What the fuck is wrong with this place?

Serious and interesting questions are ignored while obvious trolls are responded to frequently. Hell, even the modes only check in about once a week.

I agree that the troll-poking can be annoying (and lord knows I've done it myself so I shouldn't complain) but what serious and interesting threads are being ignored?

I'm not going to bother and create a list, but isn't painfully obvious the direction this board has taken in the last year?

Not really. I was gone from here for most of last year and when I came back it didn't seem much different than before.

Well for one, posting has to be down 75% and half of that is trolls or someone from the box.

Yeah, I'm recently returned myself so I'm not sure what's unusual and what's expected.

What are you gonna do? We've had all the grand debates as many times as we can stand. Drawn the battle lines, settled all the problems of the world. These days it seems to be more celebrations, snark, and sympathy about daily life. More of a tavern than a debate club. Which obviously works for me, considering that I'm the biggest blabbermouth around.

Well it just ain't what is was a few years ago. When I see PSXer with the top posts, I know I'm in the wrong place.

I hear you. I've been around a lot the last week after not being round much for quite a while. The Dope snark doesn't interest me much anymore (too out of touch)& I've never been a fan of the super long threads.

Still enjoying Arts & Entertainment threads & Baker's Death pool game.(I've even got a preliminary draft for next year! )

Just the way it is.

It's been sliding for years. The user base is too small for much discussion, and there's not a damned thing to be done for it. All the shiny has worn off and people have wandered away. It's like a party when most of the guests have gone home and all that's left are the core group of people who are too drunk to leave yet.

I lurk at Reddit for discussions/debates with larger audiences.

I like the board just fine, I don't even see box posts unless I go looking for them, and I sock up for forays into the box. I stick to the super long threads and babble off the top of my head. It's words to read and this place is, as Rigs has noted, cheaper than therapy.
I like the tavern analogy, there's even a room for the stoners. I do my best to stay serious in serious threads. I haven't seen any interesting questions go ignored, and poking trolls is fun in a guerrilla psychology sort of way. I poke them with pillows.

Maybe need another couple of mods - the sort that are good at "let's get this party started" type threads. I know there is a big list of mods, but most seem connected to MafiaCentral.

Place always seems livelier when Fenris & Giraffe are posting.

It would probably be possible to hire someone for a dollar a day, from some developing nation, and then get them to make several hundred posts to the site daily, in order to keep things looking busy.

If everyone on this board was willing to contribute ten cents a day we could make this happen.

I'd be happier if this place was more active, but I'm not sure how to make that happen. Clamping down on the more trollish posts won't increase the number of quality posts, it just takes away a banal amusement some people enjoy.

In any event, I don't think there's much use in hand-wringing about the state of affairs. People still show up and post. If there's ways to change things to make it more fun for those people to show up and post, I'm all ears. If people stop showing up and posting, I'll go back to my original plan and use this site to sell used wigs. I have a lot of used wigs for some reason.

For this amount of traffic, the forum segmentation is a bit overdone. There should be at most 1 forum (plus the box, if you must).

I disagree, but it's easy enough to disregard forum segmentation entirely if that's how you want to see it. New Posts, with all subforums included.

I believe Giraffe only has three legs, having lost one in a freak accident while being chased by a dinosaur across a cattle grid.

When Reddit was starting up, the owners actually did use socks and create a lot of content, to make it seem busy. The amusing part is I read about this on Reddit.
Quote:
Here’s an interesting revelation from Reddit cofounder Steve Huffman: The social news site was built on a lie. Many hundreds of lies, to be more specific, in the form of fake user accounts that Huffman and fellow cofounder Alexis Ohanian used to populate the site in its earliest days.

“You would go to Reddit in the early days, the first couple of months and there’d be tons of … fake users,” Huffman says in a video for online educator Udacity.

Through those fake accounts, Huffman and Ohanian submitted high-quality content—the type of articles they wanted read. This “set the tone” for the site as whole, Huffman said and, at the same time, made it look populated.

In the early days, reddit's community was built up thanks to hundreds of fake profiles created by the site's co-founders, according to Steve Huffman (coincidentally, a reddit co-founder). To make the site look populated and diverse, Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, the other founder, would submit links of their own choosing, each time under a new username.
Quote:
The team submitted a ridiculous amount of content under fake user accounts to give the appearance of popularity. Yes, you read that right. Reddit — a site that values a fair and open democratic process to determine worthy content and police itself — sleeps soundly on a bed of lies.
How ironic

Pretty much this.

I don't come around much because that little shit and its presumed socks have successfully sucked all the energy out of real interaction. I just tune in once in awhile, sigh and leave. I'm not a particularly riveting contributor though, so it's not like I offer much quality either.

Yeah, but he's either got socks or someone is trying the same shtick. So when you think there's a legit thread going on, you find out it's actually all PSXered up.

I started to participate again recently, but figured out mid-thread that it was similar bullshit and now I'm spending more time elsewhere (but aw-hell-no not the Durp.)

As Solfy said, the user base is pretty small for in-depth discussion. Letting a dumbass like PSXer have the run of the place for far too long entertained an even smaller few while kinda making the board suck for a lot of people who used to post a lot more.

I barely post the way I used to. Not because there wasn't a lack of worthwhile to talk about, but because the board spent a lot of time being dominated by shit like "Do girls like getting pooped on?" or whatever idiocy popped up next.

Yeah, I remember that, and much of what you say is true. But they let me run loose, too. I know SMG is back, but he's behaving himself.

In my happy ass obliviousness, I've detected no PSXer Clones. Socks are welcome as long as they behave as I understand it.

Not sufficient. I can see everything that way, but somebody might miss my posts. Then we don't have interaction and without interaction we might as well just cut off our thumbs and read YouTube comments all day.
