Poll: blackboard or whiteboard?

can't tell if it's just nostalgia but I have a strong preference for a blackboard over a whiteboard.

despite the dust, I much prefer chalk because you can tell exactly how much you have and it will never dry up and you and leave you with no way to write down whatever it is you need or want to write down.

and the sound of writing on a chalkboard is nice. and the feel of chalk in my hand....

and so on.

Blackboard. I prefer the dark background to a whiteboard with rainbow colored writing all over it.

The best software design tool I ever used was a big printing white board on wheels. You'd roll it into the conference room and the team would start drawing how the software was going work. And you'd argue and erase stuff and eventually you had that chunk of the design hammered out. Then you'd hit the print button and it would print what was on the board. The scrum master would hang onto the printouts and you could refer to them to see how the token for the credit card was returned and how it was given to the payment processor when it was billing time.

You don't scare me. Do your worst.

Actually, I never really minded the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

I chose 'other', because I subscribe to a few 'explainer' Youtubers who do interesting stuff with greenscreen or whatever video effect they use to draw stuff around, and sometimes overtop of, themselves for illustrating what they're explaining. In my RL life, I don't have any actual use for either, and haven't since I got out of school. No job I've ever had used either.

I chose 'both'. I need to include the whiteboard in there because I write much more clearly on a whiteboard, so if I'm putting up material or :shudder: presenting, I'd much rather have a whiteboard.

But just in terms of overall nostalgia and je ne sais quoi I have a lot more affection for blackboards. The best was when your teacher picked you to be the one to erase the blackboard and then wipe it down with a damp sponge. I would always accidentally-on-purpose miss erasing part of what was there so I could obliterate it directly with the sponge because that was my kink. Also I made sure I had a really wet sponge because not only was it more effective than a merely damp one, it also made for an interesting experiment for watching which parts of the board would dry the quickest.

I should have just started a thread entitled "I like blackboards, do you want to talk about that?" but folks like voting.

I've heard.

I voted blackboards because that's what they used when I was in school, and it was good enough for me! You can have my chalk when you pry it out of my cold dead hand!

The place I used to get my weed from had a blackboard that they put the specials on. It wasn’t just writing but art as well. I mean the person who did the art work was really good. Art on a blackboard is really great.

These days, a whiteboard causes me much less grief. No fear of that wrong scratch on a blackboard that will send me into sheer pain, and probably also an anxiety attack! It hurts everyone to hear nails on a chalkboard, but to a person with autism? Hoo boy. It can ruin your entire day. Also, this probably still applies to chalkboards, but I always got excited to go up to the whiteboard in class, only because I loved the sound of writing on them. Something about that thunk... Honestly, it's probably another autism thing.

That being SAID.. Chalkboards are also fun, because they're also less common for the folks in my age group. The multicolored chalk on a black/green board does satisfy, much more than a whiteboard. I'd say the best argument for chalkboards can be summarized with this video.

aesthetically there is no contest. I LOVE the sound of even bad chalk. and now, thanks to youtube, I know there is even better chalk and math nerds really get into it and youtube knows one more thing about me that will make it easier for them to suck me in.

Soak the eraser in a cup of water. it's almost entirely unlike tea.

now That might change my mind.

But let's be clear. I'm an old fart. The original black blackboards - not those faux green ones - with the extra-special long foam eraser. Yes, they make my hands too dry and yes, at some point I get chalk dust on my clothes, which will spread as I fail at wiping it off. But, it doesn't smell. I don't like the smell of dry-erase markers.

ya, aesthetically blackboards need to win as any disadvantages of chalk such as dust is cancelled out by the feel of using it

I did meet a smart whiteboard on somebody's fridge and it was pretty cool, just not what I had in mind.

I meant to put on the wall and write lists. maybe lots of them.

Even if WB's - in theory - are better and more versatile, in practise they have one large disadvantage: the damned pens/markers.

How many times have you started writing something only to find out that the marker is dry after half a sentence? So the hunt in the drawer with markers begin. And I have yet to find a marker that keeps writing well for an extended period (i.e. an hour long class). We've tried markers that can be refilled, different brands but they ALL SUCK.

I don't know why. Sharpies work fine, other, even cheap markers do what they should. But for some reason white board markers are horrible.

So, aside from style and nostalgia, chalk and board is so low tech it will always work.

The ink in whiteboard markers is alcohol based. This makes it dry quickly on the whiteboard, but also in the marker itself. It is also what you would use to erase permanent markers (Sharpie, etc), so you can't even use Sharpies to make permanent lines or such on the whiteboard since the other marker will erase it.

I think it's about 80 proof.

ETA: I checked -
Quote:
Dry-erase markers have been around, in various forms, since the 1960s. By making small changes in the composition of a permanent marker, manufacturers created an ink that would not be absorbed by a dry-erase board. Dry-erase markers are permanent, however, if used on any surface that absorbs liquids, such as paper or cloth. Three main chemicals are found in dry erase markers: SD alcohol-40, isopropanol and resin.
