The problem with external knee pads in the dirt is rocks. One little pebble in there really stings. I think the inside ones are the hot ticket. I wonder if laying on some iron-on patches in advance would be worth the trouble?

If anyone has other ideas, I'm listening.
That's because wimmen are supposed to go outside in little flowered cotton "gardening gloves", plant a few pansies and petunias and then lay down for a while. Same thing with garden tools--those "made for women" are either pink and useless or just useless. Why can't I have something made of forged steel that actually fits the smaller dimensions of my hand? And shovels etc should be proportionate to our heights as well.

They'd make money if they did this. The fact that they don't I ascribe to blatant sexism on the part of tool makers everywhere.

Yeah, we don't want to sterilize everyone that walks up to the front door.

Another vote for the hard shell knee pads, They really do protect you better. I assume the garlic being planted now is for harvest next spring?

Sigh...the girl developed a nifty head cold yesterday (which of course led to barfing, because that's what she does). She's doing some school work now, under duress. I had to tell her that if she hadn't gotten behind last week when she went into work with hubby, and hadn't gotten behind in Biology online (she's been working steadily, but waaaay too slowly), she could rest more today. Ah, the joys of a teenager, even a lovely one like mine, are many.

In the meantime, I'm about to make myself an exercise calendar. I haven't stopped running, but I should be doing much more of it. My brain keeps telling me it takes too much time, but I've got to take care of me and do more than just run. If I have a schedule, it's much more likely to get done, especially if I print it out and post it up. Then it will be a chart, and charts are important and official and must be followed, darn it.

Harbor Freight can bite my ass. I needed a wire stripper and some red wire butts but they only have the ten buck "assorted" mess with about a hundred things I don't need along with only 75% of what I do need. And heat shrink stupidy ones I don't want, I just need regular old inline crimp butts, thanks. So I went to O'Reilly's instead, where they had exactly what I needed for much less AND they reset the error code from the misfired cylinder. Pbblth, Harbor Freight!

And I have successfully changed out the deck, go me! I even got the cigarette lighter assembly back and the ashtray too--both are a smidgen tricky. I have set the face to deep green to match Agnes' paint job and the sound is boomin' way better than with that cheap mechless fucker. Can't beat Sony for giving you a feature rich environment to play in. I'd be happy if it was just the "can remember I said shuffle, dammit" feature but the equalizer presets, loudness, auto balance that can be set to favor the driver (or just the front in general, I was nice and set it that way) and the display that can show the clock all the time and the color options are pretty damned nice too. Now both vehicles have equally good decks in them and identical 32GB flash drives too--that even have some room on them if I get new stuff.

Oh fudge, I've gone and stepped in it.

Good news: I'm not singing in church on the 25th.
Bad news: I'm playing. Organ and piano.

Commence fretting.

Solfy needs two Solfys to take care of all her Solfyness.

I had a successful Thursday, there was a visit from the home health care nurse and I got out for a spot of shopping for myself and got a haircut. Helped the old man struggle through lunch and pills the rest of the afternoon. We watched some TV together, got him a shower and into bed early.

I got the hardwood portions of the two thresholds done tonight. What a pain in the neck. Will have to reinstall the marble bits, but that's okay.

Our regular organist is incredible. Now everyone will know how much I suck.
I made him agree to give me a "how to use this particular organ" lesson next week. ( no comments from the peanut gallery)

Boo for head colds, boo for Harbor Freight, yay for successfully changing out the deck, boo for fretting, and yay for a successful Thursday.

I had a good Thursday myself. I went to visit a friend tonight, and after enjoying her homemade cream of mushroom soup, and scallops-and-orange salad (but oh, it was so much more than that; she and her husband own a restaurant, and boy, they can cook) we went to listen to an author's reading at the local library. Er, that is, "local" to my friend. It was all so nice! And I loved the drive home in the dark. It wasn't the first time that I've travelled that stretch of highway at night, but it was the first time that I've driven it at night by myself (Mr. Duck doesn't "do" authors' readings) and it put me into a great groove where it was just me and the stars and the dark winding road. I've missed that!

I love driving at night by myself. Yay for you Peeking!

Great tip Smartie, I think I could wear them under my pants to save on the pebbly problem Jag.

Wolf, Garlic planted now will be harvest next July/August.

Came home last night to scaffolding all up my chimney, and yet (strangely), my porch stairs are still intact.

I took a picture. I really want to share it with that "handyman" who gave me the estimate/job from bizarro-world.

Off to Oak Brook to be heartily bored for the next 8 hours. There is no way to make CME-coordination exciting.

Everything's an hour early this morning, the old man stayed awake at 7 instead of going back to bed until 8:30. I have large ambitions for the morning, mopping floors including moving furniture, and yardwork. I think I'll have my inside cleaning fit first.

Last edited by Khampelf; 9th October 2015 at 07:23 AM. Reason: oxford comma, yardwork is separate from mopping.

I bought some Franken Berry cereal yesterday and had some for breakfast today. It is actually better than I remember. Granted it is very close to Calvin's Strawberry Frosted Sugar Bombs, but still tasty. But I did have a cheese stick with it to temper the glycemic index.

Wolf, hubby and the girl have had both Count Chocula and Franken Berry this season. I would like the Franken Berry if not for the marshmallows, which I don't like in my cereal.

The girl is pretty much over her cold, so she has a friend staying the night. It's the third time this friend has been here overnight--she's sweet and somewhat quiet, so she's one I don't mind having her over. In the meantime, I'm pre-planning some history lessons while the girl is working on virtual school. Whee.

I realized my grand aspirations and got the floors swept and mopped and the yardwork done before noon, today. I ordered a celebratory pizza, then collapsed into a deep nap from 1-3. Which means Friday evening started at 4:20. There's nothing worth watching on TV, I may well get to some reading I have held back for a special occasion.

Son and I had tentatively decided to go take care of some banking bidness this morning, I went over and was pleased to discover a teacher inservice day had the grandkids at home so I got to visit and play a while. Princess just got her braces on yesterday and is in a bit of pain but is otherwise handling it pretty well. TO has been soaking up new facts like the little sponge he is--he has memorized the ASL hand spelling signs and the accompanying illustrative sign like apple for A and zebra for Z, etc. My kyootniz meter pegged out on that one.

What with one thing and another, son ended up having to go run out by the airport to meet with someone so the errand was delayed and I got kidnapped by Agnes. Tried again to make the run out historic 30 and it was some better, but even on a Friday there are just too many tards who get in the way of testing out new plugs and such. So I hopped onto I-84 for a bit just to crank it out to 80mph to Hood River, was going to take 35 over to Government Camp because it's a well travelled highway but after stopping for a growler of cider and some jam and apples at a roadside fruit stand I decided that it was really time to take her out on some "drive it like you stole it" road. Because after buying a new car and dealing with the bobbles and fixits eventually there comes a point where you have to decide if you trust the car or not, and Lolo Pass Road is a great test. Half of it's basically a one lane paved logging road wth turnouts but it has much longer sightlines than you'd expect because the road is also service access for high tension lines crossing the pass. So it's logged off completely in large sections so you can see way ahead to make sure nobody's about to become a hood ornament. It's not terribly well travelled, though, I only met five cars going the other way in 25 miles. One of them was a sudden stop situation as we were getting ready to pass each other a couple deer suddenly darted out across the road and we just missed them. Idiots. Part of the road is dirt and all washboardy from heavy equipment going through to a bridge fix work site about halfway through--they put up a stop light. On a dirt road, middle of a forest. Hilarious.

Anyway, it was an awesome drive, Agnes handled it all like a champ and we're feeling quite simpatico. New stereo was perfect, lots of great music and in spite of my best effort she did not get sideways. AWD is pretty cool, this is my first AWD car and I think I like it.

I love my AWD, Smartie. I'm glad you had such a nice drive!

Today is the last Farmers' Market for the year, and it's cold and windy this morning. I guess I'll wear my big winter coat -- and hat, scarf and gloves -- and will reminisce about the times it was so hot there I thought I would melt. After the market, I'll go for a little road trip to take some pictures.

It's Thanksgiving weekend, and yesterday our neighbours invited us to celebrate with them this Monday. Because one of them has been sick, they were a little late with their invitation, and we had already bought a turkey. So, we'll donate it to them, and I won't have to cook! (I will bring a dessert, though.) Bonus!

I'm mopping up bits of housework I might be tempted to do on Sunday. There's laundry in and most everything and more was done yesterday. I'm waiting until after 2nd breakfast to go to the pharmacy. I hope they've finally gotten the refill authorization for the old man's valium. He needs it.

Welp, made it back from Arkansas late last night. There were some good parts, or at least information I found useful. Most of it wasn't good. The rooms were gross and smelly; the dining facility food was horrible and overpriced, and some of the aspects of the training were pretty bad. The classrooms were set to freezing and temps outside were in the 80s. But, at least it wasn't freezing or raining outside.

I did go out one night to the actual city of LIttle Rock, and ate at the Cajun Wharf restaurant. It was located right on the Arkansas River and the food was pretty good. So was the drink I ordered. I had a good time there.

The majority of the people I met were very nice; both the staff at the installation and the students and instructors at the course. I already knew many of them through years of phone conversations, emails and previous training events. I met some new people too and that's always a good thing.

I am glad to be home though and my dogs are sticking to me like glue.

I just got done cleaning up the kitchen. My and husband and son were totally "batching" it. At least most of the dishes were in the sink.

It's rainy and windy here and I think I'll just spend the day relaxing before I tackle any other chores. I am tired. I didn't sleep for shit at training. Yesterday, I got up at 2:30 our time (4:30 in AR) and didn't get home until 10:30 here. I was up for another couple of hours and finally fell asleep. I had basically been up for 24 hours at that point. I slept for about five hours and it felt good.

Thank goodness I at least have a three day weekend before I return to the insanity of the office.

Paging Solfy

So something weird happened. Last fall I bought a quart of odorless mineral spirits, opened it and used a little of it to clean up some paint spills and then capped it and put it in the paint cabinet. Yesterday I took it out to clean a brush and found it was full of gloppy white stuff. High viscosity and it frankly looked like a quart of elephant cum. Any idea what happened to it? The lid was on pretty tight. It was temp cycled as it is in an unheated space, but I've never had anything like this happen to solvents before.

Happy Canuckian Turkey Day, y'alls!

Got the banking stuff done, yay, and while we were at it we got son set up with a share account and checking account so he can start decoupling from BofA--a mortgage person will be touching bases with him to see if a refi to the CU would be beneficial as well. I'm thinking a refi and a HELOC since he has a goodly chunk of equity in there and it would be less costly overall to have the HELOC at 5% than a credit card at a minimum of 8.99%--he does need a line of credit of some sort since he's growing a business but the least costly option would be optimal. While we were at it we also converted my account over to an interest bearing checking because I do enough transactions to qualify for the interest and 1.5% on average daily balance for up to 10K in the account is nothing to sneeze at. If I don't qualify for whatever reason it costs me nothing, I just don't get the dividend. That was a good move for me--and I set son up as my beneficiary should I croak unexpectedly. That's just a good housekeeping move, makes things simple.

Kids are heading out to the coast for the night just as a quick getaway--discovered at the last minute that the place they rented is no pets allowed so I have the hairy granddaughter for the night. It's raining today but tomorrow is supposed to be nice so I'm thinking of packing all three up and heading out to the Sandy for a last hurrah swimming day.

Have I mentioned how much I like my DeWalt demolition saw? It cut the old railing out in a few seconds and sliced the remains into convenient sized chunks in no time!

But like all projects, it will grow again as I noticed that one of the porch boards is rotted beyond usability. I think I have some milled T&G that fits that I can replace it with, but getting T&G out takes some finesse to now really chew things up.

Now I'm going to kick back, listen to some psy-chill and hydrate.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

And welcome back taters!

I'm continuing in my quest to find the perfect blood glucose level. I test, and eat, and wait, and test again. It kinda sucks. I'm hoping my numbers will start to go down. Well, they already have somewhat. Although I found out last night I can't eat spaghetti and meatballs without jacking up my numbers.

Wolf, standard mineral spirits shouldn't be able to do that. They may get a bit cloudy if they pick up moisture, but gloppy is bizarre. I don't know what they do to the odorless versions to make them odorless, but it sounds like yours are polymerized somewhat.

Smarty, nope I used a small amount of regular spaghetti. I think I'll try whole grain spaghetti next, as I HATE spaghetti squash. There's something about the texture I just can't stand.

I hear ya--you either dig it or ya don't, not much middle ground there. How about doing lightly fried slices of polenta with the sauce over? Glycemic index on polenta is way lower than pasta and it's so filling.

Found out what the problem was. The stuff was some misleadingly labeled "odorless mineral spirits substitute". It's supposed to be white and gloppy. The reviews on Amazon are very bad. Won't be buying that stuff again.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Peeking and the rest!

I hopped over (2 1/2 hours one way) to the Barter (hippy) Faire today to look for seed garlic of two varieties. Only found one but it was fun day.

Saw lots of peeps I love, lots of weird/interesting peeps and bought some cool stuff in the meantime. Purchased a 1 lb. jar of honey for $50. Price was $6, but he's a good guy I've bought from before. He talked to me last year for about an hour about beekeeping and gave me tons of info. He and his family got burned out in the fires. Had only 4 hives left out of 100 and lost his house and all out-buildings. Only his chickens survived. They hid on the down-wind side of the above ground pool. I handed him a fifty for the honey and decided I did not need the change.

Also got some cool scarves, lots of edibles and a carbless pipe for the SO. He bought one last year but complained its too short. He has a massive head cold and stayed home but was most pleased that I brought him a present.

I took two "kids" (they're 20) from town with me. They had never been and now think I'm the coolest gray haired old lady EVAH.

Yeah, I've been burned (not literally) by that stuff before. It wasn't gloppy, but it was milky and did a shitty job cleaning paint brushes. General opinion is that they add some hydroxyl or other polar groups to aliphatics to make a water emulsion. Problem is those groups make them more reactive than standard aliphatics. Plus a water emulsion isn't going to be as good at dissolving/diluting organics.

Off to the grocery store to get supplies for today's working crew. The original reason for the visit is that Mom and Dad are bringing Swimmy's birthday present a bit early so she has nice weather to enjoy it. Her birthday's not for a couple weeks, and it's an outdoor present. The present delivery morphed into dinner, which expanded into Brother coming over to get suitcases from Mom (our house is the midpoint between Bro and Mom), which turned into "while you're here can you please help us move heavy shit?"

I had a successful night off, the bartender had my drink waiting for me, just cause I've been a regular and a good tipper for a few months now. The comic shop had three new issues of the titles I follow, but Dutch Bros was too crowded. It would have made me late to the movie with the drive through stacked up as it was. I saw The Martian and was home before the caregiver left. I make the most of my six hours. The old man was in a mood to stay up, but I collapsed around one, the Noir movies I'd seen before except the last one, which I couldn't stay up for. Slept all the way until the alarm, took care of the cats and stepped into Sacred Sunday Sloth. We had a med error scare. The old man didn't take his night meds last night. He sat down at the kitchen table and started taking the night meds before I brought him the morning meds. We caught it in time, sorta. He took an extra tranquilizer. He's rather placid this morning, which suits me. I'm sorta watching a movie in the background while I post it up here.

Neon Breakfast

this morning I had steak & eggs at the casino, a place I haven't been in months. the breakfast is $3.99 so you can't beat that but for awhile there I was afraid I couldn't go in and eat without gambling.

but I did today, so yay me.

Had a most excellent breakfast buffet this morning. I wanted to be at Tractor Supply when they opened this morning. So I drove out last night. (30mi. away) And just next door was a Country Buffet that opened early on Sunday morning. They have an outdoor seating area so Chuck joined me. And the waitress kept bringing him bacon. Then I went and got the Winter heating system for my van.

More work on the railing. So far the most annoying part of this has been the price of paint. I've had to buy primer, the trim white and the porch paint and am so far almost $90 in on that. (We use the good stuff.) This is more than I've spent on the rest of the project in total.

The problem is that it's been a while since we did anything with the exterior wood work and the paint was either all gone or unusable.

I also managed to spill some dead shellac on the driveway, but got in mostly cleaned up and can scrub the rest off later.

Doctor Who Sunday has gone well. I went around after church doing the theme song until we watched it, but it was a quite excellent end to the two-parter, which means I squealed and applauded and hid under the blanket (not necessarily in that order).

Now is the time to go run, which I've been putting off since Saturday morning. I have to check off the little box, though, so here I go.

Will Chuck be cool with living in the van?
