles out there.

HAHA! Nice one.

On a serious note, I'm addicted to Mortal Kombat Deception; however, I wish there were more characters.

My girlfriend's family and my parents will be getting me more ps2 games for Christmas. I have been instructed not to buy any more games until the Christmas season ends.

I build models. Doesn't matter whether it's plastic kits, pattern kits or scratch. It's very calming and helps me relax.

I love flight sims as well, but I understand that's a bit niche.

See, this is why I live in an apt even though I grew up in a house: There is always, always all the time, something that should be done. And many times there's something that really, really must be done.

I'm way too lazy to own a house.

Go to your local music store and get educated on guitars. Buy a moderately good one to start with; you can upgrade later. Strong suggestion: start acoustic, not electric. Get a good beginner book or two.

Be prepared for your fingers to hurt while you're starting. Gotta play your dues.

I have a 6-string and a 12-string. And if you ever wondered why anyone has ever played guitar, John Denver said it best.

I'm a woodworker, and like any devotee, I'm in it up to my neck. Over the years I've accumulated well over $20,000 worth of tools, machinery, books, and plans. That doesn't mean I paid that for it, but that's replacement cost. Acquiring the tools is as important a part of the hobby as using them.

The upside is pulling my granddaughter down the street in the hand-made stake-side wagon I built, or relaxing in the Adirondack chairs I built, or seeing the arts-and-crafts side table I built get all decked out for Christmas. Jewelry boxes for my wife and daughters-in-law, even the altar for a local church, all created in my shop.

There is a downside, of course. Hardwood becomes more and more expensive all the time, and there's the moral quandry of whether I'm part of the deforestation of the planet.
