October Ouchies (mini-rants)

So my air compressor died today. I'd had it for about 15 years. I got it when my FiL walked away from the condo after my MiL died. It was a little small, but ran faithfully. But today, it just stopped working. RIP little compressor.

I was chewing on my lips again, and they're sore as fucking hell. (WHY do I do that? Not when I'm having a seizure -- it's a nervous habit I've had since as long as I can remember)

And then just a little while ago, my dad fell and hit his head, and it bled like fuck. My mother and I were afraid he might have to have stitches! (Fortunately not) And of course, he kept insisting though he was fine.

The worst? The Pens game was supposed to be on TV tonight, on AT&T Sports. Guess what? A PIRATES game was on. FUCK YOU!!!! (It was only an exhibition game, so it's not that big a deal, but still....)

My grabbing tool broke today. The one I use to pick shit up from the floor when I'm in bed or my wheelchair. You never know how much you depend on something like that until you use it constantly. I was able to order a new one from Amazon and put it on same-day delivery. I never knew how much I depend on Amazon, too. Thank you, Jeff Bezos.

We're flying to Washington in just under two weeks. We had a nice easy flight from San Jose to Paine Field in Everett, Washington, but the airlines emailed us a flight change: in order to land in Everett, we had to do a two-leg flight either to Los Angeles or Boise first, then to Everett. Gah!

I had to call them and change so that we're flying from San Jose to Seattle. We're getting a bit old and stiff, and coping with that giant Seatac airport is no fun. Hopefully they don't disembark us on one of those dippy little "island" terminals which are detached from the main terminal building. You have to ride underground trams from the main building to get to those.

Call them and have a wheelchair waiting for you. You can get one for each of you if you like.

Facebook isn't working, and I can't play my favorite games.

The Steelers absolutely SUCKED last night. WTF is going on? Are we tanking, or something like that? Ben, your time has come and gone.

There's a rat in the kitchen whatcha gonna do?

Well, we actually had one. Discovered it when my wife shrieked around midnight. Couldn't find the bastard, so we spent a mostly sleepless night planning the extermination.

Seems the little bastard couldn't find his way out, so I saw him in the dog's crate this morning. He disappeared behind the couch when I went to get my little axe handle. Sure enough, when I move the couch we could see the fucker. So my daughter and I flipped the couch quick and I beat him (or her) to death with the axe handle.

Fuuuuck, that's not a way I would recommend starting your day.

*shudder* No, not a pleasant wake-up. Mice in the house don't bother me as much as the thought of rats, and this despite knowing there's a pet rat in a cage upstairs.

We started the day at the dentist's office. Swimmy's teeth have been trouble since she's grown them. Poor kid needs four fillings redone, one baby tooth pulled, and a consult for orthodontia. She tries so hard to take good care of them, but they're soft and crowded. The nice thing was the new dentist said hers were the same way when she was a girl, and it's not Swimmy's fault. That made her feel better.

I've killed three mice in last week. We've had the exterminator out twice to deal with the rats in ceiling of the basement. It seems that will fall being here, the critters are looking for a warm place to overwinter.

in my only other option was beating a rat to death with an ax handle (and I don't actually own an ax, what am I thinking?) I suspect I would move.

It's October - why is it so doggone hot and humid?? I was just out starting to organize my husband's workshop and I could barely last an hour before I was sweating and on the verge of saying bad words. I should be wearing a sweater at the very least!!

So I'm done, till the next cold front comes thru. Eventually. Maybe.

I'm in the same boat with boy #2. He also had issues with poorly formed enamel which apparently could be due to lots of ENT issues as a child. We went to an orthodontist yesterday and he needs braces (of course) but she also recommended jaw surgery because she thinks his bite is off. Um, that's a no on the surgery. Jury is still out on braces. I don't think he is too thrilled about going off to college next year with a mouth full of metal. (I know there are options like Invisalign or clear braces but they are a pain in the ass to maintain which I think would be worse than just sucking it up for two years with regular ole metal brackets). Oh and braces are freaking expensive. But he's just too handsome to not get his teeth fixed.

I saw a rat in the back yard a few days ago! It ran from behind the couch on the patio right by my FOOT and around the side of the house. Freaked me out. So I suspect Mr Rebo is a bit squeamish, as he decided to to buy a catch and release trap.

We ain't caught shit.

I'm sure it's helped that he weed-eated that whole side of the fence. Our neighbor has a big pile of wood right there, though, which might be home to a nest. Ugh. I hate outdoor icky rats.

(Our Ratty is a nice pet indoor rat! )

Swimmy inherited her father's narrow jaw, so I figured she'd be in braces eventually. MD needed them and I didn't even think hers were that crowded.
The before/after photos they took showed me how wrong I was.
Husband had upper braces as a kid, but his family ran out of money to do the bottom teeth. He finally got the lower ones fixed a few years ago and found that a surprising number of adults having orthodontia done. Turns out it's actually important for health reasons as well as appearance, as tooth/gum issues are common with crooked teeth and bad for heart health. The brackets aren't as obvious/obtrusive as they were when I was a kid. I'm glad he did it - it made a big difference in both his appearance and his confidence.

OK I guess it wasn't the workout that did it. Been harfing all night and most of the day. But it appears that the show is mostly over.

The last square meal that I got to keep was on Tuesday. Its going to be water only for awhile longer though. My guts are Not Amused with me right now.

wow, I was really dumb to move to Washington where I have to commute to everything including both jobs.

I assumed the weather would be a factor but didn't realize how much construction would impact my options. The Dalles Bridge is closed for a long time to come (next year) Thursday nights through Monday mornings, Hood River Bridge just started "load testing" 7 days a week and now the freeway is having "rolling slowdowns" Tuesdays and Thursdays where we should "expect long delays".

you know what my biggest worry is? stuck in traffic and having to pee.

It's critters-to-the-vet day. Not normally something to rant about, but my cat Ziva will not cooperate. We have to make sure to keep her out of our bedroom because during the day she sleeps under the bed and there's no way I can reach her under there (vacuum cleaner would have to be deployed.) Her second-favorite place to chill is behind the couch - well, I need to move the couch to vacuum anyway...

She absolutely hates to be picked up - claws come out almost immediately. So I'll have to get her by the scruff of the neck, which I hate to do, but it's the only way. Her crate is open and ready for me to drop her in. The appointment is at 1 and we need to leave around 12:30. So sometime between 11:30 and noon, the hunt begins.

On top of that, she's a long-haired cat and she refuses to let me brush her. There are massive matted areas on both her her hips and on her back. The vet wants $160 to shave her - nope. Ain't gonna happen. I don't need any fancy cut - just no more mats. I did get a number from the dog's groomer for someone who may be able to de-mat her. Here's hoping it's not stupid expensive.

Idiot cat - if she'd just let me brush her like I used to, this wouldn't be a problem.

How old is she? If she used to let you brush her but doesn't anymore, it's possible there's pain involved. If she's an older kitty, it's probably arthritis.

as for me... today in the mail, there was a $20 coupon for Oriental Trading Co (where I get my rubber ducks)... addressed to Snookie.

I'll link you to the one I bought, but I'll also link you to where you can choose one for yourself, as there are different styles.

The one I bought:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B093F...b_b_asin_title

If you search for "grabbing tool," it brings you to this page.

She's 13 (we think - the rescue gave their best guess when I got her) but I don't think it's pain. She'll come to me to get skritches and she's never flinched from being touched anywhere. I'm inclined to think it's old age attitude.

The vet did shave off the worst of the mats, and we've ordered a quiet shaver, hoping we can DIY groom her. At the moment, she looks weird, but since she continues to stay under the bed or behind the couch, we almost never see her anyway.

Related rant - the vet bill was over $300!!! And that was with the multi-pet discount. They've raised their prices. A lot. I'm going to look around for a low-cost clinic, if such a thing exists around here.

I've never been able to find a low cost vet clinic. I try to tell myself that they have a right to a living wage too, but then our latest office has added a pet salon and has a zoning request in for a boarding kennel.
I'm all for getting my pets the health care they need, but the last place kept pushing hard upsells on extra stuff (e.g. a $400 "elderly cat blood workup" for Oliver simply because he was 9yrs old, not because he had any problems but because he was old and could). Then they built a HUGE two-story addition.

SIL called last night to talk to Swimmy and ask what she wants for her birthday. I'm bracing myself for unpleasantness in holding the line that SIL and Nephew are not invited to any gathering at my house. They are unvaccinated and I don't want them here. Could they wear a mask? Sure. But then Nephew could have worn a mask at the funeral home but didn't. Just because. And SIL just had COVID this month. The rational side of me says that she probably is immune right now because of that. The less rational side of me is still mad at both of them for putting the entire family at risk. I feel justified and petty in turns.

That's relative since my arm strength is fine, and it doesn't take me any effort to lift things. I don't use mine to grab things from a shelf, just to pick up things from the floor, like socks or candy wrappers that miss the wastebasket. I just use it to extend my reach so I don't fall over.

The CDC recommends that you still get vaccinated even if you have had Covid-19, so I would still hold the line that SIL and hubby aren't welcome in your home unless and until they're fully vaccinated. It's your home and your family's health that are being put at risk, so you're justified in excluding them if they won't get vaccinated. And being angry at them is your rational side speaking up.

I love October, but I'm going to throw something at the TV if that Ghost Watcher with Fancy Equipment promo doesn't go off Discovery soon.

It's not an angel. It's a fucking cloud formation, Clem.

Know what will make it lay down? A big ol' swing of the bat. Hair, hickoid. It rhymes with lair and care not car. Redneck.

Is it Bagans? I can't stand that guy. He's invaded the Halloween Baking Championship on Food Network. ::shakes fist::

I can't stand any of them.

When we lived in Jacksonville FL, the Humane Society had a low-cost clinic and they were really great - not just saving money, but they were good with our critters. I think that's the only thing I miss about Florida.

Reminds me of a car dealer commercial on a Pittsburgh TV station (KDKA maybe?) back when I was in college. A couple of rednecks are milking cows as they talk about the car dealership. It ends with: "Take me with you, Clem! I want to be a weiner*!", then Clem throws a milk bucket at the other guy.

*supposed to be 'winner', but that's how he pronounced it. the big joke when i was in school was that line. we generally used it for whenever anyone suggested going to the dining hall.

It's now close enough to our flight to Seattle for me to look up our arrival gate at Seatac Airport.

Yep, we're disembarking at the north terminal. That's one of those separate "floating" terminals which are detached from the main terminal. That means crowding onto an underground tram which ferries travelers to and from the floating terminal. Do not like. I think I'll double-mask.

Also, the weather forecast says it'll be raining in Seattle the day we fly. Not unexpected in Washington, eh? Still, I'm a nervous flier and turbulence and me do not agree. The next time I fly I think I'll ask my doctor if there's anything he can give me that will make me not clutch the armrests and whimper for the duration of the flight.

On the brighter side, taking the train from the north satellite probably means less walking than if you were at most of the gates in the main terminal. They're pretty quick, too, so you won't be on one for long.

Also, rain doesn't usually mean turbulence here, and I don't see any wind in the forecast. I bet it will be fine.

as I was driving home today past a cliff, a rock fell off of it, smashed the passenger's side window completely and tried to kill me. since I wasn't even hurt, maybe I should be posting in the raves thread about how I'm just fine but I'm too shook.

the rock bent the car frame a bit besides spraying glass everywhere. in my purse. in my pants.

I'm having trouble winding down. decided to have it towed across the bridge in the morning and the auto repair place will have a rental car for me to take to work. my insurance covers 80% per day of this, up to $1000. which doesn't sound like much, does it?

it's a state highway with signs that say "rocks" but I'm not sure what good they do. I mean, I've always seen those signs and don't know what I could have done differently. it's not like I saw it coming.

Yeah, the signs are there just to remind you to look out for rocks that have landed on the road. Even adding the word falling to the sign does jack to alert you to rocks in motion, if it happens enough in one area they sometimes get serious and actually build a deck over the effected lanes. Glad you weren’t injured.
